    question about Zephyr vs ID

I'm considering a new "personal item" purchase. I'd like something near the top of the allowable air canada size (17x13x6). I'd like it to function as my briefcase and look at least somewhat dressy. I'd like it to work with a rolling carry-on suitcase (strap or clip to it in some way).

I'm considering the ID and the Zephyr. I'm confused about their relative specs:
    ID 15.75 x 12 x 5.5 = 1275 in3: Zephyr 16.7 x 12.4 x 6.3 = 1070 in3. How is the Zephyr larger in every dimension but smaller in total volume? Can anyone explain to me?

My impressions: ID: like the larger volume. like the waist strap (may use to strap to a roller suitcase). Zephyr: like the roller handle sleeve. Like the look.

If the Zephyr had larger volume than the ID (given its larger dimensions) and had a waist strap I'd be all over it. As it is: I'm torn.

    Hi bagchick,

I have been comparing the ID and Zephyr. Studying the descriptions, the Zephyr is more laptop bag, it seems, with 1/4" padding all around and dividers. Extra materials put the Zephyr's weight up almost a pound more than the ID.

Someone with actual use will surely chime in, too, to help you decide. Cheers.

I have (and love) the ID! I went through the same debate at the time of purchase, so maybe I can help here.

I did a big review at the time, with some pics to show you what fits. This may help (it's a two parter):

I think you're assessment is right on regarding the big difference between the two. The Zephyr is a structured briefcase, and is designed to do that function well. I would classify the ID as more of messenger bag with some professional style (you could dress it up or down based on color selection). You definately wont get the structure that the Zephyr offers, but you do get some of the added flexibility.

My ID goes everywhere with me (business, travel, etc.), and does not look out of place in any situation. If I wanted something purely for the office, however, I probably would have chosen the Zephyr or Empire Builder.

      Hope this helps!

I have to agree with Magic Tiki. I have had both a Zephyr and an ID. Both are really nice bags but the ID does offer more versatility. Also because it does have a bit less structure as it does not have the padding all around, the ID is easier to get things in and out of. I have used my ID in meetings where I have needed to present a professional image (if they only knew..) and have used it as an impromptu gym bag when traveling. I eventually sold my Zephyr and continue to use the ID swapping it out with a Ristretto depending on the load I need to carry and my mood that day!>)
