Why no handle on the Imago?

It's a great bag, but a handle would make it easier for me to carry as I am often carrying an Empire Builder on my shoulder.

Also, I would like to see the outside pockets get a little wider (I guess this would require making the bag a little deeper), since my video iPod in its case barely fits...

    Agree ...

I understand about the constraining factors of "clean lines" and additional expense .... but, when traveling, a handle - of almost any type - would be incredibly useful for simply grabbing the bag for movement. I could see an aeronaut style handle as an excellent compromise. Please .... I'll even be willing to be your guinea pig, and am willing to pay for the privilege, it's that big a deal to me ...

I third that. A handle would be useful.

Wouldn't it be kinda funny looking the way the flap is? Most of the bags with handles, the bag opens across the top and the handles are on either side, if there's a flap it's down the site. On the imago the handle would have to be part of the flap. Maybe a small handle like on a cafe bag? I think they have posted somewhere why they didn't put a handle on, but I might be confused.

renegadeot is on the right track.

The way the Imago is right now, there's no place to put the handle. Usually a handle is sewn into a seam, and as you can see on your Imago, there's no seam on the flap where that would make sense. A handle would kindof float around up there and look weird.

That said, Tom is working on coming up with a solution for this, but I can't say how long it will take. Be warned that it may change the look/price of the Imago.
Have a question? @Darcy (to make sure I see it)

Current carry: testing new potential materials in the form of Original Large Shop Bags.

Vetoing the handle. I never use the handles on the top of the smaller bags, I just grab the strap and wrap it around my fist if I need to snag the bag in a hurry. The large cafe bag is approximately the same size as the Imago, if you need a bag with a handle.

I dunno about the handle on the imago either. I think of it as a different kind of bag. The kind of bag that needs a handle is the large mobile office type bag that your going to be going from site to site that has all my stuff that I'm constantly getting in and out of the bag like the Empire builder or Super Ego.

I think of the cafe bags and the imago as the smaller simpler ones, that I might throw stuff into for class or to go to a friends, that I just need them to get me from one place, then back.

I guess the ID and the Ego are the middle of the road ones for when you don't need a large bag, but still need some of the features of the office bag.

I really like the Imago, someday I'd like to loan my current one to a buddie as an excuse to get a newer one in a different color

Edit: looking at the OP, the poster HAS an one of the big office bags and is using the Imago at the same time, so my comments probably don't help much

Oh, I agree that the Imago is not big enough to need a handle, but it would be convenient.

Just got my Imago and I think it's great

I don't really think that the Imago needs a handle, but if there's going to be one in future Imagos, I think a folding/retractable handle would fit inside the pocket on the rear. It'd have to have some kind of rigid backing though, with a handle on only one side. Or, have a handle replacing/on one of the exterior pockets and carry it vertically.

I think the real issue is with the exterior pockets, they're just too small! Maybe use some kind of stretchy neoprene material for future versions?

                        Imago handle--pretty please?

                        Darcy and Tom:

I want to second what has been said about a handle for the Imago. Please make a version with a handle.

It needn't be more than the handle on the cafe bags--they are useful, and still discrete.

Darcy, I beg you for this every couple of months. That, and a return of the basic black color.

The price isn't a problem, but how drastic would the change of the look be? I really like the new Imago, it's the biggest competitor the Ego that I want to get for school next semester (yeah I know I already have an Imago, but I really like the other colors).

Just got my Imago and absolutely love it -- but it really needs a little handle. I am a suburban creature -- I am in and out of the car all day long. All I need is a little grab handle, just enough to get it from here to there; from the car to in the house/coffee shop/office etc. Even carrying in from room to room in the house.

I think that you could extend the waist strap and use a small C-clip to keep each side of the waist strap attached to corresponding side of the main strap and close to the edge of the bag.

I think it could be used as an handle that way but...

Experiment with the idea first and while the bag is not holding precious gear.
