combined gym / laptop bag suggestions?

looking for recommendations for a gym bag/laptop bag that i can use everyday

i want it to be able to carry
    1. a pair of shoes
    2. macbook pro (13")
    3. gym clothes
    4. toiletries
    5. and maybe a magazine / papers

i have an aeronaut (too big) and a ristretto (clearly too small)

i was thinking about the smart alec but am worried that it may be too small and really don't want to carry my shoes in the straps as i need to take this to work.

    any thoughts? checkpoint flyer?

If you can't find a Tom Bihn bag that works for you, take a look at Timbuk2's "The Arnold". I wear tested this bag and it might meet your needs. It will easily hold what you listed.

thanks, rabergnc! -- I appreciate it; I'm desperately trying not to buy one from them but they seem to be the only one on the market.

I would stick with your Aeronaught. The Timbuk2's "The Arnold" is not that much smaller.
Plus, for shoes and clothes, you can use packing cubes.
Been there. Done that. Can't remember.

          hi jimmyjim,

i think you can carry what you describe inside of the smart alec backpack. another (larger) choice would be the brain bag.

let me see if i can shoot a quick video with how these items might fit in your smart alec...

wow, maverick -- you're definitely more tech savvy than i -- that would be awesome. i'm sure other people may have wondered the same thing.

            cheers,

              JimmyJim,

I often use my Brain Bag just as you describe here. With two equally-sized compartments, it's ideal to keep the work-stuff in one compartment and the gym-stuff in the other (or a change of clothes for class, which is what I usually do). The multiple cinch straps also make it very easy to lock down and manage the load.

I especially like this arrangement because you can keep your papers, computer, etc. protected from harm (getting wrinkled, wet, or stinky) from sharing space with the other stuff in the same compartment!

Here's a set of pics I took when I first got the BB that shows what it holds... but Maverick must also make a video! They are so very cool and informative!!!

              Hope that helps!

I would think the Smart Alec would be big enough, but I think the Brain Bag is a much better suggestion. I'm doing my first "field test" of the SA and it's great but the ability to separate laptop from clothes with the BB would be huge (for me). You don't seem to mind the idea of putting it all in one compartment so maybe that's not a big deal for you.
