    Portable Hard Drive Recommendations

    Hello,

I am in the market for a portable hard drive that has a small form factor. I've seen some of Mav's videos and I know he has a couple of drives that have the sort of small form factor. I'm going to be getting one of the new Macbook Air's, and I know that I will want to have an external hard drive to hold some of my files and do time machine backups. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Zach

    misterN,

The tasks you are describing are not very demanding and almost any drive would suit your needs.

I have one of these http://g-technology.com/products/g-drive-mini.cfm

I love it because it will run bus power on either FW800 or USB and it is a 7200 RPM drive, so it is high performance. I have sample libraries on it so I need better access speed.

It may be overkill for what you are describing.

I have an earlier version of the drive in jeffmac's post (and also its big brother). These are terrific drives.

When I bought my Macbook Air, I also wanted a small drive for backups (in my case SuperSuper! clones) and extra storage. I decided to get http://g-technology.com/products/g-drive-mobile-usb.cfm It's only USB (not an issue for the MBA), light and quiet. And it fits perfectly in my FOT pouch

I have a couple of the Western Digital drives including this one which is now available in usb 3.0 if needed. Been very happy with them as they are super small and pretty reasonable for the price.

I just picked up one of these for my new 13" MBP with 1 TeraByte onboard.
I am surprised by how tiny it is and lets just say I do not have to worry about it getting smashed which seems to be a bad habit of mine.
I have always had good luck from Lacie.
