Does TB plan on bringing back any other color of these besides what he currently has had for a while, black? I have had my SA for a while and have not yet seen the original original holcyon for a while. I bought mine before it became "original 400 holcyon".

I believe @moriond posted in another thread (from a post by Darcy) that only black is being made now.

Hi @pcproff,

Last October (10-28-2016), in the middle of the Padded Hip Belt Question (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/9263-padded-hip-belt-question-3.html) thread that discussed the then-new 1" padded hip belt (https://www.tombihn.com/products/1-padded-hip-belt) that works well with the Smart Alec, I asked Darcy (post #41):

@Darcy,

Please can you tell us when the upper and lower modular pockets for the Smart Alec will refresh?

Now that you've announced Black Halcyon/Island and Nordic/Northwest Sky SA combinations, I'm sure there will be more inquiring minds wanting to know!

She replied:

Good question! And.... well.... as the original plan was long ago, we're only making the Smart Alec modular pockets in Black Ballistic going forward. We did do one more batch of various Modular Pocket colors due to requests posted here on the Forums, but that was the very last batch.

At the time of that reply, there were still Upper Modular Pockets in Aubergine and Black Ballistic Nylon, along with Coyote. But there was basically only one batch of modular pockets made in the new Halcyon at the end of June, about the time the first Halcyon Smart Alec's were made in Nordic/Wasabi and Black/Iberian. (The pockets were also made in the original Black Halcyon) All of these Halcyon modular pockets sold out quickly (see my post #691 on 6-30-2016 (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/10257-discussion-new-colors-new-designs-post128237.html#post128237) in the Discussion of New Colors, New Designs (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/10257-discussion-new-colors-new-designs-47.html) thread).

You could use @Amy's hack (https://forums.tombihn.com/packing-lists-and-travel-tips/11048-taking-your-hobbies-you-post124462.html#post124462) and attach a Side Effect in place of an upper modular pocket via 1.5" Triangle Clips (https://www.tombihn.com/collections/parts-doodads-and-misc/products/parts?variant=16645156935):

I also summarized current alternatives of using either a Side Effect or a Side Kick in this May 2017 post:

@EmeraldYam,

As others have stated, this is a great first post and pictures. Just a quick comment on your nice configuration plans to use your Side Kick as an upper modular pocket on the Smart Alec. You've probably already checked this out, but I'd just thought that I'd comment that although @Amy's method of using a pair of 1-1/2 Triangle Metal Hooks (https://www.tombihn.com/products/parts?variant=16645156935) to attach a Side Effect or Side Kick works for older Smart Alecs, such as my late 2012 Aubergine Ballistic Nylon/Wasabi Smart Alec, the webbing loops of recent Smart Alecs, like my Black Halcyon/Island Smart Alec, seem to be much tighter, and I need to use a pair of 1.5" Single Gatekeeper Clips (https://www.tombihn.com/products/parts?variant=16645156615) instead, as @eliza did. (The 1.5" long Gatekeepers currently appear to be out of stock, but the link should be correct for the location if these get restocked).

Here's @Amy's attachment picture
https://forums.tombihn.com/attachments/photos-videos-and-reviews/17969d1493952545-12-days-singapore-smart-alec-a24e1d5877e6cc1cdc058c63a0684c54-jpg

Note that the webbing loop has to accommodate a curved triangle metal clip.

Here's @eliza's used of the 1.5" single gatekeeper clip on a Side Effect:
https://forums.tombihn.com/attachments/photos-videos-and-reviews/17970d1493952888-12-days-singapore-smart-alec-55059a59bbbf1ac677290a4b31abc850-jpg

I posted pictures (https://forums.tombihn.com/questions-about-bags/12125-halcyon-smart-alec-ballistic-upper-module-pocket-ump-post140661.html#post140661) of the Side Kick attached this way (with a pair of 1.5" Single Gatekeeper clips) in the Halcyon Smart Alec + Ballistic Upper Module Pocket (UMP) (https://forums.tombihn.com/questions-about-bags/12125-halcyon-smart-alec-ballistic-upper-module-pocket-ump.html) thread.

The reason for using the 1.5" long Gatekeeper clips instead of the 1" Gatekeepers is that the height of the Side Kick means that it pretty much covers the top of the Smart Alec. Given the position of the webbing loops, it will either ride unusually high or unusually low on the top of the Smart Alec if you use the 1" long Gatekeepers, and will look and feel less balanced.

https://forums.tombihn.com/attachments/questions-about-bags/17687d1489897684-halcyon-smart-alec-ballistic-upper-module-pocket-ump-img_3234-jpg

(The extra length of the 1.5" Gatekeeper lets the Side Kick sit centered on the top of the Smart Alec)

Notice that an Upper Modular Pocket (in Black Halcyon) looks more balanced for the top of the Smart Alec:

Just to summarize: the 1.5" Gatekeeper clips did get restocked. Since you have an older Smart Alec, you should be able to use either the 1.5" Triangle Clips or the 1.5" Gatekeeper Clips. On the more recent Smart Alecs, such as the Black Halcyon/Island Smart Alec shown in the pictures, I've found the webbing loops for securing the Upper Modular Pocket are sewn to be much tighter, and I can't fit the slightly curved shape of the 1.5" Triangle Clips through them, although this worked fine for Smart Alecs that were made when you bought your bag.

