  • clip-in Cache?

I'm probably going to become an iPad groupie when it's released - I think at last this is the mobile computer I've been looking for. I'm also going to become a Tom Bihn groupie pretty much at the same time - the Smart Alec seems to be the daypack I've been looking for. I do a fair bit of international and domestic travel. My dearly beloved canvas Wilderness Equipment daypack has accompanied me on every trip for about 20 years, but it doesn't handle computers very well - it's just got one big cavern. It will be retired with sorrow.

Question: will the iPad Cache clip into the Smart Alec the same way as the Brain Cell? The clip-in feature seems to me to be a standout feature of the Brain Cell, because it helps balance the weight and keep the laptop from digging into your back. Without clips, I can see the iPad Cache digging in to my back in an empty pack as annoyingly as a book does now in my current pack.

If the Cache doesn't have a clip option now, will it? Or will there be an iPad Brain Cell?

Hey there: There is no clip on the cache; and I think, in an earlier thread, it was explained that the reason for it was both that the material did not lend itself to it; and there was no way to attach it without hurting the computer inside. I wish there was a way to do the clips--I find the brain cell a bit of an overkill for most of my purposes; and it does take up a lot more space than a cache.

    Thoughts--Darcy or Tom?

what if we had an option to have a sleeve sewed into the back side of the smart alec (or other bags) similar to the one in the ristretto?

this would mean forgoing annex clips, meaning that it would not be possible to attach a brain cell, the forthcoming camera insert of future accessories that make use of the annex clips. when ordering the smart alec, you would select such a sleeve or annex clips, not both.

the customer could select the size sleeve appropriate for the size laptop (just like they would select a brain cell or cache of a particular size).

      what do you think?

      thanks!

I, for one, love that idea!! To me, a "dedicated", built-in laptop section is a boon. I can always stick other things (like papers) in there if I need the room, but having a permanent part of the bag for my nearly always-by-my-side laptop would be a much preferred option to a bulky, non-permanent brain cell.

Could some sort of clip be added to the seam of the Cache?

They could be just like the Clips in the Pouches or the Gatekeepers? A simple webbing inside Laptop/Netbook and Tablets compatible bags would enable the Cache to be secured the way the Waist Straps are secured on the bags.
