What are you listening to this summer?

Okay, I know I'm lame and never made the summer road trip play list I've been promising for like a year. I think part of it has to do with the fact that the most exotic place I'll be going this summer is Wisconsin.

Nevertheless, summertime still brings with it an opportunity to enjoy listening to some music, and I was wondering what you all are listening to. New stuff, old stuff--stuff that's not new but new to you?

According to iTunes, here's what I've been returning to so far this summer:

    1. Radical Face, The Family Tree Vol. 1: The Roots [Deluxe Edition]. This is seriously one of the best things I've ever heard (his other album is amazing, too). The guy is a genius, and he records all his songs in his mom's shed. I got this at the tail end of April, and it's destined to be my most-played album of 2012. Best of all is that Vols. 2 and 3 are still to come.

    2. Matthew and the Atlas, To the North. Whenever I think about "I Will Remain", I want to listen to it. Listening to it now.

    3. This Will Destroy You, This Will Destroy You. I think this is sort of coincidental, because I was using "The Mighty Rio Grande" as background music for a writing presentation I did earlier this week. Because I am awesome.

    4. An Horse, Walls. This was one of my faves last summer, too. So, um, the lyrics are a little repetitive, but if you did undergrad in the PNW in the late 90s or early 2000s, you will love the college radio-esque thing they've got going on. And they're Australian! Come on!

    5. Katie Costello, Follow Your Every Beat [EP]. I'm kind of embarrassed about this one, because she seems a little sophomore year in college (which would make sense, since she's like 20), but I guess not embarrassed enough to not play it over and over.

Awesome, you checked them out! I told you: so good. (Not that I thought you wouldn't believe me--I'm just excited.)

Warning: "Ghost Towns" by Radical Face has the same effect.

Also I am about 2 weeks from my Summer driving cars around the country for clients time.... so I am loading iPods with Books for the road.

I get so into them most of the time that if I haven't finished one when the trips are done I have to drive around at home until they are done.
Listening in the house just doesn't cut it for me?

Since I'm relatively old (50, gasp!), and have been hitting the concerts pretty hard recently, I've been pulling out some old stuff. Today, it's nothing but Hot Tuna. A bunch of us went to see them last night at the Count Basie Theatre, arguably one of the best places to hear live music. It was, without a doubt, one of the best shows I've been to in years. Jorma and Jack are AWESOME. These 71 and 68 year olds put most much younger players to shame, as you can see from this video I shot last night:

Hmm, now I might have to pull out some of my old Hot Tuna recordings and have another listen. It's been a while.

I feel like I've just been carded or something.

(Which actually happened to me twice on Wednesday. Twice.)

Oh, man. Yeah. It's kind of like working retail over the holidays. The year after college, I worked in a furniture/kitchen store; to this day, I cannot hear "Santa Baby" without throwing up in my mouth a little. Not that that reaction is bad, necessarily.

Sounds like the reaction of the protagonist in "About a Boy" (the Nick Hornsby novel made into a movie, with the lead character, played by Hugh Grant, living off the royalties from his father's hit Christmas song, "Santa's Super Sleigh" and having to listen to it everywhere all through the holidays.)
