Second thoughts on the co-piolot

Up to about 8 months ago I was unfamiliar with Tom Bihn products. When I found the website I easily got sucked in. I travel a good amount for work and I found a number of great solutions to business and personal travel issues. I started with a Tri-star then added cubes and pouches. Got a MCB for the weekends and then a Zephyr for daily work use and eventually another MCB for my spouse and I loved all of them. Finally, in a moment of Tom Bihn obsession I also picked up the co-pilot.

For some reason I just could not find a great use for it. With the Tri-Star my stuff was already relatively close at hand in the overhead. The MCB was more comfortable to wear around town. It took a big adjustment on my part to get used to one bagging it so two bags seemed like I was moving backwards. However, I have to say the co-pilot really shines for me as a light travel briefcase at conferences. I do not need my laptop during the day so I can leave it in the room (or in the Tri-Star). The co-pilot holds files, materials, pens, notebook, iPad, phones, etc. to get you through the day. Mine is black so it looks more professional vs. my MCB as well.

I also didn't realize when I bought it how well it fits in the front of the Tri-Star while still leaving room for shoes. This allows me to one bag it through the security and ground transportation stages but travel light when I get to my conferences. I guess my Co-Pilot was a solution waiting for a problem for a while but I am glad I have it! I have not found a great use for the water bottle pocket on the Co-pilot or the Tri-Star yet but maybe that will happen someday too.

WELCOME to the Tom Bihn forums, F650GS! You have stumbled upon the black-hole on the TB website that does indeed suck you in. You will see posts elsewhere that talk about how there are black holes in the Tom Bihn bags as well ... that's because they are so well and carefully designed that they hold a lot more than they appear to be able to!

By the way, F, if your spouse is male, you might have him consider that the Co-Pilot makes for a great "murse." I have two (well, one will arrive tomorrow), and I love them! Keeping an iPad, a barbecue cookbook, an NFL schedule, AND a picture of a Harley make for a good excuse for a man to be carrying around the Co-Pilot as a murse. (Darn spell-checker wants to change Murse to Nurse!).

Have fun in the forums! Lots of good folk here ... although many have that distant gaze as they wait in anticipation for the crafty UPS guy delivering their Tom Bihn packages ... by the way, you should start collecting the coveted TB shipping boxes! I hear they are selling well to collectors on eBay ;)

I have not found a great use for the water bottle pocket on the Co-pilot or the Tri-Star yet but maybe that will happen someday too.

I use the outer pocket of my Tri-Star to hold either a folding umbrella or a rolled up light nylon windbreaker shell in case it rains. (I don't always carry an umbrella, since it's not necessary for most of my trips.). In cold weather conditions I might put a rolled up down vest in the front pocket. Alternatively, these items could go into the zippered pocket just behind the Tri-Star for easy access when I get out at a destination. Since I'm traveling from Hawaii I don't normally use heavy outerwear or a raincoat, and this pocket is the easy place to access gear for dealing with changing weather conditions when I step off a plane. Then, too, in some instances you may use this as a water bottle pocket.

Hi folks thanks for the comments and suggestions. Sadly to date all of my boxes have been unadorned. Something to hope for I guess :rolleyes:. If I get one I can sell it to buy more TB stuff!
