Good point about needing to be careful with ironing to avoid melting anything with nylon or other synthetics, kansha! I'll let my wife know about using single-knit fabric with spandex.

Yes, Cristina, I think that's probably what was happening for me as well, since we are in Canada. It must be restricted to US addresses.

Thanks @Lixpdx - hard to tell from the photo but it does look like it may be softer than the typical 1/8" round elastic cord that we've been able to find at the fabric store. I'll pass that along to my wife and see what she thinks about it.

Most fabric stores in my area are also taking orders over the phone and having it available for pickup, so even if you aren’t a fan of going into your store it can’t hurt to call and ask what they have on hand that they’re recommending for making masks.

Thanks ClicketySnap - my wife has looked at the 1/8" elastic in the local fabric store but isn't happy with it for earloops. Some of the masks (not the Tom Bihn ones) use that type and they're nowhere near as comfortable as the earloops on the TB masks.

Thanks Darcy - I'll let her know. So it would need to be cut into strips, is that correct?

Beware of T shirt yarn. It's often cotton, and while it's soft and rolls or curls toward the center so it looks similar, it's not stretchy so it doesn't function the same.

    Hi Rob_L,

The people who were talking about T-shirt yarn were referring to the fact that you can find YouTube videos on how to make this from T-shirts. When you cut and stretch the fabric segments, they curl up to provide a comfortable alternative to elastic. If I were trying to buy something like this, I’d probably look for an Etsy store that sells products under a search term like “t-shirt yarn for masks”.

Here’s a sample result from an Etsy store:
3mm 1/8" Soft Elastic Mask Handmade Strap White Earloop Cord Ear Tie Rope String for Mask Sewing

If you look at the images on the left side of the page, there’s a video that shows the different color cords for earloops and a demo of their texture when stretched.

Alternatively, you can try sending a query to Customer Support.

I did see the link to the t-shirt yarn, but it's apparently no longer available. I tried searching the forum but haven't hit on the right combination of search terms to narrow down the posts enough - the few that looked promising so far didn't offer any clues to the source of the elastic, and the majority of results returned had nothing to do with masks. I will try sifting through the later parts of the thread on making surgical-style mask to see if there's anything about the ear loops.

Rob, when I put it in my Amazon cart, it shows available and would be delivered (to Colorado) by this Friday. So strange that it showed unavailable to you.
