Although I'm still not sure about the price of this bag, I've been looking for a bag that allows me to carry my DSLR comfortably while traveling and I think this might be the perfect bag for this.

In the past, I've struggled with carrying a backpack plus my camera bag (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=971445&is=REG&fromDisList=y) (which carried my DSLR, small bits of camera gear, reading material, purse contents and water bottle). It's awkward to carry the bag as a messenger bag (across my front) and impossible to carry it on my shoulder with the backpack. And the straps really dig in.

I don't travel with a lot of camera equipment, but ideally would want a bag that would carry the DSLR + lens, misc. camera gear like batteries and cleaning equipment, wallet, water bottle, a book (or my mini ipad) (and maybe even a scarf).

I saw a post on the main thread about someone who used it for a camera bag, but without a description of what kind (or how much) gear. Does anyone have a sense for how well this would work with a DSLR, or better yet pictures? And how comfortable are the straps? I have a removable insert that fits my DSLR with a single long lens which I would want to use in the Top Bag.

Thanks!

I have a pro-sized body and with a 70-200 2,8 lense attached it fitts easily length wise in the main compartment, depending on your insert you will have room for more lenses and equipment. And the iPad (mini or regular) plus a book and a scarf will definatly also fit.

I have no light left but here is a sneak peek and I can add another one with more gear tomorrow:

Hope this helps for refferencing the size

Hmm, this is swaying me to like the top bag more. It's plenty of space for my camera gear in an Ape Case insert.
Different question, but i assume it's possible to attach the Smart Alec gatekeeper strap on the side of main bag to carry tripod?

The HsJ comes with its own set of lash straps (similar to the design of the Guide's Pack), so you could use that to attach a tripod. Do you have one of the Tripod Quivers? (They're now discontinued, but it may also be possible to rig one of those.)

There are the same attachmend points, they are used for the clip on side handle so yes. And there are two straps included but thouse are different.

I am too lazy to carry a trypot around wich is one of the reasons there will always be room for improvement with my pictures, but depending on your tripod you might be able to also fix it to the straps that are used to sinche the nag together if not fully stuffed.

@moriond, no I do not, but i think it is too small for my tripod.

@Ilkyway, good point on the compression strap, that might work as well, thanks. Btw, i hardly ever carry my tripod anymore, but this is a good reason I should because there is no need to carry it separately.
On the room for improvement point, i doubt tripod helps me much since i would not claim i am that good of a photographer LOL.

It is all about having good fun with a camera right? I'll test my tripod on the HsJ tomorrow, it is 10:30 pm over here but I wound forget.

Soooo I am not a very clever packer this is what I came up with.

This is with the sidestraps already on the HsJ. The bag itself is full but not stuffed. This looks to me, as if would not work with a stuffed HsJ. Though my Tripot is not delicate, infact it is a heavy beast.

Here I used two Smart Alec straps and attached them where you would attach the handle or a side pocket of the HsJ:

This is how the SA straps look with nothing straped to them.

And here the Top Pack as I would use it as a camera bag:

There is room for a scarf but for a water bottle I'd leve the extra lense case (black) at home. Flat items like filters would go into the outer zip pocket.

Hope this helps

@Ilkyway, thank you so much for posting the incredible photos... very helpful and much appreciated.
I think I should blame you if I ended up getting the bag because your photos make them look absolutely irresistible with real-life usage.
Especially since it almost exactly the same content that I would bring.
Though now i can imaging the bag will be a bit on the heavy side carrying it as a shoulder bag.
Cheers

Thanks for the more detailed picture! I usually try to carry just 1 lens with me during the day (on the camera) so this set up should work just fine.
