    Question about Reselling

    Hi guys. First of all I don't know if this is against the rules or not, and it might seem to be a stupid thing to suggest here, however I couldn't think of any other place.

    I purchased a Brain Bag backpack for my Macbook Pro late last year when I was starting Grad School, and since then I have hardly had reason to use it. Which is very disappointing since I paid so much money for it. I also purchased the Brain Cell which I use often when traveling.

    Is there any part of this forum where customers are allowed to try to resell their gear that they bought? I am interested in selling my Brain Bag for whatever I can get for it.

    Please advise me if this is possible.

    Hi Andy,

    It's not OK to sell your bags directly through this forum, but you're welcome to post (for example) a link to an eBay auction for the bag.

        Maybe: it's something we discuss. But probably not anytime soon -- we want to direct our energy towards making new bags and updating the Web site and don't have a lot of extra time to moderate and maintain a marketplace.

          I can back up Darcy here about the overhead to babysitting a forum, especially one which allows a buyer-seller section to exist.

          These are for sites where the owner is also not a retail seller. Spamming is a major headache as are liability issues for the site owner. If a you establish a quasi-marketplace you are almost required to maintain some level of vetting of buyers and sellers. There are also safety concerns. I cannot see it as something which would add to the forums here.

          Of course there is nothing preventing you from establishing a site with all of these things. Bigger things have come from much less modest goals.

          Craigslist is a decent venue to offer items as are some sites with forums such as laptop/tablet/slate PC sites, photography sites, backpacking sites...and who knows what other sites. Many of these do indeed have market place sub-forums. But be aware few have any vetting of buyers or sellers. As long as you stick to reasonable methods of handling your transactions such as PayPal, Google Checkout or money orders you should be fine. I would avoid checks as there is some potential for personal info to get back the the buyer. This is especially true if you cash the check at the buyer's bank where they record your DL # and potentially more info about you. This info eventually returns to the buyer and these days there are some less than, well, sane people out there...

          Just some thoughts based on my experiences of retailing and wholesale selling online over the past 10+ years.

            That's a lot of good information, grumpy3b, and exactly why we recommend sites like eBay: they can do the vetting that we can't, and we want you guys to be safe/happy.

              Pragmatically, too, if you live in / near a city with a craiglist presence, you're going to reach many more people that way. (And those of us who do live in such cities can get pretty spoiled by it, since -- geographical harshness -- most people simply don't.) eBay is not as fun an experience as buyer or seller, but has incredible scope.

              Non-secretly, I wish there was a buy/sell/trade subforum here, but the reasons listed above are more than sufficient to explain why there isn't.

                  I participate in about 20 COI's (forums). One of the best features of the Tom Bihn Forum is the no sell policy. However, a trading sub-forum as well as 'Pass-around' forum wouldn't be so bad as it would give us a chance to give unwanted TB stuff a loving home or for numerous people without access to the Seattle store, a chance to try and review bags.

                    None of my Tom Bihn stuff is unwanted; some items are more loved than others.

                    Getting past Zephyrnoid's heretical comments, I still wouldn't want to read a lot of forum discussion about this -- maybe if the transactions and details went on via private message exchanges this would be OK, but I bet you'd have a lot of people who wouldn't follow that policy.
