Virtual touristing in Hawaii - Explore Kilauea Volcano iOS app is free today 6/1/2012
For those of you who have been enjoying holoholo's pictures in the http://forums.tombihn.com/customer-p...n-volcano.html thread, if you have an iOS device such as an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, the Explore Kilauea Volcano app by Fire Work Media is free today. This app shows you panoramic views around the terrain of the Kilauea Iki Trail in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's also meant as a companion app that can be used as you walk along the Kilauea Iki Trail, where you can view details about plants along the route, which are described with an audio clip pronouncing the name.
From the main menu, tap on "Explore", then tap "1. Kilauea Iki Trail" to start your virtual tour. The other numbered map points will display photos of other locations in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which will apparently be sold through in-app purchase. When the "volcano" icon in the lower right is shown "erupting", dotted lines will circle parts of the screen where you can tap for further information — for example, to find out about plants along the trail. Tapping either on the circled hiker figure in the first screen, or on the right arrow key for the auto-played tour will start by showing you a movie of a Kilauea eruption. I've hiked this trail a few times, so I prefer to interactively browse parts of the trail, which you can do by panning around and also tapping in the direction of the blue arrows à la Google Streetview.
There's also another app from Fire Work Media called Explore Kilauea Volcano: Plants that specifically focuses on the plants. This has gone free several times in the past, but is not currently free ($0.99). I think they've been using it as a testbed for integrating parts into the Explore Kilauea Volcano app.
Hope this is of some interest, and not too specialist!

Explore Kilauea Volcano iOS app is free again 6/23/2012
Just wanted to mention that the Explore Kilauea Volcano iOS app has gone free again for an unknown time. I was surprised that Darcy tweeted it last time that I posted, but since she picked up my post late in the day, it only stayed free for a few hours after her tweet. This is a pretty cool app.

The Explore Kilauea Volcano iOS app just went free again a few hours ago for an unknown time. It typically doesn't stay free for more than a day or two. This is a pretty cool app, and since the time of the original posting they've added simulated tours of the Nāhuku Lava Tubes and the Devastation Trail, so you can make a simulated exploration of the geology and plants of those trails, in addition to the Kilauea Iki Trail. There are also the sounds of Hawaiian birds in those regions as you explore. The usual list price is now up to $4.99. What's also cool is that they ultimately plan to have a total of 14 trails of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in this app, and have been adding them one by one over time. They have separate apps for the individual trails, and ones about the geology and the plants of Volcanoes National Park, but they are all encompassed within this app. At present, the Explore Kilauea Volcano: Plants app is also free. These apps are highly recommended if you have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, and are interested in visiting Hawaii and Volcanoes National Park, or if you have visited there and would like to remember the experience.
