I can beat that - I moved from the 12th floor to the 13th floor, to the EXACT.SAME.APARTMENT directly above (1217 to 1317) a couple years ago. In my defense, it was basically a forced move due to lease renewal shenanigans by the management company, to the point my leasing agent even said "you're right, moving 1 floor up would be better than renewing that lease."

bchaplin and Meglet...me too! I bought/sold/moved from one house to a different one in the same suburban neighborhood. People did think it was a little quirky at the time, but I'm still here so it worked for me.

They are Merrell Agave sandals and yes, they are super comfortable. I've worn them while traveling and walking lots of miles in a day with no issues. Highly recommend them.

Hello neighbor!
I had a quick brunch there last weekend with some new "mom friends" and it was quite good. And there were $1 mimosas. And I ate some deliciously decadent french toast. And it wasn't very expensive at all. I had never been there before, and we had actually planned on going somewhere else (but the lines were interminable and what mom has that kind of time??), but I'm glad I tried it. I'll probably go back. And the name really caught my eye! I don't think I'll ever see a restaurant named "Dyneema" but I will be on the lookout, just in case....

OMG, I just noticed that the SC is wearing something with *frilly sleeves*. Is that barrister get-up?

Not only are we all solicitor-advocates; we've done away with the wigs too (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supreme_Court_of_Singapore#Wigs).

Our SCs get to wear a silk robe instead of a poly one and bill through the roof, but that's about it :-\

John
06-16-2016, 08:18 AM
Yep, frilly sleeves plus a lace jabot, white gloves and silver buckled shoes!

A friend who's a Singapore SC mentioned about the silk robe for them only and that there's no ceremony in Singapore ? In Hong Kong on Saturday, it was standing room only in the Court of Final Appeal with judges, barristers, family and friends packed in for the occasion; and speeches from the Chief Justice, the Secretary of Justice (i.e. the justice minister), the Chairman of the Bar Association and the President of the Law Society congratulating the new SCs and telling "amusing" anecdotes about their lives and interests.

Thank you. My photo was too big. I got it smaller, I hope.

Because I simply cannot use a bag that does not have hand weaving on it somewhere, I added a keeper on each end of my AS, and a matching loop on each handle of my new WF.

16062

The photo is deceiving. The two handwoven loops are exactly the same because they are cut from the same strip of cloth, but the color they are sitting next to makes the apparent color look different.

My husband ALWAYS knows which bags are ours, because I've been doing this to our luggage for 30 years.

This is now several weeks old (pc troubles when I got home delayed me), but this is the A45 in the EasyJet sizer at the Southend Airport (waiting to go to Barcelona, Spain). I didn't cram it full, as I didn't want flack from the airlines or security.

16077

No problems getting it in.

16078

I was able to stand it upright in the overhead bins and save room for someone else's stuff. Both flights to and from Barcelona were packed, both in the baggage and the passenger numbers. My personal 'handbag' was the Makers Bag and it easily fit under the seat, even when I did cram the MB full. I checked the Yeoman duffle and it did just fine.

I think it suits that description. Definitely very classic-- I'd call it the colour of a wine stain (dark purple-red, but more purple and quite dark) and is a good year-round colour, though more F/W than S/S. Olive is nice too but it's classic in a different sort of way and I would say RB is a 'stronger' colour (if by that you mean a richer, more stand-out colour!).

Here's my Synapse next to the bed in our very rustic vacation cabin last week. "Rustic" apparently means that no nightstands are provided. The Synapse was an unexpectedly good choice for this trip, because the bottle water pocket was the most secure and accessible place for my glasses while I was sleeping, and also an upright slot into which to place my phone while it charged.

16344

I also tried out the "Second Aid" kit for the first time. I really like the concept -- one easily identifiable bag for emergencies. I was able to provide Neosporin and a Bandaid ("plaster"? for you Brits) when it was needed, and also a spare iPhone cord.

