Does anyone know what happened to these designs? I was thinking about getting a new messenger style bag but I can't find them on the site any more?

We retired both the Super Ego and the Ego to make way for new designs; here's a blog post all about it (https://blog.tombihn.com/classic-designs-retiring-to-make-way-for-new). And I was just talking with Tom the other day about the new briefcase/messenger bag designs he's working on: we expect they'll be ready to debut by this time next year.

In the meantime, though I'm sure you've already seen these, the current selection of messenger bags and cross-body-carry/briefcases is here (https://www.tombihn.com/collections/briefcases-and-messenger-bags); the Maker's Bag (https://www.tombihn.com/collections/briefcases-and-messenger-bags/products/the-makers-bag) (a messenger bag) could be an option if the size is right.

A sad for lovers of the Egos. The Ego has a few features seldom found on other bags - the ability to get into the main part of the bag without opening the flap and being able to easily get to things under the flap. Having the external bottle holders was a wonderful way of keeping my HydroFlask handy at all times.

With a packing cube in the main part, you can use it as your only bag for a short trip. I've used the Ego as my EDC for over a year now after spending a zillion years looking for the perfect bag - this one is close.

Unfortunately, the Egos were never fully appreciated. It took a while to grow on me but now it is my favorite bag.

Many thanks for the update - sorry to see the Ego go. I noticed that the blog post also said the Field Journal Notebook was being retired but I've seen it's still in production - I guess it was just too popular to let it go? Mine was one of the original pre-orders from 2010 and is still as good as new :-)

@KevinHall,

The last of the Egos sold out around mid-November 2015, just before the end-of-November debut where the Maker's Bag option that Darcy mentioned was introduced. The last ID messenger bags sold out a few weeks earlier. The last Super Ego hung around for a couple of months after the mid-March 2016 move to the new web hosting site. The main difference in current availability of messenger bags compared to the retired designs is in the ability to accommodate large laptops -- the ID Bag, Ego, Zephyr, and Super Ego all were well-suited to holding laptops in the 15" and larger sizes, with the Super Ego able to accommodate the very largest 17"+ laptops. Current messenger bag offerings reflect the trend to carrying smaller laptops and/or tablets, and the more restrictive carryon baggage limits imposed by airlines.

One factor behind the recent Return of the Field Journal Notebook (https://blog.tombihn.com/the-return-of-the-field-journal-notebook#post-header) was the introduction of new FJN organizational insert pockets, as well as the fact that the last production batch of Field Journals made before retirement were only available in the colors Burnt Orange, Red Blend, Olive, and Grey. A number of people who wanted to order the FJN before it disappeared stated that they really wanted other colors, such as were seen in the 2010 pre-orders. So the current FJN offerings featured an expanded color lineup. (The last few releases of the FJN feature Black Parapack instead of the Black 500d Cordura, and the new material is rather nice).

I'd encourage you to take a look at the new FJN organizational inserts (https://www.tombihn.com/products/field-journal-organizer-insert?variant=18039616007), which can be used in other bags (see, for example, the pictures in my review of The new Black (Dark Grid) Halcyon Daylight Briefcase (https://forums.tombihn.com/photos-videos-and-reviews/11226-new-black-dark-grid-halcyon-daylight-briefcase.html)), and work like mini-Freudian Slips. Since you may not have revisited the site for a while, I'll also point you to new range of Freudian Slips (https://www.tombihn.com/collections/accessories/products/freudian-slip?variant=16409089031) in different sizes. While new size Freudian Slips were introduced for the Synapse Backpacks (https://blog.tombihn.com/introducing-daylight-briefcase-synapse-freudian-slips), and in a variety of sizes for the Cafe Bags (https://blog.tombihn.com/cafebagorganization#post-header), they've been really useful in organizing a lot of other bags (including many of those retired messenger bags Darcy spoke of; see, for example, the pictures in @tpnl's A Brief case for the new Freudian Slips (https://forums.tombihn.com/photos-videos-and-reviews/10238-brief-case-new-freudian-slips.html) and @Ilkyway's The Cafe Bag sized Freudnian Slips in non Cafe Bags (https://forums.tombihn.com/photos-videos-and-reviews/10236-cafe-bag-sized-freudnian-slips-non-cafe-bags.html) threads.

ETA: One of the things I really appreciated was that in the final batches of the Ego, Super Ego, ID Bag, etc. that they made before the bags were retired, they managed to find Wasabi, Crimson, and Sapphire 500d Cordura for the bag linings, and offer a range of colors for the Ballistic Nylon of the outside of the bag.
