Winter Packing List for A30 + SCB for 5+ days socializing, hiking, running

The list, links, and photos below are for my first time with winter packing in my A30 and SCB. This list is for an upcoming 5+ day road trip to visit family over the holidays. I am not being particularly efficient packing this time around (not doing laundry in the middle!). I have plans for some diverse activities including a nice dinner out (parents’ anniversary), some hiking, and some running, so I even have more than 5 outfits and more shoes than I would normally take for this length trip. I was just curious how much I could fit and how to arrange the packing cubes etc. Since I've gotten so many useful travel tips from these forums, I thought I'd return the favor and post links, but feel free to ignore as this is probably WAY too much information. This list is a lead up to my 4 country European trip this summer, where I’ll be gone for 3 weeks and have winter, spring and summer weather to contend with. This decidedly overstuffed round is making me very pessimistic about fitting everything in just the A30 this summer, but hopefully some lighter weight spring clothing will help. The A30 is proving to be very TARDIS like! Anyway, here it goes:

    Winter packing list:

Thank you for the incredibly detailed packing list and for including all the links! Great packing job too. I am intrigued by the Tailwind fuel as an alternative to gels.

I learned about Tailwind from the ultra community. I typically use it on runs of more than about 10 miles. It is much more mild flavored than Gatorade (and not nearly so sweet) and has enough electrolytes and fuel that you could theoretically use it alone to fuel a long race from start to finish. You can dilute it to whatever strength and just fill the whole hydration bladder with it. I still prefer some solid food (pretzels, peanut butter, cheese crackers), but in longer races where your stomach can go south pretty quickly, I find that gels and even Shot Bloks are not too palatable. Wish I could say I've been using it a lot this fall, but with my injuries, I haven't been able to run anything that requires any fuel.

Great packing list!!! What was your final weight for each bag?

The weights of the two main bags are listed above (hard to see given all the other stuff!). The A30 was 18.5 lbs and the SCB was 4.5 lbs. Not the lightest, but manageable for this road trip for sure. The goal for the summer is to get the outerwear and electronics into the A30 as well and not to increase the overall weight. I think that is going to be tough!

Thank you! I'm a newer forum member and packing posts with photos are my favorite. I'm planning on purchasing an A30 soon and start some test packing, so this post is right up my alley.

Welcome mcpdx! I've only been on the forums for about 9 months myself. Stick around and you'll learn a lot! A bunch of things on my list are directly related to hanging around here. [emoji3]

I love the Chico foldable backpack! Made from recycled materials. Fits a ton of stuff for the day. Good straps and double stretch materials side pockets, making it reachable access for water bottle on the go!

Really love your post, thanks a lot for sharing; pictures and links are great and helpful, always happy to see s "girl" minimalist packing list
A question though: while travelling through Europe, what shoes are you planning to wear while sight seeing? (assuming you will also do a bit of that, although you are also a trailer/runner/mountainer).
All the dresses/skirts are obviously worn best with the flats, but would you also wear them with your vivobarefoot boots for instance? Sorry for the precise question, but I always struggle packing shoes.
Other question: what about your choice of packing many small/medium size packing cubes Versus 2 bigger one?

                        Many thanks!

Thanks melhoune! So I am back from Europe (still need to reply to my post on that!) but the real winners were the boots at least for the time I was there. The weather was cool and rainy in all the places we were (UK, France, Switzerland, and Iceland) --we maybe had 3 days of truly sunny weather in 3 weeks! I did wear my Vivobarefoot Primal sneakers maybe twice and my dressier silver Soft Star Sport Ballerines 3 or 4 times, but the Vivobarefoot boots got me through rainy London and Paris with my skorts and dresses (and merino tights since it was so cool!), and hiking in the Alps and Iceland including several 30,000 step days (managed a few of those both in my city sightseeing and hiking)! YMMV but those boots are coming on all of my non-hot weather trips in the future. I wore them almost every day and was very happy with them!

To respond to your question about packing cubes, using the smaller cubes was really based on what I had in my arsenal , but I found it useful both on my winter trip and my European trip to have smaller cubes to organize my daily "outfits", though that worked perhaps a bit better for the trip where I wasn't hand washing and remixing clothing every couple of days.
