FJN + LSB? PCSB? DLBP? A3PC?

I am considering replacing my EDC with an FJN. I primarily carry: bound journal, wallet, keys, transport pass, phone.

Dilemma: I appreciate my current EDC's ability to "grow" into a 40 litre backpack, particularly when I take an unplanned grocery shopping trip (my primary mode of transport is public trans and/or bicycle.)

I am noodling with potential compromises. Would a shopping bag or one of the various packing cube shoulder bag/backpack designs fold up small enough to be carried in the FJN without taking up a tremendous amount of room?

I also sized it with the Medium Cafe Bag:

Wich shows that the Large Cafe Bag would definatly work and leve more spare room.

I am not sure what you mean by the last apriviation. Let me know and I take pictures. Also if you want to see more conparisons.

I tried folding a Large SB neatly (there have been forum posts/videos that show a Small Shop Bag in a Q-Kit and a Large in a #1 or #2 Stuff Sack), but it was too thick and took up too much room in the FJN. I failed at getting a Small SB in a Q-Kit, but that would probably fit depending on the size of your journal and wallet.

I don't have a DLBP to try, but folding a PCBP (I have both kinds-A30 and A45) was also too messy/big. A PCSB folds up very small, but I can't see many groceries going in that.

Maybe others (with better folding skills) will chime in with a workable solution. Perhaps the new Side Kick (similar size, but not hard-sided like the structured FJN) would be more accommodating of rounded/bulgy items like a folded grocery tote? I love the FJN (I have two, acquired second hand during the period when it was no longer produced: one as a calendar/planner on the go and the other is "command central" at home for passwords, address book and contact info for home maintenance stuff).

ETA: I persevered and got a SSB in a Q-Kit using a 200d SSB and not a 400d SSB which is what I used initially. While the FJN zips with the Q-Kit in there, it's kind of bulgy and not ideal.

Many thanks, @ilkyway & @threeteez. It sounds and looks like if I want a bag 2 go while using the FJN as an EDC, that I will need to forego the sturdy and beautiful TB bags in favor of something more like this: Reuseit Workhorse Bag | Reusable Shopping Bags | ReUseIt | Reuseit , which should slip into an organizer pouch just fine and serve my needs for flexible extra storage as needed.

Duh I am a bit thick at times. You wanted the bigger bag to go inside the FJN. I think your conclusion is correct. See to Sumit makes highly packable solutions too.

Sorry for misinterpreting and therefor miss-picturing.

You could fold a Small or Large Shop Bag in a Q Kit and clip it to the FJN strap at the curved back of the Double Gate Keeper Clip https://www.tombihn.com/collections/...nt=16645156743

It can be clipped with either a Double Carabiner or a 1" Triangle Metal Hook. Those 2 are made by Tom Bihn and I find them more secure than any other old carabiner but you might have some which are suitable.

Hrmmmm. It looks like the SBs can fold sort of flattish, like so. Would a flattish folded SSB/LSB fit into the FJN pocket that sits underneath the pen slots? If at all possible, I would like the larger bag to somehow fit inside the FJN. Thank you everyone for playing this through with me!

@ilkyway Your photos were still ery informative! Thank you! It helped me better visualize both the FJN and the various TB floppy bags. Thank you! Also, thank you for the sea to summit tip off. Those are some seriously awesome stowable bags!

@backpack Thank you for the tip, I hadn't thought of that!

@threeteez It looks like the current fabric is 200d. So, the SB + Qkit should be a workable solution, as observed by @threeteez.