After a week in the wilderness of West Virginia, I now have a better idea of how to pack it for the next trip. In general, I had no idea of what was needed, and drove my car which was filled to bursting with all kinds of stuff. All of my family overpacked a bit because we didn't know what to expect. Next year I plan to fly most of the way, because I'm pretty sure I can fit my things into a suitcase, and avoid all that driving.

New Navy/Iberian Parental Unit just came by way of trade.

Some cool box art from the crew as well as a nice note. Just one of the little touches that make actually do make it a special delivery.

Love the Iberian lining. Could have gone with wasabi, which I am a big fan of, but I think the red is killer against navy.

Small shop bag folded flat in a size 2 stuff sack. Shop bag gets used all the time working at a grocery store. The stuff sack had held some smaller items in my Synapse but since those got redistributed into the PU's pockets it will now hold the shop bag and be on standby for extra storage.

Small pocket on the back side is good for a notebook. My phone will fit in there too but that's usually on my person.

So the outer pockets are filled up with most of the EDC stuff and incidentals, either loose or in pouches. There's nothing in the main compartment here. My water bottle will figure to ride in here most of the time. I have a few I rotate between and in some test packing it seemed most convenient to keep it inside rather than in an outer pocket. My lunch box will fit but has to go in with the long axis up and then rotate 90 degrees to be able to close the top zipper. The lunch box's shape and size is not a great match for the tapered nature of the PU main compartment so I will look at other options for sandwich containment.

Overall I really like the accessibility of the pockets. Very well thought out and executed, not that we expected anything less. The PU is an interesting pattern and it will take some time to figure out the best way to utilize the bag's shape but that's half the fun, right?

After many months of attempts, I finally perfected the camera insert/shoulder strap combo on my Maker's Bag so that it hugs and carries properly but still has room inside for everything. As a result I've been using it more often, and yesterday it made a rare trip to the office since I didn't need to carry my usual backpack-requiring quantity of "stuff."

I'm using the updated Timbuk2 Snoop Small, with a spare divider from one of my Tenba BYOB inserts. Once I get the hooks sorted properly for the Tenba BYOB 9 that I have in my Smart Alec, I might just switch that over as the Timbuk2 insert is a little. . . weird. Doing it all over again, I'd probably go straight for the Tenba. I need to get some updated photos of the MB-as-camera-bag, because with the right insert and shoulder strap it works really well (I prefer the Simple Strap so I can slide the strap through the pad when swinging the bag around.)

*note, this is for a m4/3 camera, albeit a relatively large one - the Panasonic GX8.

Spent another beautiful day at the beach with my French Blue S19. We always go to Gateway National Recreation Area (Sandy Hook) (https://www.nps.gov/gate/index.htm).

16410

After a day on the beach, I always want to change out of my wet, sandy bathing suit so I pack a change of clothes into my PCSB.

16411

I forgot to take a bag picture while we were eating an early dinner at Bahr's (http://bahrslanding.com), but I did take a few other shots. This restaurant has been around for 99 years, and sits right on the Navesink River. They have a new outdoor bar/dining area, which is a great place to hang out after you've been on the beach all day.

16412

16413

Our first round of food included such low-fat, low-calorie items as beer, lobster bisque and Cajun popcorn shrimp :-)

16414

We even had a show with dinner - these guys got busted by the Coast Guard for speeding and throwing a huge wake, and when the CG boarded their boat they must have found something interesting because they seized the boat.

16415

All in all, an exciting day :-)

It was fun to bring my Shop Bag of Trader Joe's groceries to the register and tell the cashier to put everything back the way it was currently.

Of course I only had a few things, or it would have been a mean thing to ask.

But between that and paying with my watch, I was out the door in seconds.

I cut up the 5/8" shoulder strap to get the snap hook parts, and hand wove a tablet woven band to replace the black strap. Then I snapped the finished handwoven band to my new SE.

16536

I'm not sure why the long 5/8" shoulder strap is $3.00 while an 8" keystrap with the the same (actually fewer) bits of hardware is $5.00, so I ordered an extra shoulder strap and cut it up for parts. It also gives me an idea for customizing my key strap lengths.

