Aeronaut colors questions

I noticed after visiting the Tom Bihn Aeronaut page today that the selection of available colors (both interior and exterior) appears to be changing.

I see that there is only one offering of Aeronaut with a Solar dyneema interior, that of Steel exterior and Solar interior. Does this mean that Solar Dyneema is on its way out? If it is, that's a shame.

I also noted that there are no longer any Indigo exterior offerings of the Aeronaut. Is this permanent, or will Indigo make a comeback someday?

While I would love to see a Kelly Green exterior / Solar Interior Aeronaut, my next most likely choice would be Indigo / Solar. If all goes well, I will probably be purchasing some new luggage some time between May and August depending on budget and travel agenda to be decided.

Solar Dyneema is here to stay -- at least for a while! Both Crimson and Indigo 1050d ballistic nylon are retiring to make way for new colors which will debut in the coming months.

If you're looking for suggestions, I'd like to see some kind of blue or purple exterior for the Aeronaut, but really REALLY like to see some nice Green. I'm talking about a green that would stand out, but not look ridiculously loud. Kind of like the "steel" or green.

Yay! I'm not the only one who thinks green and Solar would be a fantastic combination!

In Cordura, Kelly is gone, alas, replaced by Conifer. I'm hoping for something nice in Ballistic - Pine used to be a Ballistic colour. A Kelly Green in Ballistic would be fantastic, but it just isn't popular with enough people, sadly.

I was hoping for green as well, although Conifer is a little too close to Olive. I would buy a Kelly Aeronaut (or Tri-Star) in a heartbeat. Same deal with Cayenne or Cocoa!

To her credit, Darcy did post separate announcements that indigo and crimson 1050d ballistic nylon were being discontinued. These were on the 'Get them before they're gone' thread. However, if you weren't checking that thread daily, there was a really good chance you'd have missed out. I was fortunate to be having a slow day when she announced that indigo was being phased out. I spotted it a couple of hours later, and placed an order for an indigo Aeronaut immediately. The next day that colour option was no longer listed on the Aeronaut page.

There are now so many comments in that thread that it's become less useful, IMO. Either a new thread or a post on the blog would have been more visible to folks who, like me, had been sitting on the fence about a purchase for some time.

The rule of thumb about Tom Bihn Inc color pairing is to add the bags in the color you really love in your Wish List immediately.

Then it is time to start budgeting for the bag right away.

Tom Bihn Inc ballistic colors are custom made for the company.

The company can always count on selling Black and Steel to the business market as well as the East Coast and European customers who use Black and Steel as a fashion staple.


Color is much much trickier, I am a big fan of bold, colors in the blue/cool spectrum. Plum, Utraviolet, and discontinued Sapphire, Punch, Storm, Pink and Grape.

Others like muted colors in the yellow/warm spectrum which I am not really attracted to.

And there are also the personal quirks, I love Indigo and Solar but I don't like Solar as a bag lining.
I am only one customer, Tom Bihn Inc need to gauge its market, us, very accurately in order to get every single bag and accessory sold out.


Sometimes I get my order timing right, I was able to get my dream bags in Sapphire, Punch, Storm and Pink because of careful budgeting and planning of my orders.

I missed the boat on a gorgeous Grape Brain Bag, it was my first order and I though Steel would look more conservative, silly me, the Brain Bag is a backpack which never looks conservative.


Right now, I really really really love Utraviolet and I fancy Conifer.


I really hope that my budget will allow for the acquisition of many items in both colors before they sell out.


Tom Bihn Inc decision to share the status of its almost out of stock inventory, with its forum customers, is unheard of in the retail world.

Well, it is a Sticky thread, so it remains at the top of the threads among other Stickys. An option would be to use the subscribe feature to the 'Get Them Before They're Gone' thread.

That too, is true. Perhaps future announcements be made and immediately closed. Seems that might help avoid the news getting lost among discussion.

Does anyone know what the new aeronaut colors will be and when they will be available? I see that for other bags some of the new colors are Iberian and Conifer and they look nice! I'm asking because I will be purchasing two aeronauts as gifts and need them before June. If the colors are coming before then I guess I'll hold out. If not, then I'll just buy what is available.

We hope at least one of the new 1050d ballistic nylon colors will be available in the Aeronaut before June, but no guarantees at this point. We can't yet reveal what that new colors will be; because they are custom colors that have never been produced before, the fabric is still being dyed and manufactured. We need to ensure it meets our expectations before we approve it.
