Packing the Mini Yeoman Duffel for a weekend trip

I’ve been test packing my mini YD as promised, here are the pictures. This is what I would wear and take for a weekend away if I had some kind of occasion coming up (a birthday celebration or something similar). I always pick the outfit I want to wear for something specific (party, hiking, sight seeing) and build everything else around that.

This was the outfit I picked for my imaginary birthday celebration:



This means I would be wearing the skirt the whole weekend and just go with a different top and shoes to make it weather and travel appropriate:



The socks are perfect for having warm and comfortable feet in my boots. Because my outerwear would need to work for the dressy occasion I would go with my wool coat for outerwear (instead of a parka or something like that):



I picked my SCB as an additional bag to the YD and went with the Aubergine because I liked it best with all the clothing I picked:

The details:

• the black slippers in a Sea to Summit stuff bag in XS (shoe size 38)
• Q-Kit in Steel with the charger for my smartphone
• Aeronaut 45 Small Laundry Cube holding the dressy top and my black cardigan
• Aeronaut 30 Small Laundry Cube holding 2x underpants, one bra, 2x tights, an Icebreaker camisole, and merino leggings and a t-shirt to sleep in
• Steel Halcyon Deluxe Spiff Kit with the usual stuff

The packing cubes in this combination aren’t the best size for the YD, but they work because everything’s underpacked. And these are the ones I already had available because I normally use them in my RB36. There was still room in the YD, it was by no means stuffed. You can get quite a lot in there! It’s definitely big enough for a weekend trip, especially if you carry another bag for your personal stuff. If I had wanted to take my camera, I would have probably gone for my DLBP with a Travel Cubelet inside (for the imaginary party).

This is a great packing review. I did a packing post when I used my YD mini for an 18-day work trip. I've since used it a few more times on work trips of an equal or longer duration.

It is an awesome little bag and fits a surprising large amount of things. I had a Night Flight Travel Duffel, which was also great, but I traded it for a Western Flyer (another bag I use a lot). And though the end pockets of the NFTD are amazing, I like the open space of the YD mini better. I can pack it much easier.

After reading your review, I may use my small A45 packing cube and maybe my small Tri-Star packing cube. Right now, I use a set of REI packing cubes.

Oh wow, 18 days!!! Off to take a look... Btw, I also thought I might want a NFTD, but I suspect the mini Yeoman is a better choice for me too. The stuff I’m taking varies too much.

Much as I love my NFTD I have to say that my YD is far more "versatile" and usable for all sorts of things - no need to worry about awkward sizes and shapes....they all just seem to fit!

I've always wanted the best of both worlds... a NFTD with the end compartments and all the pockets and O-Rings... but with zippers on those end compartment walls to be able to open them up as needed for awkward items to get that big space like the mini YD.

A NFTD with a slightly bigger main compartment, with or without zipped inside inners would be sooooo good! The end pockets are a great feature, as is the pocket under the main flap. I wish the YD had one of those.
I still use my halcyon NFTD a lot but for adaptability the YD excels.

I would be happy with a mini yeoman modified with end pocket accessible from the end to hold a 3DOC or travel cubelet. Looking at one of my mini Yeomans, I visualize the addition of the features and pockets that the NFTD offers thus makes a lot happen with a quite small bag.

This post inspired me to try this for a five day Thanksgiving trip. Shown in the top photo is how things are laid out as they are in the bag. Red Tom Bihn stuff sack: three t-shirts, pants, long sleeve shirt, shorts, hat. Black square bag behind stuff sack is binoculars. Small green stuff sack has two underwear, two pair of socks. Tom Bihn Side Effect is the misc and tech gear. Tom Bihn 3D clear organizer is the bathroom kit.





Flip flops in a blue fabric shoe cover and iPad mini sit on top after packing.

Packing the Mini Yeoman Duffel for a weekend trip

This is my normal pack. A three week trip to Sydney. Nothing too exciting. Warm climate.

Three shirts and one pair shorts (wear another shirt and pants and wear shoes). Toiletries. Then small A45 laundry cube for 4 sets of undies and tshirts.


Pack the shirts and shorts into a large A45 laundry cube. I kind of fold the large A45 cube in half and put it in the mini yeoman in a U shape. Then put the small laundry cube on top of it “in the gap of the U”.


The toiletries are stuffed in the end where there’s some extra space left over.


All ups still space for more stuff on top. 27oz water bottle and flip flops will probably fill that space.


As I’m going to be working in Sydney some of the time I’m also taking a DLBP with my laptop and that’s about it. Obviously has place if I need any more things.

This time I’ve packed for three nights, spending time with family. Taking the train from work tomorrow, coming back to work on Thursday.

Here’s what I’m wearing tomorrow:

• Underwear/socks
• Jeans
• Icebreaker shortsleeved shirt
• Chunky wool sweater
• My one pair of shoes I’m taking (have yet to decide which pair)
• Wool coat
• Scarf, gloves and hat

Here’s what I packed in the Mini Yeoman Duffel:

• A second pair of jeans
• Sweater
• A pair of house slippers in a Sea to Summit stuff sack
• Small A30 laundry cube holding three pair of underpants, three pair of socks, one bra, one shortsleeved merino shirt, merino camisole, sleep tee and merino leggings and a bathing suit (which my sister wants to borrow)
• DSK with the usual stuff

I’m taking my MCB for work and personal stuff. I won’t take any electronics besides my smartphone. The A5 GWOP will hold a book (I am going to pick one tomorrow at work), the super mini GWOP holds my headphones.