Just at a guess @BWeaves, they tend to make up accessories like the 5/8" shoulder strap in large quantities, so it can be a while before they have to revisit production costs and adjust the price up. That was the case, too for the Field Journal Notebook Strap, which can be used for other bag hacking (see @jujigatame's Making other bags better with TB-sourced hardware (https://forums.tombihn.com/questions-about-bags/8469-making-other-bags-better-tb-sourced-hardware.html) thread for an example). You can also use the FJN strap if you want to shoulder carry a Snake Charmer:
https://forums.tombihn.com/attachments/questions-about-bags/10740d1426226491-founders-briefcase-packing-wedge-imageuploadedbytapatalk1426226821-308423-jpg
Closeup showing the detail of how the Gatekeeper Clip at the end of the 1" wide FJN strap connects to the webbing loops of the FJN and Snake Charmer.

However, another reason for the higher 8" keystrap pricing compared to the 5/8" shoulder strap is that, in general, the different key straps that are not just black webbing, but were either 200d Halcyon or the earlier Codura colored versions, require more stitching and work to align the squares and double over the fabric.
https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/fe/59/98/fe5998cf6e11dfac0ffe8797aaa0f855.jpg

Darcy even commented, back in 2014 when the last of the Cordura key straps were sold (8" Olive), in reply to a question about whether Nordic might join the lineup of Dyneema/Halcyon key straps:

It's surprising how much Dyneema it takes to make Key Straps! Mostly because to make Key Straps the fabric used needs to be "split" and that's usually most efficient if we split a whole roll of fabric (or close to one). So, you probably won't be seeing Nordic Key Straps as we're saving Nordic to make other bags, but I do hear other colors of Key Straps (in both lengths) are in the works….

And since they tend to adopt single item pricing for simplicity, the price for all 8" key straps is the same, regardless whether it is plain black webbing or colored.

HTH as an explanation

moriond

BWeaves
09-19-2016, 05:06 PM
Thanks moriond. I thought it might have to do with having to "make" a strap out of the Halcyon fabric vs. the black strap which is already woven to the correct width.

I just got a boat load of shop bags today, and every one of them came with a black keystrap, so I cannibalized one and made a long key strap (or short purse strap of about 24") with my left over tablet woven band. This photo gives you a better look at the pattern.

16538

Now I'm tempted to weave more bands and make my own custom keystraps. I can even weave lettering, so I'm tempted to do something wordy.

I've also bought some extra hardware from the accessories page in case I want to weave wider bands.

Love the Black Halcyon!

16792

When all the overhead storage space on the Air Canada Rouge flight was hogged by Zone 1-3 passengers with oversized rollaboards, folks in Zones 4 - 5 were left in a bind, but the S25 slid comfortably under the seat in front of me (even though Rouge's are some of the most scroogishly-undersized seats out there). Score: Rouge 0, TB 1!

PS - Was appreciating how much traveling with TB bags has improved my travel experiences when I picked up the in-flight magazine (Air Canada En Route) and chanced across a full page on "le Multipoche" Tri-Star: as close as I've come to a wild TB bag sighting. lol

The in-flight magazine article seems up to date, but I'm slightly sad that the current logo tags for the Tri-Star have dropped the original triangular logo, and now use the more generic logo tags of most of the travel bags (as shown in your open page spread) I think that on the Tri-Star product pages, only the pictures of the Original Halcyon version currently sports the older, inverted triangle logo.

I woke up early this morning. It's the first day of my vacation. Florida. Family. Rest. I need it all!

Anyway, I brought my Hero's Journey along for the ride. Granted, it's not hiking in the rugged outdoors, but the HJ doesn't seem to care. It's equally at home in the urban setting.

Here are a few of my photos. I really loved packing this bag. It was my first time using it outside of its more usual occupation, that of spinning wheel bag.16910
Here is the bag packed up. I'm only traveling for four days, but I had things for other family members to bring along, so I am carrying much more than usual.

