Every so often, we drive from our home in the Midwest out to California. While itís possible to cruise leisurely down Rte. 66 we choose to drive long days, stopping overnight only once or twice and taking advantage of those long lonely stretches of highway, flanked by sagebrush and governed by only the faintest suggestion of a speed limit.

When we do stop, all I want to do is check in at the hotel, get the dog cozy in our room (why yes, he does get his own bed), and then have a bit of dinner before returning to collapse. Because Iím always too tired and irritable to faff about with a lot of stuff that will only need to be re-packed in seven hours, I pack everything all three of us will need for our long drive.

Hereís a sample list of what I pack for two adults and a medium-sized dog for a three day, two night journey.

End pocket 1: sack of dog food, treats, Citizen Canine (with dog first aid in a Mini Organizer Pouch and a roll of poo bags), dog dishes in plastic bag.

End pocket 2: empty, with an Aeronaut 45 Travel Laundry Stuff Sack.

Main:
Ultraviolet Aeronaut 30 Small Aether Packing Cube: PJs for two.
Wasabi Aeronaut 30 Small Aether Packing Cube: swimsuits for two.
Packing Cube Shoulder Bag #1: shirt, jeans, socks, boxers.
Packing Cube Shoulder Bag #2: shirt, shorts, socks, boxers.
Carbon Aeronaut 30 Small Aether Packing Cube: shirt, jeans, underwear & socks
Aeronaut 45 End Pocket Packing Cube: shirt, shorts, underwear & socks
Spiff Kit: travel toiletries for two

Lid: Travel Tray, empty, to hold small items in the room

Obviously, itís better to use cubes that are sized specifically for the intended bag, but I was using what I had on hand.

If you buy Aether small and end packing cubes for your A45, get them in different colours! I got all carbon, and as they are very similar in size it takes me a minute to distinguish the different sizes before a start packing. School boy error.

That can be super annoying, I agree, and the Aether cubes are much more difficult to distinguish than the Halcyon ones for whatever reason.

A storage tip: keep small and large cubes in the main compartment and the end cube(s) in the end pocket. It definitely helps save a little bit of time when you're packing.

I actually coded the inside tag with a permanent marker: A30sm and A30end

My young daughter and I have been traveling together with an A45 for four years now. We each get a large packing cube for our clothes and that goes in the center pocket, with either the favorite childhood blanket or a jacket squeezed in as well. A laundry sack goes into the right pocket filled with underwear/socks/swimwear, and/or maybe an extra pair of shoes. The right side has an end packing cube filled with one 3DOC for each of us and misc. stuff depending on where we're headed (i.e. travel towels in an OP, snacks/food, small gifts for family, etc.). It's worked well for us so far, with the exception of one winter trip when her bulky snow pants and boots really needed to come. We also each usually pack a small personal bag with stuff to keep us busy while traveling.
