    Security Scarves

I'm considering getting a security scarf for an upcoming trip. You know the kind--an infinity type of scarf that has a pocket for credit cards, passport, etc. I know that several companies make them, including Travelsmith. Has anyone used this type of scarf, and if so, how did it perform? Would you use it again?

I have. Mine are called Sholdit and the pocket is great. I have lightweight fabric one and a fleece one. They are really useful if you are travelling carry-on only as everything you need need is in the scarf. I put my ID/Passport, phone, (earphones sometimes) small wallet, pen, gum, lipgloss and kleenex or hankie. I just take off my scarf at security and put it in the tray. I also wear it walking around town if I want to go hands free. Yes, I will use it again as they are functional, look nice and keep my neck warm.

I also have a Sholdit, which I haven't yet used for travel but plan to. It's not quite as discreet as I thought it would be (the pocket part of the scarf is bulkier than the rest, even with nothing in it), but I used it recently to hold ID, credit card, car key, and house key when I didn't feel like carrying a purse, and it was pretty convenient. I wore it doubled up and I kept having to adjust it to keep it comfortable, but that wasn't a deal breaker. For travel, I plan to use it on the plane to hold my iPhone or iPod and earbuds (which I'll use during the flight), and probably my wallet (so I don't have to worry about my valuables if I get up to use the bathroom, for example).

Ha! I totally read the title as security scarves like security blankets: smaller textiles to calm grownups during travels.

Glad to read the feedback on what we're actually talking about though. I've seen the Sholdit, but it seemed a bit impractical to me, without getting/hearing hands-on experience.

Well, actually, that's what they are--giving you that sense of security that your pocket won't be picked.

Oh, that is disappointing to hear--it is advertised as a safe place for valuables, but if the security pocket is pretty obvious, it is of so-so value....

As an alternative to a scarf, I just purchased a waist runners belt called "Stashbandz" from Amazon. Unlike other money belts this is a flat spandex band with no bulk whatsoever. There are also other similar belts from different companies on Amazon. I honestly thought it might be uncomfortable or tight but I have to say I am really pleased with it. It is extremely soft, not tight at all and I almost forgot I had it on. I bought it to hold my passport so as not to leave it in a hotel room. I know there are differing opinions on that but having it with me (but not in a purse) feels like the best option for me personally. I took it for a test walk holding my passport and iphone and everything felt very secure. The only drawback may be wearing it in hot climates, otherwise I believe this is going to work out great.

I'd argue that because most people don't expect to find a pocket or pouch embedded in a person's scarf, unlikely to be the target of pickpockets or the like. I think it's still significantly more secure than a purse. Also, my boyfriend said he didn't notice the pocket/bulk, so maybe it was more noticeable to me because it was on my body. To keep from drawing attention to the zippered compartment, I would take out excess if possible (i.e. leave unneeded keys at home, take cards/cash out of my bulkier wallet), but I'd still feel very comfortable using it to hold valuables while traveling.

This is such a neat idea, I'd never heard of it before. I ordered one from an Etsy shop and one from Amazon to compare. I recently sewed a couple of my regular scarves into infinity scarves, which makes me wonder if it wouldn't be relatively easy to add your own pocket to a scarf? Once I see how they're set up I might try it.

Just dropped in to say: our friends over at Beers & Beans make travel infinity scarves. They're good folks and the scarves are made in USA in their studio.
Have a question? @Darcy (to make sure I see it)

I've been thinking about the one in the Magellan catalog for forever, but the price was higher than I wanted to pay. I never even thought of looking on Etsy until you just posted that!

I have one for myself and one for my mother on the way, in fabrics I like better than the Magellan one.

OMG, there's an "add-a-flask" option! WHY didn't I have this for the times I've traveled with students? :-)

I'm tall, and found the Sholdits to be too short.

I like the Etsy ones much better than the ones at Travelsmith (much more variety in colors and fabric weight), but they are pretty pricey. I'm short, so the Sholdit would probably work for me. Will have to mull over it a while. I checked out the Stashbandz, but I am uh, too rotund, to use them. Also, I'll be traveling in a hot part of the world, and it would be somewhat noticeable. Thanks for the feedback.

These guys make an infinity scarf with two pockets, one of which is an RFID blocking pocket! They're a Canadian outfit. I've seen them in person and they're a bit skinny for my liking (I'm talking about the scarf, not the makers, LOL), but the pocket is not obvious, even with a passport-sized notebook in it.