16911
This is one of the items I'm bringing for family. Our college aged son is sick and asked for cough drops. They fit perfectly in the end zipper pocket.

16912
I don't have packing cubes for this bag, so I am making due with some that I bought in my pre-TB days.

16913
This is what I'm carrying in the detachable bag portion. It is holding my cosmetics and a few other necessary items.

16914
And this is the sleeping bag compartment. It's filling duty as carrier of gifts, etc. for other members of the family.

The bag functions incredibly well. I was able to manage it. Rather than put it in backpack orientation, for this trip I used the Absolute Strap and carried it suitcase style. Our family is representing TB well. On this trip we are bringing the following:

Hero's Journey
Tri Star
Aeronaut 45
Maker's Bag (2)
Swift
Pilot
Three Travel Trays
And many TB accessories such as packing cubes, key straps, travel stuff sacks, and more!

My order arrived first thing this morning which was a really great surprise as I wasn't expecting it until later in the day. Great way to start the week!

The A30 packing cube backpack will be very useful, and I'm pleased to have got something in sitka which is such a pretty colour. If only it could become a permanent part of the range. The absolute highlight for me though was the small double organiser pouch which I think is olive. I love the colour!

Thank you to everyone at Tom Bihn for the excellent products and service.

Got my box o' goodies yesterday and I loved seeing the Christmas card in there! The contents are all gifts I'll be giving to my family except for the large Sitka shop bag; that baby is mine. (:

Others pictured here are a steel/fjord little swift, island large travel tray and an aubergine mini q-kit.

This is my first time seeing fjord up close in person and I have to say it is one gorgeous looking color. Wow!

The Side Kick (SK) inside of the Little Swift is an amazing combination:

- It stands up on its own.

- This still wouldn't be my everyday winter bag, but if you are caught in bad weather, you know that the delicate electronics you may be carrying can be safely secured in the SK and will remain dry.

- It is also a bit more pickpocket-proof than the Little Swift on its own, particularly if the top is latched shut.

- The perfect subway bag, as no unzipping is required to pull out your train pass. (Or car keys.)

- Extra items you may need to carry can be slipped around the edges of the SK.

Absolutely love the steel/Fjord.

Anyway, I thought the spinning project looked pretty in my Nordic TT. I'm doing it on a Trindle. Anyway, the cat photobombed it. She loves to wreck pictures!

I know the issue! One of your pictures looks fine on my phone, but not on my computer.
What I do with photos is to send them to my computer, and even if they appear to be in the correct orientation, rotate the picture 360 degrees and save it again. This seems to lock it in so it displays correctly.

And then the new shop bags are happily awaiting my arrival at the grocery after work.

@Mausermama,

I'm on my Mac laptop now (usually I access the forums on an iPhone or iPad), so I downloaded your image (the first one, I think), opened it in Preview, did a Command-R to rotated it to upright orientation, saved it with Command-S, then edited your post (since I have moderator privileges) to upload the correctly oriented version as a new image attachment, and deleted references to the previous two uploaded images. Hope this is OK and that this looks the way you want it to appear! (In general I can't handle this from an iOS device -- no room for saving lots of forum images and editing them, more limited bandwidth connections, and too many steps to easily handle image editing and cleanup operations operations for image attachments)

@bchaplin, I wrote up an explanation post (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/11108-posting-pictures-post125796.html#post125796) of what's happening in the Posting Pictures (https://forums.tombihn.com/general-bag-discussion/11108-posting-pictures.html) thread in July.

Generally, I view the images that I want to transfer and/or upload to the forums on my iPhone in a mode or app that allows photo editing then rotate and save/export them in the correct orientation before I do the transfer. Or you can use the method @NWHikergal mentions in that thread of mailing yourself the picture (taking advantage of the option of cutting the image down to smaller manageable size) , then opening it on your computer and rotating it to the desired orientation before uploading.

