OSCA - Old School Carry All - First Look

Thanks to TB for providing for a Navy 1050 ballistic/Dawn 210 ballistic Old School Carry All for review - my opinions are my own

This is a neat little retro bag that's not so little. For whatever reason, to me it looks smaller than it's capacity (typical TB Tardis)... maybe because (especially when underpacked) the two side 3D pockets are unobtrusive and so integrated. I keep a list of my TB bags in order by capacity/volume and it was enlightening to see it sit above the small Shop Bags, Pop Tote, S19, Paragon, etc. and just below the Shadow Guide 23L, Trucks, large Shop Bags...

Visually, it also makes me think of old school bowling ball or Doctor's bags, because of the shape.

For whatever reason, despite loving 400d halcyon for most of my bags, I really wanted this one in 1050 ballistic and Navy is such a classic rich colour.

I've only had it for a short time, so no chance to actually travel with it yet, but it first strikes me as a great weekend getaway bag (with more organization than the mini Yeoman) or a personal item on a flight.
Pre-pandemic, I used a Pop Tote as a gym bag and this would be as good or better for what I carry.

I like the option to carry by the handles (gym, car travel, etc) and to add a strap (probably what I would do if this was a personal item on a flight with an A/T30 on my back).

So here's a mock pack out of what I'd bring on a couple day trip by plane or car if I was traveling reasonably light but with a laptop and wasn't using a backpack. I specifically included a pair of shoes to see what that was like; I know shoe packing is a key question from many folks.
None of the internal pouches were stuffed full.
The bag overall was full, but certainly not jammed. This was basically a quick grab & pack, which the bag lends itself to.

Fully packed (not stuffed) top view.

side mesh pocket: size 9.5 Merrel mocks in a nylon bag; Island E/TC used as my traveling office
I could have rolled my merino socks and put them into the shoes to free up room in the other section

other side pocket: Solaris SSC with tech; A/T30 Small Laundry Cube with bra, socks, undies
Several of the TB cubes and Eagle Creek cubes would work in this bag

main compartment: MacBook Air 13" in padded case; folded pair of jeans; (Black 420 2x2) GB of random stuff to simulate toiletry bag; Cobalt Cerylon PCSB with 3 shirts
the laptop in it's case fits centered on long edge and tucked under the top zipper flap area; slightly fiddly but no big deal
In retrospect, I probably shouldn't have used mostly blue accessories & clothes, makes it harder to see, but I have a lot of blues!

Overall I really like the possibilities and flexibility of this bag; it reminds me of the minimal organization/flexibility of the Paragon, which I've been using a lot lately.
With an Op Tech mini strap, I'd use this cross body when carrying the A30 or T30 on my back for a flight instead of a zip shop bag... if using the T30, the laptop would go in there and free up some room.

ETA: I have one PCSB, several GB, an old Kit, the A30 laundry cubes, the SSC, a LSC, I think an A30 end pocket, a couple Eagle Creek cubes, two E/TCs, and a LGD at least with me, if anyone wants photos of different things in different places. And my Dad is size 10-10.5 shoes that I'll try to see where they fit.

I wanted to mention that bchaplin has a review up on a separate blog page My Very Long Review of Tom Bihn's Old School Carry All. That review included a table listing bags with capacities bracketing the 22-liter OSCA.

I received the same model OSCA from Tom BIHN as G42 (Navy 1050d Ballistic with Dawn interior), and I thought I would add a couple of my unboxing pics to make a few more points to piggyback on G42’s review. First, in length the OSCA is slightly longer than the Mini Yeoman Duffel, but not as long as the Small Yeoman Duffel. Here’s a picture comparison with my Small Burnt Orange Yeoman Duffel

You can see that the offset strap attachment points on the OSCA are closer in, while for the Yeoman Duffel they’re set at the ends. For the smaller OSCA, I think this makes for a more comfortable shoulder carry experience. The Small Yeoman Duffel is a much larger bag (28 liters) than the OSCA, but it sits flatter to the ground
OSCA in Navy 1050d Ballistic Nylon/Dawn with Burnt Orange Small Yeoman Duffel
In my review of the Mini Yeoman Duffel in December 2016, I showed that it could be used to carry a 13” laptop, so it is perhaps not surprising that the slightly longer OSCA can also do so, but you can see from G42’s picture that the laptop slots in vertically into that zippered pocket, and that the handles for hand carrying the bag more closely bracket the central zipper. The two side zippered pockets can be seen in the above view of the OSCA, which has a more vertical orientation than the Yeoman Duffel design.

