    Netbook purchased

    Thanks to all who posted on my search for a netbook. It ended with a ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA but the drama continues.

    In the end my better half decided a netbook would be useful to her so instead of waiting on me she bought it. Normally this wouldn't be bad but now there is a strict rule against linux on the netbook. But our main issue now is whether or not it's defective. From the start it had issues booting up but a disk check fixed that. Still, it has flaked out a few times so we might see about sending it back.

    Other than that it seems decent. I'm not sure why ASUS divided the hard drive like they did but everything else seems fine.

    Issues...

    I'm wondering if you did a flat-install once you received the new netbook? I find that I 99% of the time am able to mitigate most of my computing challenges by performing a clean OS wipe when first using a new unit.

      This is esssentially the correct procedure. You can drive yourself nuts trying to flesh out some irritating problem.

      However, since the Netbook is a new purchase, I would send it back rather than spending the time reloading the OS. There could be a flaky component causing your problems.

      The hard drive is probably partioned to provide a recovery area. Very useful if your machine gets messed up. Disadvantage is that you would have to reload all installed apps that didn't come with the system and OS updates. Separate image software helps to keep an image of your current system. There is also the Setting and Files transfer wizard which can be used to keep an updated copy of documents and app settings. This applys to XP.

        Netbooks and 7...

        Not sure if this topic has lost steam, or if anyone is still interested:

        Just installed Windows 7 (RTM Build) on my Hp Mini 1100. I went with the Home Premium version (lowest tier that includes Aero Glass.)

        I was shocked at how smooth and stable it is. Beautiful performance on such lite specs.

        32 bit version of Windows 7, 2gb Ram on the machine with a 16gb SSD Class 6 Hard drive.

          I plan to install Windows 7 on my Dell Mini 9 - 2 gig memory 16 gig SSD.

          I carry the Netbook in my new ID bag. I went for the 6T brain cell. The Mini 9 fits vertically and the power supply, Passport 320gig drive and mouse fit down the space available in the side of the brain cell.

            10 inch...

            BPrichard,

            I was just wondering if it appears a 10 inch netbook would also work with the size 6?? I think you are only gaining width with the extra screen size.

              I think so. I based the size of the brain cell on the selection list that showed the Dell Mini 12. Figured it would give me room if I went with a larger screen.

              By the way. I'm not installing Win 7 on the mini 9. Won't really give me any more features than I need. XP is fine for what I use the netbook for.

              I'll probably upgrade to a 10" screen and Win 7 when they become available.

              A 10" screen is plenty for a netbook. Any larger and you might as well get a 12" laptop.

                Thank you for the reply and the insight. For my wife's HP Mini 110 needs... the newly announced Ristretto Mini may fit her needs.

                In regards to Win7.... I have tried both (xp w/ sp3, and 7 RTM) on the same hardware (w/ 2gb ram). I was purposefully skeptical, but 7's process and memory management are far better. I know it seems redundant on netbook hardware, but if you are running 2 gigs ram, you will appreciate the boom.
