    the leica d-lux 4

i have a nikon d700 digital slr with a nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. this is a prosumer camera body with a professional lens. i have produced beautiful pictures with this set up. i was a long time canon user and switch from the canon 5d to the nikon d700 last december.

i also have a leica d-lux 4 point and shoot. without a doubt, you cannot make the same images with this that you can with the d700 + 24-70mm f/2.8. but it is a great camera when you want to carry something small, and it has produced some pretty nice pictures for me. most of the pictures and many of the videos that i have posted on this forum since last december were taken with the leica d-lux 4.

we were at lake fairfax park over the weekend. my cousin is a professional photographer, and his wife is used to pictures being taken with professional digital slr. i wanted to get some family pictures for them and their 9 month old, and she commented, looking at the leica d-lux 4 in my hand and trying not to laugh: with that? my cousin said to her: honey, that's a leica.

i took some pictures and they saw them on monday. the comment from my cousin's wife after seeing the pictures: who would have thought that such a little camera could take such good pics

the leica d-lux 4 can be carried inside the side effect, allowing you to quickly get to it when you see something special and want to capture it.

    Nikon DSLR and Canon DSLR

I used to be a Nikon film shooter, but when I went digital, Nikon's DSLR offerings were not nearly as good as Canon's. Nikon has caught up in the last 2 years and have some really great cameras, but I'm sticking with Canon now. It's too expensive to keep changing systems. They both play catch up with each other, anyway.

      Maverick:

I notice in your recent video that you also have a Canon digital point/shoot now...did this replace your Leica? How do you like it in comparison? I am in the market for a pocket P&S camera that is decent and can take video as well. Thanks.

        hi bltkmt!

all of the pictures you've recently seen from me on these forums were taken by the canon s90.

i switched from the leica d-lux 4 to the canon s90 because the latter does better at higher iso settings. it's also a little more compact.

i prefer the user interface and the colors i get out of the leica, and i'm excited to see them come out with the d-lux 5 (not sure when that will be, but panasonic has announced the lx-5, and the d-lux series from leica has paralleled the lx-series from panasonic).

canon has also announced the s95, an updated version of the s90.

Thanks. I am looking at the s95 - it seems to have addressed many of the user complaints of the s90. Although, the S90 is cheaper and still a great camera (so I hear)...decisions, decisions...

          Thanks for the input.

Yea, it may look like a toy but the Leica label makes most camera folk twitch.

With the Canon S95 out now, you can get the S90 for less than $300...tough decision.
