View Full Version : Desperately seeking softer bag strap

Okay, maybe not desperately, but still :D

I love my Side Kick. I knew I was going to love it when it came out last year, but I held off on buying right away for budget reasons... finally treated myself to one a few months ago, and while I am in love with the organization, the weight, the pockets and the size, I am a lot less in love with the strap. Something about the way the nylon is sewn/webbed just irritates my skin, and since I generally have at least my phone in there, plus wallet, notebook etc, the extra weight just makes it feel worse. I thought it might just be annoying me/digging in more because it's a 1" strap, and tried swapping in the strap from my old DLBC, but that didn't help at all, 1.5" just feels way too bulky in comparison, and still feels fairly itchy.

Has anyone else run into this issue? If so, how did you handle it? Searching the forums led me to try hitting up Lesportsac for a replacement strap, hopefully they'll get back to me soon and let me direct order one of theirs; I at least have some faith that theirs will work because all my old handbags were Lesportsac ones with nice soft straps. But if they really do turn out to be out of stock in these, I'm not sure where else to look. I've turned up a bunch of random tips re how to soften nylon straps, will try them as well on the original strap to see if they make any difference, but I'd like to know what else to try if that doesn't work.

You may like the OP/Tech Mini S.O.S. strap (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001TST8U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). It is essentially a smaller version of the Absolute Strap that TB sells, which means it has a very nice padded shoulder strap and is well adjustable, but is scaled down to be the appropriate size for the Side Kick and Side Effect. I use mine on my Side Effects most days, and sometimes on my Side Kick when I carry it, and love the upgraded strap. My only complaint (and I suspect the Side Kick may not have this issue, based on the few times I've used it) is that the Side Effect sometimes has a tendency to flip itself upside down when putting it on due to the rotation on the strap clips. Definitely not a complaint worth changing the strap for.

Shoulder strap wrap? Currently showing as "in production" but I'm guessing it'll be available again relatively soon.

There are also similar products made by other companies, I usually see them marketed as "diaper bag" accessories, but they are totally not just for diaper bags.

Hi @bobydont,

Welcome to the forums. I don't have the same issue with the Side Kick and the 1" wide webbing strap that you're complaining about, but I agree with @Meglet that the next strap I'd step up to is the OP/Tech Mini S.O.S strap that she linked. For perspective, this is the strap that I suggested for use with the Field Journal Notebook (similar size to the Side Kick), when it is stuffed full of drawing supplies. I'll excerpt a picture.

Some forum members have removed the ring binder section and substituted painting kits inside the FJN. You can also hack the strap attachment points of the FJN, so that you can switch to a heavier strap if you're carrying more weight inside the FJN. This strap hack, where you use a pair of 1" triangle clips ordered from the Parts page, is described in my post (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/9687-field-joirnal-weight-post120996.html#post120996):

Grey FJN with Op Tech Mini S.O.S. strap and wider Absolute Strap to right. Either strap my be attached via their snap hook ends to the hacked FJN triangle clip ends.

The FJN is really about the same size as the Side Kick, so the strap picture should give you a good idea of the proportions. Just to show this is true, here's one of the uploaded pictures of an Azure FJN inside a Black Halcyon Side Kick:
