Tips for Daylight Backpack packing for a compartment lover?

I purchased both the daylight backpack and luminary 15 to try out. My intended use is an in-flight personal item bag and potential daypack.

My typical in-flight stuff is:

Nintendo Switch in case
Bose QC25 headphones in case
Amazon Fire 8in tablet
Kindle Paperwhite
Small snake charmer
3D organizer cube
Sun glasses
Phone
Side-effect with wallet and keys.

I put all this in both the luminary and daylight. The luminary felt too compressed and none of my bulky things would easily fit in the side pockets, so I'm sadly going to be returning it.

The daylight worked, however, I had to put everything (minus the phone and sunglasses) in the main compartment and it felt too jumbled since everything was stacked on top of each other. I really only need access to a few things in-flight (tablet, Kindle, switch, Bose headphones), the rest I'd prefer tucked away so they don't interfere with what I need access to.

I just really love separate compartments in my bags and I really miss that in the daylight backpack. I know there's also the briefcase version, but for a daybag, I'd much rather have a backpack vs a shoulder bag.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to pack to avoid the jumbled mountain of things in the main compartment?

While I don't have those particular items to try, perhaps add a medium Freudian slip, as it might create an organized space for many of those items.

With the Daylight Backpack, I use a small Freudian Slip in the top pocket and suspend a Side Effect from the two o-rings (using two small carabiner). Leaves plenty of room under the SE for other organizers, jacket, books, whatever.

I’ve been using my new DLBC as an EDC on vacation, and I’ve been pleased that things don’t jumble at the bottom as much as I expected. I’ve probably been lucky with the amount/size/density/position of the things I’m carrying.

Along the bottom I’ve had a few of the following: a smallish water bottle, a milk thermos of similar height, a 3DOC, a Side Effect, and a large kids’ camera. Above those things I’ve had things like: a size 2 travel stuff sack lightly packed with snacks, a size 2 travel stuff sack of hats and scarves, a down vest stuffed in its own pocket, and a hoodie for my daughter. I put my Travel Cubelet (purse) in the front exterior pocket for easy access when I’m not wearing it separately.

Because the bottom layer is fairly tightly packed both front to back and left to right, the top layer(s) stay on top nicely. It also probably helps that the top layer consists of lighter things.

Do you think you could make a thicker bottom layer with the things you don’t need access to on the plane? A PCSB that isn’t packed too full width-wise can fit at the bottom and might help make an even, thicker bottom layer if you have one to play around with.

I’m really loving my DLBP after using it extensively the past week plus. The only parts I don’t love are the diagonal front zipper (I wish it zipped the opposite way so I could reach in with my right hand more easily while still on my shoulder) and the interior pockets that I haven’t found a way to use effectively (so at the moment I wish there were just one pouch that went all the way down the bag for larger things I want to keep flat).

When I bought my first DLBP I also got a SE because everyone loved that bag and said it would make sense to use it to add internal organisation to the backpack. I never used it because I hated how complicated it made everything and I sold it.

To me the DLBP works best when I make use out of the two pockets and put things into them as they are. So not too many smaller bags in the backpack.

I pack in a way that the essentials are easily accessible on the go and the less important things are safely stowed away. Which means, that everything that I want to just grab in between needs to be in the outer pocket or the top inside pocket (both easily accessible when wearing the backpack and swivelling it to the front).

This means:

• Wallet and phone are in the top inside pocket, papers and passport go there too, if I carry them
• The outside pocket gets keys, tissues and an OP on a key strap which has all the small stuff in it that I don't want to just put inside on its own (lip balm, lens cleaning cloth, a pen ...)

This means the stuff in the front pocket is fairly slim or falls to the bottom, so it's easy to add random things on the go when you just need a place to put things quickly.

If I carry my iPad or my e-reader I put them in the lower inside pocket. TB recommends padding the back panel with clothing, but I rarely carry suitable items in my DLBP. I found that placing those slim rectangular items like iPad/book etc there instead works just as well. Taking those out of the lower pocket takes a bit of effort when it's packed like this, but then I only get them out when I'm sitting down somewhere and staying for a while.

