Side Effect is a good match for iPad mini

Took my iPad mini to the beach today in the side effect, it's a great match. The iPad mini fits exactly in the bag, and there's still ample room for all the other things you want. Bear in mind that there's no foam padding, so you can't carelessly throw the bag around, but as long as you use the waist strap you're probably safe.

As an added bonus, the side effect fits inside the main compartment pockets of the Co-Pilot so I leave it there for those cases where I don't want my full bag with me.

Yours must be a dyneema SE. It does not fit in my ballistic SE :-(

I love my SE as an EDC (a lot!), but I also take my mini with me a surprising amount of time. It is sooo frustrating that my SE is just that tiny bit too small.

It works, but you really have to pull the corners of the Dyneema SE up around the iPad if there's anything else in there (I tested it with the TB wallet and two TB extra small pouches).

I never carry the iPad mini out of its cache, so this wouldn't work for my peace of mind.

I have both the Side Effect in Ballistic Nylon Aubergine/Wasabi and Side Effects in 400d Dyneema. I can't use the Ballistic Nylon SE to carry my iPad Mini in its case, but I regularly use the 400d Dyneema Side Effect to carry both my iPad Mini and my Kindle Paperwhite. I usually only put some pouches in the front zippered pocket. It all zips up, and sits in my Little Swift. The following set of quick photos are for the 400d Black Dyneema/Wasabi SE. (Sorry for the poor image quality.)

Looks great, but its not even a close fit for my iPad mini. I have a Smart Cover on it. But I think the main problem is that my SE is ballistic nylon. The dyneema must have some 'give' to it. Great idea though!! I'm just going to have to wait until February for a black/Iberian Ristretto!

Melissa, this setup works in the Nordic/Solar Side Effect, as wel, and I don't feel as though I am stressing the bag in any way. From the last photo you can see that the case for the iPad Mini entirely encloses the device. The front flap is a magnetic smart cover built by the manufacturer (and you can also set the iPad to be displayed at different reading angles).

The level at which the iPad Mini in case sits in the Side Effect when the bag is open and, the corners are not tucked under as kkintea shows can be seen in the photos I posted to the Double Carabiner, 4 Thumbs Up! thread. (That's my Indigo Synapse 19 below the seat, in the smallest underseat area next to the window.):

There are a few pieces of artistic license in the pictures: (1) I normally use an iPhone 5, but since I was taking pictures with this device, I substituted my old iPhone 4 in the bag. (Besides, it uses holoholo's great design of a Hawaiian themed Tom Bihn logo as a screensaver):

                  (2) I usually have my Kindle Paperwhite screen facing against the iPad Mini cover, but you wouldn't have been able to recognize it in the bag in that orientation.(Earlier Kindles were carried in cases, just as earlier iPads were all carried in Caches; the PaperWhite is so light that adding a case detracts from the light-weight reading experience. It used to sit in a Cork Kindle Pouch before said pouch vanished (lost or stolen) at the airport. (3) I don't carry around a dry marker in my Side Effect! I had to borrow something to wedge in the bottom to keep the pouch open while I was taking pictures of the contents in the open pouch. It was in the zipped up pouch, but it was a casual bystander that got evicted.

HTH. It's mainly that the Ballistic Nylon version of the Side Effect enforces a more rectangular grid, and there's also heavier/stiffer seaming at the joins at the bottom of the Side Effect than with the 400d Dyneema versions.

Won't fit in my Side Effect Dyneema. 8" Dell Venue 8 won't fit either. 7" Nexus fits like a dream! I do like this for a tablet. I hope TB stretches the dimensions a scosche for the iPad Mini in the future ....

I just received a Side Effect in ballistic nylon today. It's for my dad (though I'll gladly reclaim it if he decides he doesn't like it), but my iPad mini totally fits. It's a little tight and tough to zip around the edges so I don't think I'd put the iPad in on a regular basis...plus I'm not sure how much else it would fit. I do have a back cover on my iPad, so it's a bit thicker and wider than it would be otherwise.

Any further input on this topic, a year later? I'm considering the side effect for daily carry.

A lot of people consider the iPad Mini to be too tight a fit for the Side Effect, especially if they use a case and/or smart cover. That's why I am always very careful to give the exact model of the case for the iPad Mini that I'm using, including the fact that the Side Effect that I'm using is 400d Dyneema and not Ballistic Nylon, which does not work for me to hold my iPad Mini, and to include actual pictures of the iPad stowed in the Side Effect. I actually carry more inside my Side Effec along with the iPad Minit than the contents shown above, and have been using this since I got my 400d Black Dyneema/Wasabi Side Effect well over a year ago.

I think you'd have to poll current forum members about the acceptability of this fit. Or, I think that some people have gone over to using the iPhone 6S+ or other large phone instead of an iPad Mini. Here's a picture of the iPhone 6+ in the Side Effect:

This is taken from @kkintea's longer thread, Where to stow iPhone 6 plus in TB gear.
