Stay tuned! In just a couple of hours we will be announcing new bags designed specifically for the new MacBook Air laptop.

Vertical and Horizontal Brain Cells (Size 6X) are now available for pre-order for the MacBook Air. (http://www.tombihn.com/blog/node/485)

More to come.

The MacBook Air is so thin it deserves an entirely new style of padded sleeve: Tom is working on the design and will continue to in the coming weeks.

For right now, there is the Size 6X Brain Cell and the soon-to-be-announced bag(s)..

Ok! You guys get to see this before anyone else does. :) (The page is still a work in progress!)

The Ristretto Messenger (http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/200/TB0223)

The Ristretto Messenger is a vertical messenger bag (similar to our Cafe Bags though different in proportion) with an interior compartment padded at the front, back, and bottom and sized specifically for your MacBook Air or 13" MacBook.

The above link and pictures on the page linked above also introduce a new addition to our color palette: Cayenne.

my wife is going to kill me, but i'm getting one!

a cafe bag design with a padded compartment for the macbook/macbook air is brilliant!

will the padded compartment design be similar to what's in the buzz?

also, i notice that the ristretto (please tell the story behinds its name :) is a bit smaller in dimension than the large cafe bag.

while it would be hard to choose between the plum/wasabi and olive/cayenne, i'd probably confuse myself going with the plub/wasabi since those are the colors of my large cafe bag :-). so the olive/cayenne it will be - i'm looking forward to having this color combination.

all of you black ballistic bag users out there, you have no idea what you're missing.

let me know if you need someone to try out a prototype :).

how will this fit laptops other than macbooks? I have a 12.1" toshiba, and looking at my girlfriend's 13" mac, it's slightly thicker(I doubt more than an eighth of an inch) the same depth, and narrower

I ask because I have a definite preference for vertical messenger bags, at least looks wise...

also, is it possible to get pictures of what this one looks like with a q-am strap, with someone wearing it? I can't quite picture how the vertical lay out will work with that strap...

Is the focus on this going to delay release of the small backpack? I don't have nor will have a mac.

haha, I had a similar reaction. =) There keeps being information on everything but the Synapse, which is all I care about right now.

eta: This does look fairly cool, but I'm not a big fan of the vertical layout (I mean, generally, I don't like vertical bags much), or the non extendingness of the front buckle which is my main problem with the cafe bag.

agreed on that one.. and it looks like the dimensions are slightly smaller where I need them to be slightly larger... now I"m wondering how much the sleeve adds to my laptop and if the buckle will lay flat, which the lg cafe bag doesn't with my laptop

Tom has been working on the design of the Ristretto for the past few months: a customer from the forums is currently testing a version of it with a built-in padded compartment sized for the EEE PC. As soon as the MacBook Air was introduced, we all looked at each other and said "The Ristretto would be the perfect bag to carry it!". So, no, no delays on the Synapse because of the Ristretto.

Ristretto (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ristretto) :)

It is a bit smaller than the Large Cafe: this bag is the answer for those of you who want to carry your laptop, power supply, a couple of cables, wallet, keys, and a magazine, and don't want a big bag.

Olive/Cayenne is a stunning combination, IMO!

Have you ordered your MacBook Air yet?

Everyone should keep in mind that the Ristretto is not yet officially announced: the Ristretto page allows those who read the forums to place a pre-order and see it before most everyone else does, but we will be adding many more pictures and more details about the bag as the first prototypes come out of the factory. Changes to the look and the design of the bag could still occur (that's up to Tom.)

So, no, no delays on the Synapse because of the Ristretto.

The other option would be to clone Tom. We could have a few Tom's running around designing bags!

Just think - we could have new product announcements every week!

We could even have a contest to have Tom and his clones design a bag for a particular purpose and let everyone on the forum vote to select who designed the best bag.

But wait! Do you see the tension building?... what will we name all the clones? how many clones should there be? how do we tell the different clones apart? what if one of the clones decides he wants to take over Tom's position? how will we know who the real Tom is? where are they all going to stay?

As all of these questions fly through everyone's heads in the forum, Tom ponders the most profound question of all: how are we going to feed all of these clones???

Hopefully, Tom doesn't have a big appetite! The last thing I want to find is a message in the forums saying that the Tom Bihn factory had to shut its doors because it was getting too expensive to feed the clones!

