the medium cafe bag goes to washington, dc

hi folks,

we got a break from the rain and spent most of the day outside today. amongst our activities was an outing to the nation's capital. while we didn't run into president or mrs. obama, we did get some fun shots with our navy / cayenne medium cafe bag that we wanted to share with you. we hope you will enjoy them!

the medium cafe bag, along with every other bag that comes out of the tom bihn factory is an unparalleled work of modern art.

while my son didn't come out of the tom bihn factory, he too is an unparalleled work of modern art.

so we decided to make some pictures of our medium cafe bag alongside some of the remarkable pieces of art at the hirshhorn museum and sculpture garden.

we really enjoyed the art at the hirshhorn. but we also wanted to take some time to connect with nature.

so we made our way over to the enid a. haupt garden behind the smithsonian castle.

so maverick.... for a travelog day with a force of nature, what's in the bag? I carry a small backpack (Gregory Reactor) for days like that but it isn't always the right setup, and certainly would not fit my wife's D80. So I usually end up carrying a camera bag with the D80 and camcorder, then the backpack too, with my kids' point and shoots on my belt and the snacks and emergency asthma meds in the backpack. (yes I am quite the sight when fully loaded....)

i love shooting with my nikon d700, but i often leave that at home and bring my leica d-lux 4. that's what we've done the last two saturdays.

we had come home from my son's soccer class to eat lunch and then headed out to dc. so i didn't have very much to carry. we had a couple of water bottles, some crackers and cookies, my clear organizer wallet, iphone, and car keys. i also had a victorinox multitool and flashlight that i usually leave in my bag. it was a pretty light outing.

i've done the outings with the 24-70mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses each on their own body. but then i had a kid. and the kid grew and learned to run really fast... :)

two full size DSLRs in the bag with lenses attached? wow. how were they protected? i guess it would easily fit one (in a TB camera insert, cough) with the 18-135 lens and a camcorder then. not sure i would want to mix in water bottles with those but snacks/meds would work for sure... very interesting.

(btw that leica looks sweet. for the $ i guess it better be!!! i know the small panasonics these days mostly have the leica lenses...)

i have used a shoulder bag from tenba that would hold two bodies, the 24-70mm f/2.8, the 70-200mm f/2.8, and a flash and battery pack for the flash, along with compact flash cards, battery chargers, cleaning cloth, spray and other accessories.

it provided protection for the equipment, but what i didn't like about it was that it was very bulky.

i've also used a suitcase from lowepro that would hold this and more when i was a wedding photographer.

once i got to the event location, the bodies and lenses would come together and i would carry a body and lens on each shoulder, leaving the bag in the space provided for me or in my car if we were going to be outdoors.

i believe all of the panasonic digital cameras use leica lenses. the panasonic lx3 and leica d-lux 4 have the same 24-60m f/2.0-2.8 lens, and the design of he bodies is very similar. there is a difference in the software in the two. i've been pleased with what the leica can do.

I have a small all-weather Lowepro that I use for the D80 but it doesn't quite fit with the camcorder. I find the larger camera bags are a bit unwieldy and make for such obvious targets when traveling. I would love to be able to put the D80 with the 18-135, my new canon hf11, an extra battery for each, an SD card or two, and the SB28 speedlight in a bag like the cafe bag instead of a camera shoulder bag or backpack, and still have room for my kids' panasonic p&s when necessary, and throw in some snacks, tissues, meds, bandaids. i get so tired of carrying two bags around and always worrying that someone is going to try to snag the camera bag while it is protruding from my side, and having to slide it around or wait for my wife to unzip it to take out the camera when she wants it... of course, the impact protection from a dedicated bag probably outweighs the inconvenience...

if you'd like to use a messenger style bag rather than a backpack, i think you could hold what you are describing very nicely in the ego.

if i got my information right, the dimensions on your video camera are 2.9 x 2.5 x 5.1".

my sony hvr-a1u is 2.9 x 4.1 x 7.6". i believe that's without the audio inputs.

if i'm not mistaken, your 18-135mm lens is 3.4" long and has a diameter of 2.9".

my 50mm f/1.4G lens is 2.1" long and has a diameter of 2.9" and has the HB-47 lens hood that probably add about 1" to the length. so it won't be exact, but we'll get close.

i don't know if the camera insert will fit inside the ego, but let me get take some shots of the d700 body, the 50mm f/1.4G lens with the hood attached, and the sony hvr-z1u video camera. and we can see how much space there is for everything else.

I like the Smart Alec--precisely cos it is a smart alec and seems will be the perfect backpack for mass transit and India--no nimble fingers can reach it easily! I like the Ruck's Sac but not sure if that will be enough for running around.....
