My colleague's deep, burning love for his new ID

    Hey everyone,
Earlier this month, I suggested to one of my former colleagues that he pick up a TB bag to house his brand-new 13" MBA. He has some major issues with his back, and I thought he might appreciate the Absolute Strap. Like me, he also obsesses over purchases of this nature, and I knew the craftsmanship of TB would really appeal to him.

So, lo and behold, he's just received his new ID and he sent me an email extolling its virtues. He said I can post it here, and so here it is:

Got my Tom Bihn ID Messenger Bag yesterday. Very cool! Pretty much exactly what I've been searching for for a couple of years now. It's the perfect size, it's very well made, and I love the Absolute Strap. Makes a huge difference on my shoulder and back. Even the box it came in was well-designed! I also got the Horizontal Brain Cell for my MacBook Air, and it's really nice, too. The top flaps don't seem to completely close down all the way—it's almost as if the Air is about 1/8 of an inch too big, top to bottom when it's in the Brain Cell case, but it's not a big deal at all. I suspect that over time the flaps will loosen up a little and the padding in the bottom of the bag will compress a little, allowing the bag to close all the way. I love the way the Brain Cell attaches to the inside of the ID bag. Super nice touch. And I now won't worry about carrying around the laptop, as it's very well protected in the Brain Cell.

The ID bag has not only a shoulder strap but also removable straps to put around one's waist. If I were riding a bike, for instance, those straps would prevent the bag from sliding around. It's genius the way they can be removed and stashed away somewhere. I looked at bags from Keen, Timbuk 2, Scooba, etc. Many of them had those waist straps, but when they did, in no case were they removable, so you end up with these stupid, long straps hanging off the bag and getting in your way 95% of the time. Not so with the Tom Bihn bag.

I have one small, niggling complaint about the ID bag: There are two zippered pockets just inside the front flap, I guess for a cell phone, glasses, etc. They're lined with a soft, suede-like material. My cell phone fits in one of them just fine, as does my iPod, but my case for my reading glasses does not fit. The pocket needs to be about 1/4 of an inch bigger for the zipper to close. It puzzles me why they didn’t make the pockets slightly bigger. I wish I could keep the glasses in one of those pockets, as they're easy to access and I reach for the glasses all the time, but it's a no-go. I'll look for a smaller case for the glasses, but the one I have is already pretty small. There are other pockets for the glasses case, of course.

[NB: he's since found a case that fits in the side pocket.]

Do you have any of those little organizer pouches they sell? I think I'm going to buy a couple for the bag, for change and such stuff. That Freudian Slip insert is pretty darn cool, too. Are you familiar with that? If not, it's an insert that will hold pens, files, etc. I may get that at some point. My god does this all appeal to my need for organization.

[Update: he's getting an Organizer Wallet and an extra key strap.]

I'll tell you, you've not steered me wrong with recommendations and such: that awesome restaurant, the MacBook Air, and now the Tom Bihn bag.

    I'm getting a Corgi.

Take care, and thanks for the sweet advice.

Awesome! I like the part where he explains the Freudian Slip to you :D.

It sounds like the sling in his Brain Cell may have been adjusted a little too tightly. It's a fairly quick fix, I've found Maverick's youtube video to be the best at explaining the process.

He needs to know how awesome the Clear Organizer Pouches are! You told him to get some right? .... right!?

Also, what is this awesome restaurant?

Hi Katy, I'll direct him to the thread so he can take a peek at the video. I know he's watched a ton of them already, but having the actual Brain Cell in front of him would probably help him more than just trying to visualize the process.

I will tell him to get SO MANY organizer pouches. It's funny--most of mine are solid fabric, but as I plan for the next few trips I'm doing, I really see the need for having the visibility.

The awesome restaurant is Truva in Atlanta. I'm not even sure it was that awesome, but it's this Mediterranean place that has a ton of vegetarian/vegan options, and a lunch buffet. It was really good since we were all at a conference last year during Lent and a lot of people really needed to have vegetarian food on Friday. Also, it's sort of easy to not eat any vegetables at all when at a conference, and Truva had many different salads.

I think I actually heard the glug-glug-glug of him drinking the Kool-Aid when I read his email to you.

Maybe, Jenne, but I think he's turned against me. Look what was in my inbox this morning:

I'm super-obsessed with that darn Cadet bag, and then Tom Bihn sent me an email this morning, announcing that new bag!

Dammit, [Badger]. I feel like you have given me a free shot of heroin or a free hit of crack. "Go ahead, [Friend of Badger], just try it . . . " Why did you have to turn me on to Tom Bihn's products?! Some friend you are. :-)

Within the next hour: Just ordered the Cadet.

I think I've given him a sickness that is curable only by regular infusions of 1050d Ballistic.

This makes me giggle quite a bit.

                @misterN:

want to know what's even more sad? When I saw that you'd just ordered an Aeronaut AND a Cadet, I briefly saw red (or is that Crimson?). I was so freaking jealous.

I'm over it now. Sort of.

Haha. I took Maria's signature to heart and changed it a bit too. "Buy the best, cry once." For me I guess it is: "Buy the best, all at once, then cry once."

I'll be pointedly ignoring my credit card bill for a bit before I open it.

                    Nice one.

Whenever I embark on some massive order, I just tell myself that I'm saving on the shipping. Works every time.

My colleague's got a new Cadet

My friend, as you'll recall, was delighted with his new ID, and then anguished when the Cadet was released. He ended up buying a Cadet to test side-by-side with the ID. It arrived yesterday and here is his initial reaction:

Got the Cadet yesterday. Very nice bag! K and I were at a game when it came, so I didn't have much time to check it out last night. I'm going to have a very hard time deciding between the ID and the Cadet. Both bags have distinct features I really like. The Cadet is a tight, well-designed bag. By tight I mean that nothing is wasted, space-wise or features-wise. The internal case for the MBA is pretty neat. It's a little hard to get my mac to slide in and out, though. I suspect the Incipio case I have around the laptop is the reason—there's friction from the plastic case and the way it rubs on the padded internal case. And it's a tight, tight fit. It'd almost certainly loosen over time. Back to the call between the two bags: I like the ID's flap that closes over the whole bag. It's going to be a tough call! I'm not taking either bag to campus today—hard to do—so I can try both out at home when I have time to make a careful decision.

Of course, I am trying to get him to keep both.

He reads the forums sometimes. Let's all encourage him to do the right thing (heh heh)!

I, personally, would love to hear more about his comparison of the ID and Cadet, as they're two of the bags I've been considering putting on my "Christmas Wish List". Some days I think the ID might be too large and other days I think the Cadet might be too small.

I've asked him to update me with his decision. I think he's torn at the moment because he really likes both of the bags, but doesn't feel like he should have both of them for some reason. Man, I'd buy a new bag every other week if I could afford it.
