Tri-star first impressions and short trip packing list

A few weeks ago I had an opportunity to try out my new Tristar for a short trip on even shorter notice. I am happy to say it performed flawlessly. Just the perfect size for 2-5 days without doing laundry. As usual every inch of it is perfect, not a stray thread to be found. The bag looks great, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to take it into any business meeting with its sharp looking black exterior.

Here is my sloppy, less than refined packing list for the trip, I was gone 4 days, some of the activities consisted of a funeral, wake, emptying a house and storage locker and a few casual meals.
Back compartment:

Middle compartment:

4 t-shirts (fit snugly 3 wide using the flip fold device I made for the aeronaut small packing cubes

Thanks so much for sharing the photos of your suit in the Tri-Star. I'm very sorry for your loss. This is a great packing list, and really shows how the TB bags can be used for ALL situations, not just casual travel!

I appreciate your review of the Tri-Star. I've been waffling between the Aeronaut, the Western Flyer, and the Tri-Star, and I think I've finally decided. When I next have the money, I'm getting a Tri-Star! Most of my travel is of the 3-5 day variety, and I no longer travel with my laptop, but with my iPad. This bag seems to be a perfect fit for that type of travel.

I had the same dilemma as well when I was looking at the bags. I eliminated the western flyer as being a little too small for the type of traveling I do. So I went back and forth between the Tri-star and Aeronaut for ages before placing an order for the Aeronaut and all the packing cubes, it works wonderfully for extended trips but I found that for shorter trips I was packing extra clothes just as an excuse to use it. One or two T-shirts is alright but six extra shirts might be a bit much for a 3 day trip, but since getting the Tristar I have found it to be great for anything from an overnight all the way to a minimally packed 5 days that could be extended by doing laundry on the road.

It holds it's shape better than the aeronaut, so if you have it half empty it will still look fine. I highly recommend getting the packing cube backpack and at least one smaller packing cube for your underwear and socks.

That was my concern about the Aeronaut as well. I am a recovering over-packer, and am very leery of getting the largest bag just for the sake of cubic inches. I have bridged the gap from check wheelie bags, and currently use an eBags Weekender Motherlode. It works really well, except that fully packed, it is way too heavy for me to handle. That's another reason that the mid-size bag is calling my name.

I love my Aeronautes in Ballistic and Dyneema and they are great packing clothes to bail out in a hurry kind of bags and pretty much perfect with Packing Cubes.

However, I found myself choosing to carry the Tristar much more than the Aeronaute, and I enjoyed packing it more.

Conclusion, I am a Tristar convert.

Good to hear that others went through a lengthy Aernaut/Tristar discernment! I just ordered a Tristar after finally concluding that a fully packed Aeronaut would be a bit much on my back... I am a believer in pack for a week=pack for a month and will put that to the test in a short while when I test travel the Tristar for a month of helping out at a day camp for children...

I just put a Tristar in Nordic Dyneema in my wish list. It's a pricey item, and I know the color may go the way of the dinosaur if I don't order it quickly. Trouble is, money isn't flush at the moment. So, I'll sit, and save, and scrounge to sell some things around the house to see if I can get it covered. If not, I'll find a different color later. But I LOVE the look of the Nordic. My mother-in-law got a Synapse 19 in that color, and it is gorgeous!

I did the pack for a week=pack for a month for the first time on my first journey with my Dyneema Aeronaute and Tristar.

And I made very big blunters, one of them not packing an adequately warm sleeping oufit (it was very early spring in chilly Europe), not having enough really casual clothes, but it ended up being better since Europe is less casual than he U.S, bring in full size headphones.


While looking at my warm weather wardrobe, I found out I had a lot of beautiful and colorful tank tops.

I once worn one on top of a white tee for modesty purpose and I find the pair really great, if used under a long sleeve shirt, It can also be dressed up.

My problem is finding ethically sourced tees.

I think I need to go back to the made in U.S.A ressources Darcy shared, in the meantime, if anyone has a favorite brand of ethically sourced tees, I am all ears!

Backpack, in terms of the sleepwear issue, I always (except sometimes in high summer) pack a set of lightweight synthetic long underwear. They make great pajamas, you can wear the top as a shirt, and are great under normal clothes if there is a cold snap or just too much A/C. They take next to no space.

I can feel our shared French background as my family bought me some when I was little, I am allergic to them.


I need cotton layers. the next shopping trip is most probably going to include a visit to the discount rack of many stores to see what their long sleeve kimono tops offerings are and if they have discounted summer maxi dresses, lounging wear for summer is way too short.

This spring, I had to evacuate my hotel room, really fast, due to a sudden tornado warning. It taught me the importance of having nice looking sleep clothes, it was really hot but I did pack a long night gown and a long sleeve kimono top.
I froze while we waited for the power to come back on in the lobby which was exposed to cold air coming from the door which people keep going in and out of.

I think the Synapse and Small Cafe Bag I took with me, kept my back. shoulders and core warm, that is what kept me for catching a cold.



However, getting to the discount rack usually means buying non sustainable items, not made in the U.S.A.

Even La Redoute items in that category are imported.

A big dilemma.

Backpack...Have you tried silk? If you are not allergic to it, it comes in different weights and provides an amazing amount of warmth for its lightness. It also makes a great base layer. :-)
