I am glad I stocked up on the WF. Best travel bag ever. It also fits under a plane seat and still allows room for your feet or something else like the CoPilot.

Packing cubes for Synik 30

The information was in my previous post, where I also stated that if you used a large packing Cube for A45 in the Synik 30, there is no room to insert the small packing Cube. These are the A30 packing cubes, and to identify all the accessories shown in a frame near the end of the video, I’ve annotated a screen capture:

Aeronaut 30 Large Packing Cube, Northwest Sky
12" / 305 mm x 12" / 305 mm x 4.1" / 105 mm
For information purposes, here are the dimensions of Aeronaut 45 Packing Cubes, so that you can check for yourself that putting the two cubes together exceeds the height of the Synik 30
Aeronaut 45 Large Packing Cube 13.4" / 340 mm x 13.4" / 340 mm x 4.3" / 110 mm
Aeronaut 45 Small Packing Cube 13.4" / 340 mm x 6.7" / 170 mm x 4.3" / 110 mm
Height of A30 Packing Cubes + depth of 3D Organizer Cube = 6” + 12” + 2” = 20”
Synik 30 dimensions: 13.4" (w) x 20" (h) x 8.0" - 10.8" (d) / 340mm (w) x 508mm (h) x 205 - 275mm (d)
Height of A45 Packing Cubes = 6.7” + 13.4” = 21.1” Already exceeds height of Synik 30 with no room for 3DOC on top
If you want to use an A45 Large Packing Cube, you’re probably better off putting the clothing in the rest of the space, or you might be able to use an underpacked A30 Small Packing Cube, or other smaller accessories like stuff sacks or a Snake Charmer. imagineez shows the A45 Large Packing Cube and a number of other accessories at the end of his first post in his Synik 30 Review: The New Pack for You? thread. (Scroll all the way down to find these: there are a lot of pictures). I’ve already given links to reviews by Cristina and bartleby showing packup configurations in the Synik 30 with the A30 packing cubes in my earlier post.
You can also substitute the large packing cube for A30 with two small packing cubes for A30, as Cristina does, if you want to use these in other bags and have more flexibility in configuring your packing among smaller or differently shaped bags. Or, you can stay with the large packing cube if it is better suited to large items. You can also get the Laundry packing cube version in either size if you want a partition that keeps clean and dirty clothes separated. The A30 packing cubes in the video on the Synik 30 product page were not the laundry version. (It’s possible to see this when they take the cubes out of the bag; the laundry variety has two zippers around the side instead of one, so that you can separately access the compartments for clean and dirty clothes.)

The only post in which I know all of this is clearly laid out is the one where I did a screen capture from the video and labeled every accessory that showed up in the video: for packed accessories on the left hand side of the Synik 30 Product Page

(Retired) Small Yeoman Duffel Aether Packing Cubes in Wasabi and Carbon shown with Small Shop Bag in Monarch Halcyon; depth and handles distinguish these packing cubes from others
This is how they fit into the Small Shop Bag
And how the cubes in Carbon, Violet, and Wasabi Aether were sized for the Small Yeoman Duffel
The original thread from which a few pictures were extracted is my thread, The New Yeoman Duffel Aether Packing Cubes from 07-20-2017. Alternative packups of the bags with other packing cubes and accessory combinations were also shown there. It would be nice if the Small Western Flyer Packing Cubes mentioned and shown there were still recognizable in later references --- even though they are now dubbed Packing Cubes for the Synik 30, and might no longer be recognizable by new forum members who join after they change its name.

I particularly liked the violet and carbon aether, and was hoping more colors would come out. I never got the Yeoman Duffel cubes, but I have a few Western Flyer ones (the smalls, particularly) and A30 cubes, that seem adaptable to a range of situations.----

MikeV I have a feeling if people pass it by they're thinking it's too small but, for me (6'2" biz travel), it's awesome ... with a few tweaks (space in the front pockets, better shoulder straps) it'd be darn near perfect.

I see there have been a few subtle updates since then (lockable sliders, replacing the clips for the discontinued Brain Cell with hooks for a Cache) but other than that, it's still the same bag. Which should tell you something. As GrussGott wrote, maybe update the shoulder straps and I'm sure there's some life left in it.

MikeV please ask Tom to consider tweaking before retiring.

It's neat to see TB releasing new products, and I'm sure the Bummer will sell well, but I do miss some of the older bags, especially the travel and organization bags. (So thrilled about the Road Buddy re-release! Def got in a preorder for that one.) I've been waiting a long time for an organizational crossbody bag somewhere in size between the SK and Daylight Briefcase, but so far there's only been a flood of packs and waist bags. Still hoping though!

Oh man, bummer. I have been waiting for a Halcyon WF forever. I hoped the new bag design that got shelved (tri-something?) would be a sleeker version, without the awkward front pockets or basically useless water bottle slot. Also hoped for a smidge more space. The Tri-Star is just ever-so-slightly too bulky to pass as a personal item on a plane.

Bummer... I missed the Night Walk DLBP again because of work meetings. It's no fun going 9am-6pm straight with just a single 15 minute lunch break! But, as I said last time: I didn't really NEED a DLBP anyway. Better that I save my money for a different bag. Now that we're back to the office (just 2 days/week for me) and I'm supposed to pick up a new work laptop this week, I might want a different shoulder back for my commute. I might also decide to offer up one of my less-used bags in a trade. Hmm... what do I have that might be of interest . . . .
