    All Ballistic Nylon Exterior Bags

After the disconcerting loss of my Imago to mercury contamination (it was declared hazmat) I reflected on what makes that bag so endearing. It was in part the all ballistic nylon exterior of the bag. My lost (but not forgotten) bag was in Steel/Steel/Cayenne (a combo no longer offered) and was all Ballistic on the outside with the magnificent cayenne lining on the inside. What a treasure! What a loss!

In my reflection, I realized that one of the things that really appealed to me about that bag was the all ballistic exterior. I have a Super Ego, and while a great bag, my preference was to use my Imago when I could. After ruminating on the matter I realized I am drawn to the all ballistic exterior design, preferably in one solid color. That Steel was magnificent, it shined, it shimmered, it danced with sunlight. I miss my friend. To those uninitiated to the Bags of Tom there is little chance they will get this. The initiated feel my pain.

But onto the matter of this post. I would like to see more Tom Bihn bags offered in all-ballistic exteriors. I would also like to see the classic Steel/Steel/Cayenne Imago return to the line. What a bag, what a design! This was a bag that would have been properly displayed at MOMA. I have lost a precious work of art. It still stings.

The only solution is to buy another Tom Bihn bag of course. Vacillating back and forth between the Zephyr and the Empire Builder, it dawned on me that my Imago's all ballistic exterior was an element that I was longing for. The Co-Pilot is smaller than the Imago but does have the all Ballistic exterior. I would love to grab one up in Crimson to match my Aeronaut. Any available or coming back in Crimson?

But perhaps a new bag design may be in the offing? Perhaps an update of the Imago? I noticed that the great Imago isn't offered in as many varieties as once it was and wonder if it is heading toward the discontinued file. If a new bag is on its way, one that will take the Imago's niche, I hope it is offered in an all ballistic exterior option, particularly Steel. I miss that Steel. Wow, I really miss that bag.
Bags: Latest: Pop Tote and Shop Bag (large) ; also have a Co-Pilot, Super Ego (w/cork seatbelt); Aeronaut; Medium Cafe Bag; Large Cafe Bag; Brain Cell; Shop Bag small, (Steel); Packing Cube Shoulder Bag. Accessories: Oh yeah, bunches.
Sadly Lost to Hazmat: An Imago in Steel/Cork & MCB in Linen/Olive.

First of all, wow. You sure do lose things in style. How many other people can say they lost a cherished possession to hazmat? That is an ending fit for a truly excellent bag.

I sympathize with your loss. I know what you are going through; some of my favorite, irreplaceable items have gone into oblivion. It's the pits. You grieve for them, and few other other people understand what you are feeling.

I have my fingers crossed that either your favorite combination returns or that it is replaced by something which suits you even better.

Wow! I'm sorry for your loss! That seems like a really devastating way to lose a possession, and I thought accidentally spilling bleach on my favorite T-Shirt was sad . You could almost make a movie out of it. I'm imagining tears as the mean man in the hazmat suit rips your beloved Imago from your hands.

In any case, the Empire Builder and Zephyr are great (virtually identical) bags. We do have a few Zephyrs left in the Black/Crimson/Steel combination which will help you get your crimson fix. I would imagine that it would be easier to switch from an Imago to a Zephyr as there isn't as large of a size difference as there is between the Imago and the Empire Builder. I assume that if you plan on carrying the same items as you were in the Imago, that the Zephyr would be the better fit for you.

Perhaps as an homage to your former Steel/Steel/Cayenne Imago (RIP) you could go with a Steel (Ballistic)/Cork/Wasabi combination. I swoon every time I walk past it in the warehouse. It's absolutely stunning!

Hi, ex. Long time no see.

Condolences for your loss. How did it happen? (Lab accident? Broken newfangled light bulb?) What happened to the contents of the bag? Did other people lose their stuff too?

I also like the ballistic fabric best—smooth, shimmery, and cat-hair-free.

Back in school, a long time ago, the chemistry teacher used to pour sow mercury out on the bench so we could see it better, and we didn't die or grow two heads or anything. Oh how precious we have become!

And no, before you ask, that's not how I became a Crip!

Hi gmanedit! The culprit was a leaking sphygmomanometer (blood pressure machine.) I had to hazmat many of the contents as well. This included the expense of replacing textbooks. It was a huge disaster. I had Hg in the house too. As I was taking things in and out, it was flinging Hg around. What a clean-up! I only noticed the trouble when I was on campus. Just a mess. I was the only person who lost stuff due to it though.

It wasn't until I researched it that I learned how hazardous Hg is. It's main threat is via inhalation over time. That is why it is important to get rid of the stuff. You can read about the surprising toxicity here. The article that best delivers a comprehensive overview of the information is a transcript of a speech here.

Thank you, Katy. It's a comfort to know there are others who understand the loss. I have considered the Imago with Cork, but upon reflection and careful review (over three hours examining lining colors), I have ordered a Co-Pilot in Steel/Ultraviolet. I will have once more the beauty of a Ballistic Steel bag and I will have a first hand look at the Ultraviolet Dyneema, which seems to be a nice balance between a bright lining and won't show marks readily (pens, etc.) My intention is to use it as my Every Day Carry. I am real excited about my order! Yay Tom Bihn!

Another vote for ballistic nylon exteriors. I love love LOVE all my Packing Cube Shoulder Bags (yes, I have them in ALL COLORS, even the Solar yellow back from ages ago!). What I would give to see a ballistic nylon Western Flyer. OMG I would die of happiness!! :-)

I think part of the reason I like the idea is because they're so lightweight yet so rugged.

Lani, are you referring to Dyneema exteriors? It would seem so from the context of your remarks (Packing Cube Shoulder Bags, light weight material, and Solar Yellow), and the fact that the Western Flyer is currently made in Ballistic Nylon. It is not made in Dyneema, and only a few bags, like the Synapse backpack and the Co-Pilot, have been offered in Dyneema.
