View Full Version : Road Duffel

I was scouring the Tom Bihn website after looking up a ton of reviews on the different bags. I quite like the Aeronaut 30/45 in particular, and found that the "Skookum" Road Duffel is very close, with some difference in the side pocket and with straps for the dog mat (which seem useful for other things too!), same 1050d ballistic nylon, etc. and in-between size/volume.

I got curious though, it's much cheaper (160/180USD) than the Aeronaut (270/280USD).

What is different/missing in the Road Duffel that makes the difference? I'm probably completely missing it, but I can't find it.

Greetings Jimmy,
The big difference I see is the lack of backpack straps on the Road Duffle. elisa

I think the Road Duffle is also unlined whereas the Aeronauts are lined with Dyneema.

In the Road duffle, there are no backpack straps. It is not lined with Dyneema, and the walls that divide the main compartment from the end compartments are not able to be released for storage of longer items, like can be done in the Aeronauts. The hardware where the shoulder strap attaches is different as well. OH, and there are built in pockets on the Road duffle's inner walls that divide the main from the end compartments. And the tag is different. And the obvious difference of the mesh end pocket on one side of the Road duffle. Back in the blog somewhere are more pics of the inside of the Road Duffle--maybe a moderator can help find those?
(I don't have this bag, mind you...but I MAY really want it...;)

just looked through the pics in the product page for the LARGE road duffle--there are the blog pics I mentioned. check out that page, @jimmy. they help you see the inner bag a bit better. (wow, this is tough on the resolve to not buy this bag...)

Thanks ! This is great and exactly the infos I was looking for. Didn't expect such good replies :)
The pictures thread is awesome as well and very helpful.

This bag looks great and the price difference with the lining and straps makes complete sense now.

I think I'm going to go with the Aeronaut (I like the straps and ability to slide the laptop in there), albeit if not for that I'd have gone for the Road Duffel that looks also very good.
