    Parental Unit Design Updates!

    Hey everyone!

Tom has been musing on design updates to the Parental Unit diaper bag for the past several months, and our factory crew is about to make them real in the next production run (due date: early-mid April) of the bag. The design updates are inspired by feedback posted here on the Forums, shared with us by friends and family who use the P.U., and Tom’s observations of it in use.

    Interior Handles
The updated PU will have two simple 1” / 25mm webbing handles, just inside the zipper of the main compartment. These two handles give you an easy way to grab and move or carry the PU while its main compartment is zipped open. This is mostly to use while loading the Parental Unit, moving it from kitchen to nursery for example. Because the handles are sewn inside, they politely disappear when you zip the bag shut.

    Longer Main Compartment Zipper
Tom has extended the length of the main compartment zipper by over 4” / 100mm. This will not only make packing and unpacking your stuff easier, but allow a better view as you down into the depths of the bag. That main zipper now has two sliders as well.

    Snap Divider Becomes Zipper Divider
The main compartment divider will change from a snap closure to a zipper closure, much like the one in the front compartments of the Western Flyer and Tri-Star. This closure, as you may recall, joins the two interior pouches together to form a divider: if you choose to use it, the Parental Unit’s main compartment goes from one big expanse to four smaller divisions – depending on your packing style, it can be an nice option.

A Little Wider, A bit More Volume
The bottom of the original P.U. was about ~7.1” / 180mm thick; we pushed that out to ~7.9” / 200mm. This of course gives you a tiny bit more room (13.5 liters / 825 cu.in. as opposed to 13 liters / 795 cu.in.), and depending on what you pack and how you pack your P.U., it will now tend to stand upright better on its own.

Note: in updating the Parental Unit, we reviewed the original published dimensions and found they weren’t quite right... guess Tom was having an off day. We’ve now corrected the dimensions on the website. Just to confirm, the only change in dimensions is the small increase in thickness at the bottom of the bag. And the Parental Unit web page will be updated with the new design update information once the new batch of PUs are ready to go up on the website.
Have a question? @Darcy (to make sure I see it)

Wow! I love the thoughtfulness that goes into TB designs.

Will the interior handles double as loops for hooking over stroller handles?

They won't, but we are testing prototype attachments that would clip on the triangle/d-ring shoulder strap attachment points of the P.U. that would allow you to hang the bag on stroller handles (while the shoulder strap is still attached, even!)

If you, Cristina, or anyone else would like to test the prototype stroller/wheelchair handle attachments (note: you would need to have a current Parental Unit that can accept an Absolute or Standard Shoulder Strap with snaphooks and not the previous version of the P.U. that had toothed slides for straps w/out snaphooks) feel free to send me an email with your address and we'll mail em' out: [email protected]

Great! I have just watched the forum hacks videos so I have a new appreciation for double carabiners and key straps and the other wonderful attachments you make.

Thanks! I really REALLY can't wait for my first order to arrive. It contains pouches and key straps galore!

Yay! This is exciting. I've been wanting to replace our deep-pit-of-disorganization backpack diaper bag with a PU. Now I have a month and a half to woo my wife with my new TB bag arriving this week enough to convince her we need another awesome TB bag! :-D

Do it and don't look back! The PU is diaper bag #9 for us, and a year into kid #2 the bag just proves itself over and over again as the kids move through different stages (had ours since it first came out - 2 years ago? Our other diaper bags are now completely retired, of course). So curious to see the new design! Though admittedly skeptical that it can be improved upon - but if anyone can, it's these folks!

Yippee! I had returned an older PU because it was just a smidge small in the interior - these design updates sound promising. I like the sound of more volume and zippers instead of snaps. Thanks for the heads-up, Darcy!

You are quite welcome! I can safely say the design updates are as cool as they sound, having seen them myself. It's fun to work in an environment where people continually reflect on the work they've done with an eye towards refining it... and that's whether it's Tom or Nik refining a design or customer service or shipping improving procedures or Lisa and Fong working to make a bag more manufacturable.

It's actually one of our official internal company goals this year -- taking a look at the many major internal improvement projects we completed in 2016 and 1) Enjoying the efforts of our hard (and smart) work and 2) Looking for opportunities for refinement or improvement.

Is it going to be made in black anytime soon?

We'll make the next batch/new version of the PU with a black exterior -- estimated shipping date is early-to-mid April.

I love my new PU! I am using it as a knitting, life + everything else bag, and it's great for that.
The main compartment is reserved for knitting: two yarn stuff sacks with 4-inch-diameter yarn cakes in them, notebook, organizer pouch with knitting tools. All neatly side by side and not stacked on one another. I love that!

Front is for water bottle + glass + sunglass cases for easy access while driving or on the go.

The back compartment is for "life + everything", i. e. holds what I usually carry in my Side Kick: Planner, phone, pens, money, keys, small first aid kit in an organizer pouch, folded shopping bag.

Now one suggestion: If the back compartment did not have the dividers (or they were zippable like the one in the main compartment), I could just drop my Side Kick in there, still have access to everything and I would not have to re-pack. I carry my Side Kick around the house and when I walk the dog, I only take a bigger bag when I leave for longer. Dropping the Side Kick in to a bigger bag is very convenient for that – when I am back, I just take it out and am good to go again. I am contemplating taking the dividers out... )
