Monolith- how much can the size be exceeded?

I like the monolith, but like lots of other bags, it's not the best dimensions for my machine.

My laptop is a Gateway 4530GZ/M320XL.
Dimensions are 12.9 x 10.6 x 1.1.

The Size 2 monolith seems way too big at 14.1 x 11.5 x 2.25. Seems like I'd be carrying around a lot of extra bulk that isn't necessary.

However, the size 4 monolith seems like it just about makes it, at 13.7 x 10 x 1.25.

The question is, can I squeeze in my 10.6" width laptop into the 10" width monolith? If so, would I loose any of the padding advantages? I'd really like a bag that "just fits" so as not to take up a lot of room in my small backpack.

Anyone is welcome to let me know what they think!

Hi Josh,

Happy new year! Sorry for the delay in responding to your post. Holiday, inventory, and a tough question.

Normally, I only suggest putting laptops that are up to about 10.4" across in the Size 4 Monolith. However, I stretched it out as much as I could and measured it and I think that it will hold your laptop. It should not reduce the protection by much. The laptop will remain suspended and cushioned. The only difference is that the very outer edges will not have the corrugated plastic covering them.

Just to update everyone-- I did purchase the larger size and used it for a bit. However, it was so large that I even had trouble fitting it into my largest backpack. There was room to fit extra stuff in there-- I could fit file folders, charger, etc, except it was awkward to carry around alone, cause it is so big. Also, I like to run with my laptop in my backpack (!), and it would bounce up and down in the case. Obviously, the protection was great otherwise.

I went ahead and ordered the smaller size, and yes, it fits, althoug it is a bit tight zippering closed and the edges do stick out a bit past the protection panels. However, I still feel like the protection is great, and everything is much more compact and solid. This fits in my backpack without a problem and is much easiery to carry around on its own. I am much happier with this setup, and Tom Bihn graciously accepted the larger bag for return.
