Road trip music

Hey everyone!

We, and our Welsh Corgi, are driving from Indiana back to our native Oregon for a visit this summer. It's about 2300 miles, making it a perfect opportunity to listen to lots of different music. What are your favorite road-tripping albums/artists/tracks? I'm especially interested in stuff that came out in the last 1-2 years, but newness is secondary to awesomeness.

Once I get a bunch of responses I'll put together a Tom Bihn Forum playlist; if I have time I'll set up links to iTunes and Amazon.

Here are two things to get us kicked off (OK, three):
1. I am obsessed with "Dressed Sharply" (2011) by An Horse, probably because it sounds like every song that I used to listen to when I was in college in the late 90s.
2. Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues (2011).
3. A little less contemporary (and a lot less indie): Michael Hurley's Long Journey (1977).

I can't guarantee you'll like anything I like. My absolute favorite road trip music is anything by Edith Piaf or Louis Armstrong. For something newer, I have been listening to Mumford and Sons a lot, possibly to the point of obsession.

Hi Katy, thanks for your reply! I actually do like both Piaf and Armstrong--though I have to say I don't normally associate them with barreling through the Midwest. But the banjo on "The Cave"? Most definitely!

I listen to audio books and radio dramas on long drives. I get engrossed in the story and time just flies by.

Indeed! I have all of David Sedaris' audio books and an extensive collection of This American Life podcasts. Though.. I'll be laughing at a stop light while listening to David Sedaris and the person in the car next to me will look at me like I'm insane.

A couple of my favorite driving albums (can we still say albums?) are Miles Davis - Kind of Blue, and Pat Metheny - American Garage.

For new music, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Florence and the Machine are pretty good from what I have heard.

Oh my musical taste is extreme - as in one end to the other, and people have stated rather eclectic. (From A to Z, from Abba to Yothy Yindi for bands. Okay that is "A to Y", but I do not know much of Zemlinsky, the Austrian composer.)

However, I do have a file for my IPod actually called "Road Trip". Much of it is old, but with a beat so you can "dance" in your seat to stay awake while driving.

Oh! You can also make an account on Pandora and set up a few stations referencing the music you listed, they will generate a playlist of artists you may like . It's a great way to discover new music!

When I was growing up, road trips always meant listening to some Beach Boys music. Long flat sections of highway still make me think of summer songs, even when I'm listening to something else.

I drive between STL and South Florida a dozen times a year as well as to Denver,Cape Cod and others.
I listen to books on Tape and have been a member of Audible.com for 12 years or so.
With me if I don't time it right I end up having to drive around at my destination to finish a book! It just isn't the same unless I am in the car?

As for Music,I am "Old School" I guess,Allman Brothers,Buddy Guy,Gatemouth Brown,Little Feat,The Dead of course and another nod to American Garage especially going through the plains and I have become obsessed with Susan Tedeschi.
I guess I am really just Cheap for the Blues.

All just a prelude to a book usually.

I do carry a 30 gig load on an iPod and I am not afraid to use it!

Here here on the books on Tape Ed. Musically some Lyle Lovett would be required, some Led Zeppelin and AC/DC to stay awake, Stravinski to make you think and no one makes me sigh like Jane Monheit.

Custom Residential,Commercial A/V & Integration and Automation. I try to put the "Custom" in Custom.
I also do "Sudden Service" on almost anything almost anywhere,mostly Boardroom Automation and Presentation Systems

I have not yet but I will look her up. I am the commercial/pro end of things as a mfgr rep in the SE. We sell QSC, Sennheiser, RDL, WPW and some other stuff...
