iPad Pro & how it fits in TB bags

I usually carry an iPad Pro (11", 4th gen, W: 7.02" - H: 9.74" - D: 0.23" - slightly bigger w/slim case) so I'll be trying it out in different TB bags.

First is a Side Kick (Black Ballistic) with size large double swivel carabiners. The SK will not zip (you can see the pink iPad case), but I'm considering options for hanging a bag from the airplane seat back and don't really need it to zip when holding the iPad.

*Edited to add: This model iPad does not fit into a zipped-up 400d Halcyon Side Kick either. (without an iPad case the SK will barely zip, but only if iPad is carefully inserted and SK is almost empty).

The set up pictured is my favorite in-flight option so far - I can leave my EDC items in the SK, then remove the iPad from my carry-on and temporarily slip it into the SK during flight, eliminating the need for an in-flight specific bag (or having to move items from EDC to an in-flight bag).

Wow … I'm surprised the 11" iPad (barely) fits in the Side Kick! Who knew? XD

I have the larger 12.9" iPad Pro, which I usually carry in a Medium Cafe Bag if I'm going to a coffee shop or a friend's house. I've also carried it in the main pocket of my Co-Pilot when I need to travel with a few more items or a bit more security/organization. I also have a Luminary 15 in which it will slip into the laptop pocket, but I haven't had a chance to go anywhere with that bag yet.

I also have an iPad Mini which usually travels either in my Side Kick, or in one of the end pockets of my Aeronaut 30 when I'm traveling. I've been kicking around the idea of getting a Small Cafe Bag for it as well.

This is one of those situations where you can likely close and zip your Side Kick if it is 400d Halcyon but not if it is Ballistic Nylon. And this kind of discussion goes all the way back to the original introduction of the double swivel carabiner clips with the Knitting Tool Pouches at the end of 2013, but with first pictures posted in January 2014 about the use of these accessories to transform bags (the, the Side Effect) into seat pocket bags.

For context, at that time we referred to the fabric as “Dyneema” instead of Halcyon (The fact that Dyneema was associated with a particular brand name led to a later name change of “Halcyon”.) The fabric shown is what we now call “Original Halcyon” with a light grid. And those are what are now termed the Medium Double Swivel Carabiner Clips, which were then purchased either with Knitting Tool Pouches (recently retired), or as separately ordered items from Parts.

In the second thread I post pictures of my open OG Halcyon Side Effect holding items like the 1st Generation iPad Mini in a SwitchEasy hard case, Kindle Paperwhite, and other items. Since these threads were started by other forum members you can read comments and examine the discussion and pictures posted by the original posters and other forum members.

My intent with this thread is for contributors to mainly focus on sharing how these particular models of iPads (Pro versions) fit into TB bags (a SK w/ clips for hanging just happened to be the first example photo/comments I shared - I do understand that many posts showing swivel clip/seatback configurations already exist). The search function on the forums doesn't seem particularly robust, so my goal was to begin a simple, targeted post with appropriate tags/keywords directing future searchers in a focused manner (maybe eliminating the need to read through more posts or content than necessary when only basic/specific information is sought).

For: iPad Pro 11", 4th gen, in a slim case:

Side Kick (Night Walk 400 Halcyon) - iPad does not fit if SK is zipped (will fit if a corner is left unzipped as shown). As noted in post #1, this iPad without a case will barely fit when SK is zipped, but only if it's carefully inserted and the SK is almost empty...so functionally it does not really fit).

BeachMom I do carry the 11” iPad Pro. I was trying to emphasize the fact that the material combination you choose may be a factor in whether/how well these combinations work for you, be cause in many instances what “works” depends on how well or robustly the fit is judged. And this was brought to mind by the old discussion about whether the Side Effect could hold the iPad Mini, that coincidentally started when I posted pictures of using it as a seat pocket bag in analogy with your picture of the Side Kick.

If you want an example of some different bags that I use for the 11” iPad Pro, I’d point you to the Icon and the Little Swift. But I use an old, oversized cache that will actually fit the iPad 11 Pro + Magic Keyboard, so here’s a quoted section of my reply from the Does 12A Cache fit in back pocket of Maker's Bag? Thanks for clarifying. Strangely enough, I think that the oversized iPad cache from 2010 that I’m using for my 11” iPad Pro would match what you’re looking for. I had to run down an old forum thread Frank II started in 02-26-2014 titled Size Specs for Cache. Here’s the link to post #5 that I’ll quote:

When the first generation iPad debuted, they offered a cache that was labeled as an iPad/Netbook Cache on the product page. They didn’t record the dimensions in a place that I can currently access (not even the old product pages), but I measure it as exterior dimensions of 8.6” x 10.6” — consistent with dimensions that the Tom BIHN customer support person summarized.
Let me put it this way: this cache was slightly oversized for the original iPad, which was 0.5” taller than the 11” iPad Pro; you have the quarter inch. In fact, since the older design cache has a flap closure, there is additional flexibility in accommodating the height direction even without the default design being sized for it.

Here are some pictures to illustrate this sizing. Back in December 2020 I answered a question posed by Go Navy about whether he could carry his iPad (Air) along with checkbooks, glasses, wallet, notebook and a few other items in an Icon with a sample packup, where I used the redesigned Icon to show the fit. I’ll show two of the photos:

The 11” iPad Pro is lying on top of its oversized cache to the right of the Icon in Constellation.I’ve got over 1.5” more than I need in the (here horizontal) direction from the cache. The other direction in the cache is also slightly oversized. I like using the caches and padded pouches from this period because they have a very dense foam design that I prefer. The charcoal grey color option is one of the characteristics of this period; later caches were only made in black, while padded pouches were available in charcoal grey, black, and platinum (a light grey). This is a horizontal cache with the flap closure along the left.


View of the 11” iPad Pro in cache inserted in Portrait mode orientation into Icon. (it can be rotated 90° after insertion, but particularly because the cache is oversized, it’s more convenient not to rotate it after insertion.

I still don’t know whether there’s a current size cache better suited to your needs. My experience of the zippered version caches is that the fits are tighter.

These are some of the pictures from Makers Bag vs Icon that show the iPad 11 Pro in the original version of the Icon. It is inside the pocket in landscape mode. And while I could put my iPad 11 Pro with cache inside the original Icon in landscape mode by rotating it in, there would have been too many explanations about why I was using a nonstandard cache. That’s the Small Packing Cube from the Western Flyer behind it in the main Icon zippered pocket, and it’s packed with clothing.

Here’s another question: is the intention to discuss carrying the 11” iPad Pro with attachments like a keyboard? Because small backpacks like the Paradigm and the Zeitgeist are designed to carry the bare 11” iPad Pro inside a dedicated padded pocket, but if you had an attached keyboard or case for the that 11” iPad Pro, you’d have to move it out of the padded pocket into the main compartment of the bag. On the other hand the Sprout Kid’s Pack (version that was redesigned at the end of April 2017 to better hold letter size paper and folders, with the consequence that it is both taller – by nearly an inch – slightly wider, and with webbing backpack straps that fit more easily on small adult frames) is technically retired, although low stock versions of this have appeared up through about a week ago. And a cache, or your case could be held in portrait mode inside the elastic zipper pocket, since it’s wider than the Paradigm and Zeitgeist (neither of which can quite handle US letter paper inside) but of comparable height, and it doesn’t have a dedicated laptop pocket.is this all TMI= too much information?

For: iPad Pro 11", 4th gen, in a slim case: PCSB (halcyon) - iPad fits in the front pocket. Zipper fully closes easily with room left in the pocket for a few small/slim items.
