I hope you'll indulge me in a brief hijack: if any of you who are upgrading have an old MacBook 11" or 13" in good shape, my college age daughter really wants to buy one. She's poor, I've got to pay her gigantic tuition bill, so pm me if you have a lead on a good deal. Thanks!

I'm not sure what to do - I'm using an almost 5 year old MacBook (I know, ancient in computer years), but would probably use a new iPad more. Actually, the only thing I use the MacBook for is for music storage and occasional bill paying (photos are stored on duplicate external hard drives). Since I just updated it to Lion, and it's running fine, I will probably wait until later in the year, and go ahead and get the new iPad. There, sometimes it just helps to write it out!

Based on my experience with multiple Macs (including a first run titanium PowerBook), I recommend waiting a few months and not buying the first batch of new machines. On several occasions I've gotten first run machines because the new edition was released in the time between my order placement and order fulfillment (back in the pre-hype apple days). Each of those machines needed hardware service within the first year. None of my other Macs have required service within the first couple of years.

I can't afford to get a new MBP because I'm too busy ordering Tom Bihn bags (steel/solar dyneema synapse) and packing cubes (I believe UPS will see me on the 18th with them!)
I'm actually quite happy with my 2 yr old MBP and don't see a reason yet to upgrade. In fact there are some changes that I'm not particularly fond of (lack of cd/dvd drive, hard drive while "better" is still too expensive and not enough storage - to get around all of this you have to buy / manage extra peripherals) I'd be interested though to see the display as compared to my current display to see if it really lives up to all the hype!

I'm still on the fence as to switch from my Win7 computer to a MBP. I build my own computers and it allows me to save a bunch and get a lot of use out of the parts. I do like the idea of a MBP with a dual boot with Win7 but to be honest I'm not sure I'd get much use out of the OS X side. But I might be able to dabble a bit with the tools found in OS X to expand my skill set.

I've updated the first post in this thread with pre-order information for the new sizes of Brain Cell and Cache. You can also get the scoop on the blog.

I am thinking about one too.
I have too many now though as it is(if possible?) and I also never buy something so new until they get the bugs worked out.
I already have a tough time seeing the screen on my 17" with the resolution so high and wonder if it will be even worse for me with the Retina?
We don't all have the eyes of a young whippersnapper anymore!
And for the record "Whippersnapper" seems to be in the computers vocabulary too!

apple store is back online! but check with your local store if you're considering one of the standard configurations and ask when they will have it. i am waiting to hear back from my apple store to see if they'll have them today...

I wish I could justify it. However, I'm no longer sad that my department said I can't have a MBA--the new MBP will console me, I'm sure.

The size of the padded laptop compartment inside of the Buzz and the 15" MacBook Pro Checkpoint Flyer Case won't be updated -- both will continue to provide a great fit for the 15" MacBook Pro and 15" MacBook Pro Retina.Last edited by Darcy; 08-02-2012, 04:22 PM.