That's a nice review bchaplin - I really like your chart!
(and the Small Yeoman was $100 last time it was available)

moriond - to clarify on my pic/pack out, my 13" Macbook Air was on it's long edge/horizontally in the main compartment (if I read your comment right)

Yes, what I meant was that for the Mini and Small Yeoman Duffel laptop packups, the laptops were all laid flat, parallel to the bottoms of the bags, and not “on edge”. What was not obvious (without seeing it demoed in the picture) was that the entire laptop would fit through the “U-shaped” opening of the Mini Yeoman Duffel, given that the zippered opening didn’t go all the way to the ends of the bag, and that if I flipped over the flattened Mini YD and laid the 13” laptop in a 6Z cache on top of it, it looked like this:
13” Mac Laptop on top of flattened bottom of Mini Yeoman Duffel
In fact, I could also stuff that Solar Side Effect upright beside the inserted 13” laptop in cache, and also fit in a 14” laptop there (or drop in a Daylight Briefcase holding just a laptop into that Mini YD. Because of the curved shape of the OSCA and its zipper in the vertical direction, there is not as much leeway in carrying a larger laptop in the bag as in the Mini Yeoman Duffel.

ETA: Maybe I should point out that an 11” iPad Pro can easily be carried where you have your laptop in the OSCA, if that isn’t obvious?

Great photos G42 and moriond ~ someone today was asking to see it side-by-side with the Yeoman, so I shared this with them. We somehow never take many of the bags-side-by-side-with-other bags photos so these are very helpful!

Have a question? @Darcy (to make sure I see it)

Great reviews and pics G42, bchaplin, moriond! As I just returned from a short trip to the US and the new items arrived too late to try them our right away, I just add first impressions pics just for the color comparison. I add more thoughts later :)

This bag was provided to me by Tom Bihn free of charge. When I saw the first pictures of the Old School Carry All I thought this has to be in Burnt Orange! I do love this color on other bags but because of the retro feel it looks especially nice on this bag (I added the Absolute Shoulder Strap from my collection as this is a shoulder bag although the carry handles are really comfortable too):

My first impression is that the main compartment is smaller and that the side compartments are much deeper than they appear at first glance. What I also like is that the bottom of the bag is or at least feels reinforced which I think is great (especially in comparison with the Yeoman Duffles which feel much less structured).

I do not need the Old School Carry All, there's no use for it in my life, but I want to say that Navy 1050 ballistic/Dawn 210 ballistic is my dream combination and I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get an Aeronaut 30 in it at some point. (I don't think the layout of the Techonaut would work as well for me - the three compartments of the Aeronaut 45 are excellent and I need those two flat not-lockable end exterior pockets for how I pack.) It does look like a great size for a personal item on trips, able to be sturdy even when not fully packed.
(I am waiting for the Side Kick in Nightwalk/Tidal to come back so I can get one, I missed out the first time!)

marbenais Side Kick in Nightwalk/Tidal is in stock not sure if you already have one

We ordered two OSCA's today ..... black ballistic / moab for Larry and halcyon tiaga combo for me. I really wanted one in black halcyon to match many of my other TB items but do have Side Kick in 400 Tiaga halcyon so I'm sure it willl be fine. We need to start going to the exercise room / pool in our development and these will make great gym bags. Love the entire set up of this bag :)

Ordered Navy/Taiga OSCA this morning after watching the night walk and navy/dawn low stocks disappear as soon as they appeared. Am I the only one that finds Navy/Taiga to be an odd combination? TB never ceases to amaze with their utter disregard for the color wheel!:D:cool::rolleyes:

I'm going to retract my eyeroll at the Navy/Taiga combo. Somewhat surprisingly (to me), I rather like the white grid Taiga 200 in person.

I know this comes up in basically every discussion of Taiga, but incredible how much the color can change based on context (much lighter, pastel-y green than I expected)!
