    New Ultrasuede Cafe Bag

Took a tour of Tom Bihn's factory in Seattle today, thanks to Darcy - escorted by Tom himself - thank you, Darcy! Thank you, Tom!

I highly recommend making arrangements to see it if you're in Seattle. If you're a sewer, just seeing all those industrials (each station set up for a specific purpose) can make your heart go pitter-patter with serious lust. Let me not mention the cutting table - if that fit in my living room I'd get one tomorrow.

Anyway, one of the perks of such a tour is the possibility of seeing a new item. This is the second time I've been so lucky; the first time I lucked out and saw the prototype Western Flyer.

There's a Ultrasuede Cafe Bag coming (Yes, Darcy gave me permission to tell everyone about it). The Ultrasuede is waterproofed on the outside, sueded side, with DWR coating, and also on the inside with a heavier coating like the other fabrics use. This is truly Seattle-rain-proof stuff, here. If you've had other non-animal suede items from other companies, and had to worry about getting it wet, forget the worries with this bag. The bag I saw was a Cocoa Ultrasuede with a Wasabi liner, and it was.... GORGEOUS.

It's hard not to pet fabric of this quality; it snuggles up to your hand and body just begging for attention. I don't have any colors to state; the Cocoa might not be a production color, Tom stated, but with fabric this nice it won't matter. The Wasabi was not Ultrasuede, by the way, just the outside Cocoa. No other changes were made to the bag.

If you've always wanted a Cafe Bag but wondered if the current fabrics would blend into your office or work environment, worry no more. This bag rocks!

Last, 3 Lifefactory Bottles and my Plum Field Journal! Plus a blue (natch) FOT. All bags decked out with Tom Bihn luggage tags .

The current fabrics do blend into an office or work environment, but if
you're unsure go with navy (the power color) or black cafe bag.

A mini-cafe bag in this material would be great.

Any chance of making the Ristretto with Ultrasuede?

It's unlikely. It's more likely that you will see the Mini Cafe Bag in Ultrasuede.

I've had the pleasure of using the Ultrasuede Cafe bag for over a week now. It's so luxuriously soft that it's hard to stop touching it. It feels nice against the side/hip. We were concerned that the Ultrasuede fabric might not have enough weight to help the bag keep its shape, especially if there were hard or pointy objects in the main compartment of the bag. That hasn't turned out to be a problem: the bag keeps its shape quite well.

I hope to take some sneak peak preview pictures soon (if Tom will let me!)
Have a question? @Darcy (to make sure I see it)

Any chance you'll be posting those pictures soon, Darcy? I'm really interested in a small Cafe Bag in Ultrasuede -- I've been thinking about getting a small Cafe bag for a while, but my boyfriend has one in Cordura and I'm sure he wouldn't be too keen on our having matching bags. The Ultrasuede might make it just different enough =) And it would be nice to see it the Mini Cafe also.

So I'll have to ask the irritating question -- when might we be seeing the Ultrasuede Cafe bags? (And what is the estimate on the Mini Cafe, while I'm at it?)

Somehow missed this thread previously but I am evidently holding off on a purchase... the Ultrasuede is tempting... and I'm trying to decide on a size.

Hopefully, the release will be soon!

                Ultrasuede bag questions

I watched the video on the Ultrasuede website. Looks really cool. I am planning my purchase of a Large Cafe bag and am now leaning toward Ultrasuede. What colors are going to be the Ultrasuede material? Is the current Cocoa/Wasabi combo in Ultrasuede? Will there be a Cocoa/Cayenne combo? I feel my Tom Bihn bag fever ramping up again! So much more fun than Malaria.

I am really excited for the Ultrasuede. I love the feel of suede. I'm also still really excited for the mini cafe bag!

                    Fabric Question

Is the Ultrasuede in the clear wallet the same material that will be used in making the Ultrasuede Large Cafe Bag? Will it have the same feel?

No, it's not the same. The Cafe Bag Ultrasuede is designed more for exterior use and while it still has that amazing Ultrasuede feel, it's more substantial.

                        Tnx and a follow-up question

Thank you Darcy. I do have an additional question: Is the current Cocoa/Wasabi bag (offered via the website) a Cordura bag or an Ultrasuede bag? I suspect the answer is Cordura, but I want to confirm that as I am gearing up my next purchase and read that the Ultrasuede will be in Cocoa. If it is not the Ultrasuede, when will Ultrasuede be available (ballpark, not specifically)?

No Cafe bags are available in Ultrasuede at this time, and I'm not sure when they will be: Tom is working on a different bag to be our first Ultrasuede bag, but details on that aren't available yet.