Cool idea to use the side kick instead. Would make a good one bag travel w/day bag option at destination. I just got the smart alec again in nNordic after previously rehoming a ballistic version. As said in another thread, color/fabric can impact a bag's staying power... I'm loving it!

using the SE instead of the UMP also works with the 1'' Single Gate Keeper on the out- as well as on the inside (my SA is pretty new just a few months old) https://forums.tombihn.com/photos-videos-and-reviews/4819-your-photos-needed-post143537.html#post143537

Hi @bartleby,

Yes, at the time @Amy originally posted her hack, I tried this (for the Side Effect) with the 1" Single Gatekeeper clips, too, and posted (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/10829-phase-out-white-black-400d-halcyon-post126142.html#post126142)
that this would work in the early 2016 thread discussing Phase-Out of White-on-Black 400d Halcyon (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/10829-phase-out-white-black-400d-halcyon-2.html). At that time they didn't routinely stock the 1.5" long Gatekeeper clips -- in fact, I think they didn't start stocking these under Parts until after I requested them in order to hack attaching a Citizen Canine onto the front of a Smart Alec (https://forums.tombihn.com/photos-videos-and-reviews/9830-new-citizen-canine-non-canine-use-post104687.html#post104687) without having to use Grimlocs (June 2016, and after the date of posted reference).

I think the balance of the Side Effect on top of the Smart Alec may be slightly better with the 1.5" long Gatekeepers, or the 1.5" Triangle Clips than with the 1" Single Gatekeeper Clips. Of course, you don't get as tight a fit to the 1" webbing where the Brain Cells are meant to be attached, but those 1.5" Gatekeepers will still work to suspend the Side Effect inside the Smart Alec that way.

The main reason for referencing the 1.5" Gatekeeper clips, and not linking to all the earlier posts discussing the 1" Gatekeepers is that the 1.5" Gatekeepers will work for placing both the Side Effect and the Side Kick where the Upper Modular Pocket would sit. The Single 1" Gatekeeper makes the Side Kick sit either too low or too high on top of the Smart Alec with the fixed placement of the webbing loops.

Hi @moriond,

thanks for your post! As I am a new Bihnian I am not that familiar with all the different hacks and I think its wonderful how many different solution exist for one challenge! You're right: with the 1'' GTC the SE sits real tight on the SA and a lttle low. However, I kind of like the snug fit of the 1'' GTC but I also ordered the larger ones too to be on the safe side. Meanwhile I also own a UMP which of course with its multiple fixings fits perfectly. However, I still consider the SE as more versatile and putting the UMP on and off can be a bit tedious...

I tried this hack tonight with a black SK and a Nordic SE and here are a few quick snaps of the results using the 1 inch single gatekeeper clips.
I also picked up some 1.5 inch triangle clips which are significantly chunkier and did not fit easily through the webbing loops. So I'll be sticking with the gatekeepers.
One thing I noticed is that this only really works when the S.A. is full or else the attached bag seems to hang off in a weird way - shouldn't be a problem though, the mod is for when we need extra space after all :)

I'll have to go look at my SA and take a pic... I have a halcyon SE attached to a halcyon SA using single gatekeepers and it doesn't hang quite the same way, so we may be attaching at different loops on the side...
Have you tried different sets of loops on the SA?

EDIT:
I think I'm attaching my SE to the same set of loops... basically the top two loops are left open and you hook through the next set down... I don't think I tend to stuff the SE full and my SA usually is full, so that's probably why I don't see it droop as much.

20850

Whilst taking the pic I realized that I had tried attaching a black TC to the lower loops, also with 1" gatekeepers through the side O rings and forgot to post about it, so here's the pic

20851

20852

The TC is much flatter in profile than the Lower Module Pocket...obviously holds less, but it works....since it's on the side O Rings, I wouldn't put gold bars or anything in there, but it's a great place to stash random smaller things and snacks.

@gqb is using 1" gatekeepers to attach the SE and SK. I have 1.5" gatekeepers to attach my SK to my SA and the top of the SK sits flush with the top of the SA. It only looks funky because of the boxy design of the SK and the rounded design of the SA, but I much prefer the SK as an UMP than the actual UMP organization-wise.

Yes, I thought it looked better on the upper set than the lower set, to my eyes at least.