I usually carry my camera in the DLBP, which fits in a Tenba BYOB 7. That insert fits well at the bottom of the main compartment and leaves room for a water bottle next to it. I rarely take the camera out in transit, if I want to take a picture on the plane or train I use my phone. And this way it's out of the way and I can put other things on top of it (most often food or a scarf).

So I can't really help you with the bag tetris concerning the bags you have and want to carry in the DLBP, but I encourage you to simply use those existing pockets on their own and see how you like it.

I went from TR+COpilot to A30+DLBP. I also switched to DLBP as my edc. For internal organization I added side effect and a 3D halcyon cube. I also have a tethered mini pouch for wallet type of things. And couple of tethers in front zip for keys and AirPod case. Having things loose is annoying but I don’t see myself going back to copilot. SE is key for my stuff. It has my cards (I have a slim minimalist wallet so extra cards etc go into side effect. ), extra medication in pill bags in the side pocket. Front side effect has a folding knife etc. field notes in the main compartment etc. I use the strap on it as well as I tether it when in the bag. On the weekends when I need a separate gym bag I’ll just throw the SE into it. Same when I drive to the store etc I’ll leave my DLBP in the car and just take the SE with me.

I literally just signed up to ask an eerily similar question (as eerie as a question about a backpack can be, I suppose)

I got a Daylight to carry on an overseas vacation and would like a few other small spaces to hook other accessories. I got a medium double pocket organizer and was thinking of a mini or small Ghost Whale and a mini or small Q Kit.

Love the idea of the #2 Stuff Sack for whatevers, as well.

I have a non-TB similarly unorganised backpack. I can *highly* recommend a pocket pouch. I have mine clipped to an O-ring I installed in the upper back of the backpack, where it holds lip balm, a set of glasses screwdrivers, a couple of headache pills, a pen, and a pocket knife. Like a teeny tiny repair and health kit. Would be easy to put a couple of bandaids in as well...

Oh -- I also carry a little bag (like a 3DOC) filled with creative stuff (paints and a sewing kit); and another little bag with cables and a Kindle reader. Outside pocket has passport and travel makeup case. Otherwise I carry an A5 journal (sometimes two) and glasses, and a pencil case (in an outside pocket -- if I had the DB I would tether it).

I'm not sure what you're asking--are you wondering if the size 2 Travel Stuff Sack fits in the front zip pocket of the Daylight Backpack flat if the TSS (travel stuff sack) is empty or only has flat things in it? If so, the answer is yes... but I'm not sure if that's what you were asking. If you fill the TSS to capacity, it will make a very obvious bump when you put it in the front pocket of the Daylight Backpack.

By the way, there is also a Daylight Briefcase so be careful about just using the word "Daylight" to refer to either one! Beware of their similar acronyms too: DLBP vs DLBC.

I think a mini or small Ghost Whale and/or Q-Kit is a great idea, but I am slightly biased because I tend to like having just the right pouch or pocket for each thing. If that's your style too, then go for it! And the size 2 TSS is the size I turn to most often--I find it very useful for holding a cardigan or a carefully rolled rain jacket (carefully rolled because that's the only way my rain jacket will fit) so they don't get wrapped around and mixed into everything else in my bag.

Agreed! I love the DLBP and use it as a packable travel pack and daily-carry bag. It’s great and versatile — until you overstuff it.
So for me this ‘flat’ business is a good idea. Gospel. Otherwise your are robbing Paul’s main compartment to pay Peter’s front pocket. And then it gets difficult find whatever is crammed into either.
Typically I am most happy when the front pocket only includes my keys (loose in the pocket) and my bus pass (tethered to the o-ring in a flat TB organizer thing). This way i always have easy access to those two things and can use the main compartment for whatever works that day

For everyone that has a DLBP: How are the straps? I am considering getting one as an EDC that I can throw my SE into along with all the stuff my kids need. But the straps are deterring me. I purchased and returned the packing cube BP because I hated the boxy straps. It looks like the DLBP straps are sewn on a little differently (at more of an angle?) For the price I wish it had more traditional BP straps :/