No - I'm waiting to play with it in the store, but everything about it sounds great. I felt uneasy about the non-replaceable battery at first, but it occurs to me that I hardly ever pull the battery out of my Macbook Pro, and I don't have an extra battery for the Macbook. I had gotten the second battery for the Macbook Pro when I took a business trip to India. I thought it would be good for the long haul flights. However, I don't use the computer for that long on a flight anyway :).

I have a Macbook right now (my personal machine), and the Macbook Air would replace that.

By the way, I hope no one is offended by my last post :-o.

I think the real question is what color combinations the clones will come in. :D
Cayenne/Olive/Plum or Kelly/Navy/Sapphire?

The real question for me would be whether we could order our own personal Tom Bihn clone... It would be really handy to have a clone ready to make customized bags at a moment's notice. :D

I'm looking forward to seeing more photos of the new Ristretto. I may need to get one even though my 12" Lenovo notebook should be "accidentally" dropped and replaced with a Macbook Air

Hello, is there any update on this bag-
I notice shipping is now March? Is that correct?
Will any colour selection ship on time, or should I select a particular colour?
Will there be a matching sleeve ready for shipping at the same time, or is the protection in the Ristretto sufficient without a sleeve?
Is there any sort of 'grab handle' on the bag, ie pick up without using the strap?

Anyway, I'm ordering as soon as I can clear this up, hoping to sing the praises of the Ristretto to the MBA owners asap.

The Ristretto will ship by early March at the latest. I'll most likely be posting pictures of the Ristretto holding a 13" MacBook tomorrow!

Olive/Cayenne will be the slowest color to ship.

No matching sleeve: the Ristretto has built-in protection.

Yes! Pictures tomorrow. :)

Has anyone had a chance to toss an Air into an Imago? I'm waffling between that and the ID (ID has handles, Imago comes with cork, yadda yadda) and would love to know how well an unsleeved Air fits.

Cool, I shall eagerly wait for pics, then order. It's a tiny beast, and a small bag is just the home it needs.

A customer brought an Air into our Seattle store yesterday. He didn't put it inside of the Imago, but it would definitely fit. However, I wouldn't recommend putting the Air in the Imago by itself -- if you want to carry your Air in the Imago and you don't want to wait for Tom's new sleeve design for the Air, you might consider using a Size 6 Horizontal Soft Cell to house your Air inside of the Imago. The Size 6 is going to be a bit big for your Air since it's sized for the MacBook, but it would be better than no protection.

Awesome. Now I just have to agonize over colours!

I think a bubble-padded mail envelope covered in duct tape will be just the right sort of chic. After all, isn't the point of the SSD that we don't have to baby them?

I saw this thread and the blog post about the new size 6x Brain Cell, but it looks like the Vertical isn't available for preorder. Are there any plans to include that in the lineup in the nearish future as advertised? Thanks!

Maybe: the Size 6X Horizontal Brain Cell fits well inside of the Brain Bag (http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/100/TB0104) and most other backpacks, so until we see a need for a Vertical version to fit in more narrow packs, we'll only make it in Horizontal.

Not to complain too much, as I've already pre-ordered, but are these pics going up on the site at any point?

I know, I promised pictures. But Tom decided to add a new extra pocket to the bag, so the pictures I took (with the MacBook inside of the bag) no longer accurately show the bag. I may be able to take a couple of more pictures today of the bag (with pocket but without the MacBook), though.

Yes! In fact, the Size 6X Brain Cell (http://www.tombihn.com/page/001/PROD/300/TB0300) in colors Black, Steel, and Crimson is in-stock. Backorders have been shipped out. The 6X in Cayenne will ship Monday/Tuesday.

Hi Darcy,

You might want to update the web page for the Horizontal Brain Cell so that the sidebar entries for "Which bags fit the Brain Cell?" and the list of weights for each Brain Cell include entries for the 6X. This item could also be added to the end of the "Quick hint for Mac users: . . ." listing in the main product description. At present, references to the 6X show up in the Laptop Fit list and on the "Select Size and Color" ordering options, along with the line under the Availability description." Might as well make it easy for potential customers to find references to this product everywhere on the page!