ETA: If your PC shows the mailed image in the correct orientation, it may mean that the Application you are using to display the image is capable of reading the EXIF data and orienting the picture accordingly. Check to see whether you can view thumbnails of those images. Thumbnail versions of images don't contain the data to orient images using EXIF data from your iPhone's camera and gyroscope. That's why if you view the images in the forum Attachment gallery you'll see them with the same orientation as your web browser will display.

That must be what is happening. I did check thumbnails as well (tiny pictures, right?) and they seemed to orient themselves correctly as well. I will keep trying. I do feel like a complete ninny for not being able to figure out what, to my understanding, so many of the rest of you all have just fine!

And thank you for fixing me up. I know it takes time out of your day to do that, and I truly appreciate it.

Blessings to you!

Handwoven keystrap.

17195

Handwoven ribbons to add to my Doggienaut 36. I think they blend in too much with the aubergine of the bag. I think I need to weave some brighter ones in more contrasting colors so they stand out more.

17196

It helps me and my husband find our bags quickly. I always know the handwoven ribbons are mine.

17197

I keep debating if I shouldn't have put the second ribbon on the other side of the bag where the strap attaches, instead of both on the same side / bottom.

I think my next attempt will use the colors in the Skookum Dog logo.

@Mausermama, one other thing I will sometimes do to upload photos I have taken on my iPhone is first log into the site on my computer and post the text and save the post. Then I open Tapatalk on my iPhone and select the option to edit the post, and I individually upload the photos from my iPhone and choose the option to upload a smaller size photo (640x480 I think) - the photos seem to automatically orient correctly. Just a suggestion, since it sounds like you also have an iPhone. :)

Nothing wrong with my previous handwoven ribbons except they blended in too much to the Doggienaut 36. I want them to jump out so I can tell it's my bag. So I wove ribbons in the colors of the Skookum Dog label. Two ribbons for the D36 (this time attached on opposite corners of the bag, and one new keystrap.

I just went through the same exact thing, flying into London this morning. I've always kept the Side Effect on the entire flight, as it holds my passport, wallet and cell phone. I wore the Side Kick this time. It works much better, because everything has a more secure place with all those internal pockets. However, I was in the exit row with the flight attendant facing me from the jump seat as we landed. I was huddled in a blanket so he didn't notice until after, but then I got a whole spiel about how this was against European regulations, it could snag on the inflatable slide if we had to evacuate, etc etc. I will probably switch back to wearing the Side Effect next time. It is easier to tuck under my arm so it remains unnoticed.

On our recent flight to London I jammed my SK into the seat pocket. Not ideal. It was a little to tight. On the flight back I had it sitting next to me between myself and the arm rest on my left side. No issues. Nothing said. Probably just didn't get caught though. This was on Delta. I was on the isle both times.

I didn't end up keeping it on. The Ipad in it felt stiff and i felt like it looked too big. I think I'll keep my side effect in the rotation for such situations although I like that my iPad fits in it! There are pros and cons

17277My medium cafe bag is just the right size for my EDC because it has plenty of room to carry small purchases and other things I might add during the day--such as a couple of baguettes from our local patisserie when my hands were too full to carry them!

Christmas anywhere in Australia is an unusual experience for someone like me who hails originally from a colder climate in the northern hemisphere, but when one lives in the tropics, it can feel downright backwards! As it's summer, the Christmas menu often includes seafood. Prawns (aka shrimp) are a big favourite; our local seafood shop is open all night on the 23rd. This morning we decided we hadn't purchased enough prawns, so I returned for more. They are tucked behind my MCB, in a grey chiller bag with ice, sharing the seatbelt with a bucket of local mangos. Yep, Christmas season means mangos and cherries!

I've been painting the bedroom over the holiday period and sleeping on a sofabed in the lounge. My new sitka travel tray has been very useful for storing daily essentials that I normally keep in the bedroom and don't really have a place for in the lounge. It helps bring a little bit of order to a very disorganised house and means I can find things easily.

