Aeronaut on regional jets

The recent post on how well a Tri-Star fit into a plane's overhead compartment led me to think that some might find it useful to know about the Aeronaut.

I mostly fly United and have now successfully and easy fit my loaded Aeronaut into the overhead bins on all versions of their Canadair 700 and 200's.

The overheads are really small and to look at it you might not think it would work, but even with a full bag there's been no problem.

All compartments of my bag have been full. The one time I really pushed it by overstuffing the bag I had to sweat a bit to make it fit, but when it's not overstuffed it fits perfectly.

I second this. On at least four occasions in the past several months I've been on a regional jet and have been able to fit my full Aeronaut in the tight overhead bin each time. Once I was the last person on the plane and watched as two other passengers tried to fit their carry-on in the only remaining bin spot and couldn't do it -- they both had to go tag their bags. But my Aeronaut slid right in.

I only fly on regional jets about twice a year, but my Aeronaut has fit in the overhead bin every time. Meanwhile, *most* of the other passengers are forced to check their carry-on bags at the gate.

Several years later, thank you for this thread. I have a 45-minute layover at O'Hare, likely with a terminal change, so I've been wondering about carry-on (to make sure my bags arrive when I do) vs. checking (which would allow me to hustle between terminals better if needed). Sounds like I can easily carry the Aeronaut on, so I might as well!

Ditto! I'm on a CRJ first thing Monday morning, so I'm looking forward to flying with my Aeronaut for the first time. Glad to know that it should fit without a problem (assuming you aren't the last person to board the plane).

I just flew round-trip to Nashville two weeks back on Embraer ERJ-145s and was literally the only person who didn't gate check a bag. I had plenty of room in the overhead for my Aeronaut and plenty of room at my feet for my Co-Pilot. Granted, my Aeronaut was about half-full (can you say "time for a Tri-Star!"?) - I had my Co-Pilot in it until I got on the plane. I'll throw another bag experience into this thread. The Brain bag fits quite easily into the Embraer and Canadair United jets. On the CRJs, I have had to turn it sideways, but it fits "end-in" on the Embraer's. Some flight attendents will try to reposition it sideways because the handle sticks out a bit, but when you slide the door up to close, it fits right into the door's curve.

I'm glad to know about the Aeronaut - nearly all of my flights end up being on regional jets.

I had to gate check the Aeronaut when flying in and out of my tiny hometown airport on 19 seat planes.

Checking back in - indeed, all the "normal" rolling bags were gate-checked, but my sweet Aeronaut passed the visual check and made it in the Canadair overhead just fine. I'm glad it wasn't packed as full as I do sometimes, but it still held a week's worth of clothes for a wedding and then work.

Echoing the same sentiments here. I managed to fit my packed Aeronaut on a UA CRJ 200 in the overhead while many had to gate check their bag.

My July flight experience with the Aeronaut on Delta...

CRJ200 the bag fits fine in the overhead bins on a length
orientation. If the bag is overstuffed it may be a squeeze.

A319 the bag slides into the overhead bin on a width
orientation very nicely leaving plenty of space in the bin.

Also no harassment from the GA's on boarding either.

On my second most recent regional jet flight, the flight attendant told me that I had to gate check my TriStar because it was too long for the plane. I pointed out that it would fit easily in the overhead bin, she said that the FAA was enforcing length restrictions. I said "Please" and she asked if I had either a computer or medicine in the bag. I told her that I had both and she let me carry the bag onboard.

On my more recent regional jet flight (the return trip), no mention of this newly enforced policy was made and I had no trouble carrying the bag on board.

The FAA does not regulate luggage fit, otherwise the big rollaboard would have been banned from the cabin a long time ago.

It was a power trip and I believe you had the right answer for the it, computer and medicine.


I think the same kind of power trip was directed at Eric (FC on the forum) once, and he told them, so you don't mind being liable for electronics, or something like that, but, of course, in a much smarter way.

It felt like a power trip to me, too.

The bag was even particularly small because I hadn't put anything in the middle compartment and I tuck away the backpack straps before boarding the plane because they slow me down when I'm stowing the bag.

The power trip was especially galling because the flight was delayed 3.5 hours due to mechanical issues.
