  • question about the Ego

I've had my Ego bag for a week now and really like this bag, but, I have a question about it.

The bag description says that the exterior is made of ballistic nylon, but mine has a cordura back with the outside pocket made of the ballistic nylon. Is this how they are all made or is mine a mistake? And if they are all made this way, why? It would be a nicer bag if it was all ballistic nylon.

I'm going to do a full review with pictures later this week. I love the design and size of the bag but just wondered why there is the mixture of fabrics.

Doesn't anybody have an answer for me?

I do not own an Ego so "caveat emptor", but I have many Tom Bihn bags.

In my experience, it is almost impossible to discern between ballistic and cordura fabric, my only clue is the color of the bag.

As far as black is concerned, this is the hardest color to tell apart between cordura and ballistic.

By reading the description, I believe that only the interior of the bag is cordura, what color is yours Black/Black/Steel or Black/Black/Cayenne?

Mine is black/black/cayenne. I can definitely see and feel the difference between the two fabrics. The back of my Ego is made from cordura and then the portion of the back that creates the pocket on the back is ballistic nylon. I am just curious if they are all made this way.

I have an Ego in Crimson / Black / Steel. Mine has the back made of Cordura as well. I don't like that, as it picks up fuzz and lint really badly compared to the ballistic which makes the pocket.

Edit: took a picture to show the difference. Despite what backpack says, it's very easy to tell the difference between black ballistic and black cordura, both in feel and appearance.

SethKinast, that is exactly what mine Ego looks like. At least I know that they are probably all produced this way. Thanks.

I wonder if there is a reason for not using ballistic nylon?

The picture was really informative SethKinast, I can really see the difference in hues and textures within the same bag.

That back panel is in Cordura as opposed to ballistic nylon to save weight, basically. Your concerns are noted!
Have a question? @Darcy (to make sure I see it)

Darcy, thank you for letting us know why there is a difference in material. I'm not sure that it would make that big a difference in weight, but it is nice to know why. It really is a very well designed bag and I am enjoying it.
