Help! What bags to use on upcoming trip?

A few days before Labor Day weekend, we will be flying direct to San Diego to a wedding happening in L.A the same day.

We cannot check anything as we have to jump from plane to rental car as fast as possible.

The problem is we have to fit dress clothes and casual ones for 2 in one bag.

The better half has already announced that he will be the last to board the plane so he can only carry a personal item.

I have to use a carryon size for both our dress and casual stuff.

One solution is to skip the husband bulky jacket and use a vest as dress up item (we are guests, not the wedding party and it is an afternoon wedding that doesn't seem to be formal)

    Tentative packing list is

    Him

dress vest, pant, shirt 1 or 2?, undershirt, socks, shoes and tie
casual swimsuit, tees, one pair of shorts, socks
    toiletry

    Her
    dress clothes
jacket, pants 1 or 2 pairs?, tees, socks, metal belt and necklace and shoes
Small Cafe Bag Storm Sapphire (it looks way better than the pseudo dress bags in cheap satin)

    casual clothes
2 or 3 tees, pants how much? long sleeve shirt (for sun protection) how much? 1 or 2? cardigans.
hat, sunglasses, Clear Quarter Cube with toiletry
shoes one pair that will be worn on plane
    night attire/thin slippers

Everything but the long sleeve shirt(s) can be rolled into a quart or gallon size ziplocks.

    I also have a backpack/packing cube and a shoulder bag/packing cube

Do you think all that is going to fit on my usual Cafe Bag/Brain Bag combo?

Better half is going to be carrying his small backpack or a Synapse if it is available by that time.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    what bag to use for

    Hi:

I would think the Aeronaut would work fine--if you used cubes. I find the cubes keep my dress clothes really unwrinkled..i use the bundle method and then put it in the cube. I do not have the Aeronaut, but most of my stuff has fit in the Western Flyer without a problem; but my sizes are also relatively small.

And why exactly will your partner not be carrying anything other than a personal item?!

My sizes are big, his clothes are size medium.

My husband wants to be the last on the plane, he doesn't like to fight crowds, which means if he ever carries anything else than a personal item it is going to be checked by him at the counter or gate checked as he board the last seat on the plane.

We do not have time to wait for checked baggages, we really have to fly out of the airplane and into the rental car bus.

Backpack...I have to ask....but...if the wedding is in L.A., why aren't you flying into L.A.?

Besides that, I doubt you will fit both of your clothes in one bag. So, here's a suggestion. Pack a larger bag and ship to your destination in L.A. via Fedex. This way the two of you can just carry personal items on board which means you can move quickly.

From where we are it is cheaper to fly to San Diego and the flight is direct.

Better half suggested just that, ship clothes to the hotel, I might just do that with our casual clothes since we just need the dress clothes right away.
