It is indeed possible - even if it took me nearly all day of playing to figure it out.
You need to stay several moves ahead of the cat - work every other spot on the edge/edges that the cat is headed for. Don't try to work the spots near the cat until it gets to the edge. Then you can fill in the alternate spots.
