How Heavy is your bag?

Just last week, I packed my Brain Bag for a return trip from Houston TX, to New Delhi, India. I had three laptops, three laptop chargers, an assortment of cables, locks, other chargers, a DSLR with three lenses, a hoody, and some other odds an ends crammed into it. It weight 35.6 lbs!
It cinched down nicely. I wouldn't recommend carrying the bag around like this - I don't plan to again. Regardless, it performed very well, and the Lufthansa gate agents didn't bat an eye. I love how the bag is short, yet deep. It gives the illusion that it is smaller than it is.

Yes, I realize I carry a lot of crap with me. But if my house burned down, I'd have anything that *really* matters to me. Well except for the rest of my TB bags
The bag is under my 10% body weight--but I think that rule only applies for when you're traveling with luggage
Interestingly, the camera backpack weighs less than the packed Ego - yet the Ego seems lighter when they're carried on opposite shoulders. The Absolute strap sure makes a difference.
I've heard that the rider should be no more than 20% of the weight of the horse, so I guess 10% would be right ... as we have half the number of legs... :-)
(I wouldn't examine the science of the above too closely)

Last time I packed to go away for a week my Western Flyer weighed 12 pounds and my Synapse weighed 8. This is over what would be, for me, the 10% rule of thumb. Both bags were easy enough to manage. I remember thinking it was easier to carry them than I thought it would be. My Brain bag on the other hand gets REALLY heavy REALLY fast. I think breaking the weight up between two bags that makes all the difference. I still need more work on the packing lighter thing.
Take care,
Moose

I'm bad... I tend to have over an inch-high stack of papers in the back pocket of my Ego. Then I stuff my LCB into the Ego. And then I put a Dell Latitude in there. I'm afraid to weigh the Ego. And I go even nuttier when traveling. I overstuff the Snake Charmer with way too many chargers (computer, iPod, Kindle, camera, laptop mouse....)

I'll play. Today on it's journey to work my very stuffed (I had a hard time closing the latch) Azalea LCB weighed 8 lbs 1 ounce. It contained...
In the main compartment:
iPad in a Sena red leather case
Laptop Lunchbox (this take up a TON of room)
Container of yogurt
Package of apple slices
Knitting project (Equivalent of 6 100 yard balls of yarn - no wonder it takes up so much room!)
Mystery Gift containing contact lens case and eye drops
Cork organizer wallet containing rewards cards
Box of Stash Tea (staying at work)
Box of Crystal Light drink mix packets (staying at work)
2 oz bottle of contact lens solution (staying at work)
In the front pocket:
Mini UV OP containing my work ID
Pair of glasses in soft case
In the back pocket:
Original print Tokidoki Denaro wallet (4" x 4" x 1")
iPhone in a pink and white Otterbox Defender caseLast edited by WhiteStar; 02-13-2012, 07:06 AM.

I have a Zephyr that is the perfect weight when carrying:
- Kindle
- One 8x11 textbook
- One 8x11 notebook
- One Kindle-sized book (but twice the thickness)
- One small umbrella
- Freudian Slip with pens
- iPad (in Waterfield Travel Express w/wireless keyboard)
- Moleskine
- glasses
...but if I substitute a 15" MacBook Pro (my work computer for the iPad), then I think the Zephyr is too heavy.
I have to admit, though, the Zephyr is my first "briefcase-style" EDC. I'm more used to backpacks. Maybe I'll find a way to make it more comfortable in the future. If not, it's back to the Smart Alec when I have to carry my work computer.

A Cadet is usually my every day bag. It has actually helped me slim down what I carry a bit...
13 inch MBP
7 inch Android Tablet with folding keyboard
Various pouches (2 medium, 1 pen/pencil, 3 mini, 2 small and a Waterfield Cableguy) with various cables, adapters and power supplies
Canon point and shoot camera
USB hub
LED flashlight
travel mouse
Jobe tripod
Notebook
USB tumb drives
15.4 pounds....
Right with you on the "more than I want to carry" front. When I carry my Zephyr it regularly topped 20 pounds...

OK, I'll play.
On an average day, I carry the following in a MCB:
27 oz. Klean Kanteen with sport top (empty; I fill up at work)
Moleskine notebook
iPad with Miniot cover, inside a Cache
Shure headphones in the pouch they came in
Small Organizer Pouch with eye drops, Advil, and lotion
Pen
a few post-its
Some sort of lunch
On the conservative side I'd say this all weighs about 6 pounds including the weight of the bag. If I don't have the lunch I can carry everything in my pockets or by hand, but that's no fun.

How Heavy is your bag?
I'm a fairly new Ego owner and find I can fit way more in it than I can realistically carry.
I'm not the strongest individual so perhaps what I consider heavy might not be by other peoples standards.
Anyone interested in sharing their contents list AND what it weighs? This is not really about airline requirements etc, more about what people are physically happy with schlepping.
My Ego as packed in this post weighs 7.3kg (=16.1 lb)
This was my travelling office for a weekend - house to car, car to house at either end .. so not a big trek at all.Tags: None