ETA: I like the way that the Dr. Who figurines stay with the bag. When last seen in the forums, as I recall, that figurine was attached to @Ilkyway's original Nordic Halcyon Smart Alec in a "Bihnions in Berlin" moment in March 2016.

Here's what I've been waiting for all week, my brand new A30! Isn't she a beaut? The black halcyon/island colorway looks amazing in person.

This is my one year Bihn-iversary from when I got my first ever TB item last year, so I thought I'd treat myself to a desperately needed overnight bag.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170120/9afd8cc493815b622f2e9f50f09bda86.jpg

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170120/f8a44e78d4cdf3c25e8d185ea0ef3677.jpg

Here's everything that's going in it for my 2-3 night trips:

A45 PCBP with a couple changes of clothes
PCSB in monarch for an extra pair of shoes
PCSB in Sitka for my toiletries including contact solution, medication, toothbrush, and so on
Pillow - which I've had since I was a kid. I can't sleep without it!

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170120/6b53400a9ae4a35f041ad7aa097072f4.jpg

I really love how the black, Sitka, and island look together.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170120/9efafcb5b9d64be4d7cab788e17826f9.jpg

All packed up. I can actually fit more into it as well which surprised me, but is also reassuring that I can squeeze a few extra items in if I ever needed to.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170120/195194d8e58a0e0a8abb95db3b6daf4c.jpg

Not sure if this is true of other TB bags that have the backpack straps, but inside the area where my backpack straps are, there's a little bit of original halcyon to go along with the black and the island. Something neat I thought would be photoworthy.

I have been packing like a madwoman for a move, and I ended up loading up many of my TB bags with clothes and miscellaneous things. While this isn't a great photo and there is a messy background, I thought a side view of someone who is 5'3" wearing a Hero's Journey might be helpful for any petite folks considering it.

I love the steel/UV combo, and I was fortunate to trade another forum member for this vintage Co-Pilot. Though clearly the CP has been tweaked over the years, and there are improvements in the newest models, I'm enjoying the old-style look and tags of this one. I still maintain that the "Portable Culture" tag was the best one :)

The Co-Pilot has made a return as my every-day bag, because the Side Kick fits so well in the back. With the Side Effect, there'd been an awkward amount of wasted space, but the SK is perfect. All the overflow stuff, like winter gear, goes in the front pockets.

Today I took my A30 Packing Cube Backpack out for a walk at Otari Wilton's Bush (http://wellington.govt.nz/recreation/enjoy-the-outdoors/gardens/otariwiltons-bush/visitor-information) which is a suburban park with some of Wellington's remaining original indigenous forest. It's a great place for a cool walk on a hot day. Despite the heat,we could hear quite a lot of bird life. The backpack held a jacket, water bottle, wallet, phone and smaller bits and pieces really well. I'm looking forward to using it as a packing cube later this year.

Loving my SK a lot. Right now I use it inside my SA to hold some essentials. As I do not need a shoulderstrap right now (it carries very nicely under the arm like a clutch) I needed a way to hang it. Because on travel, when I have to use the restroom I often leave the SA in the car and just bring this little guy.
This is the solution I came up with:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170220/12a6a494d4f018e3236773e6cea3f4be.jpg

Ilkyway

PS: my SK is not very heavy and since the keystrap distributes the weight over two O-Rings I feel comparable that this wound do any harm. Just putting this in here because I remember Darcy mentioning I think regarding the Swift or Little Swift, that O-Rings are not made to carry a heavy load like an entire bag. Someone had suggested using the O-Rings to attach a shoulder-strap there.

Minted peas. What is it?

I do not generally like peas, but these were amazing! They were peas with mint mixed in served cold, and they were an incredibly bright and refreshing balance to the lightly battered fish. I am not sure how the ones I tried were prepared, but there are tons of recipes on the internet if you search for "minted peas." Here's one: English Peas with Mint recipe | Epicurious.com (http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/english-peas-with-mint-232121)
