  • Crowd sourcing my colour selection

I'm having a dreadful time choosing between black/wasabi and steel/wasabi for my soon to be ordered Ristretto for iPad. It will essentially replace my black MCB so I know that I am happy with black, but am also curious to try steel.

I know it's a personal choice, but any votes for either of those colours?

(PS, I'm in Australia, so I can't really order both & return one)

Steel/Wasabi. If the Steel's still anything like the Steel on my Small Cafe Bag, the two colors will go together beautifully - I actually held up my Steel/Crimson SCB and the Wasabi lining on my Imago together to see how it'd look. I have a Ristretto in Black/Wasabi and I really think you'll be happy you experimented with the Steel/Wasabi.

Do you have any Pouch in either color?

        Jonathan,

I'm inserting pictures of the Ristretto (in different sizes from the current product pages) showing the two color combinations you mentioned. Color preferences are very individual, but I'd agree with Just here after looking at the pictures: steel/wasabi looks very sharp. I think it's also the effect of the black trim on the Ristretto flap that makes the outside look so effective, because for the Cafe bag design I might opt for black/wasabi.

I have a large black pouch and black cafe bag. The only steel I have is the inside of my cafe bag.

That's going to be a different Steel (500 denier Cordura) than what would be on the outside of the Ristretto (1000 denier Cordura) - you likely already know that. Also note that Steel is a color that is very difficult to capture on camera! For my SCB, I actually spent a couple of days recently trying to figure out what kind of blue it was before I realized that it must have been Steel - haha!

That's what I figured. It looks like the votes are rolling in for steel, so I may well give it a shot.

There's such a thing as free will, you know. Just because we like the Steel/Wasabi combination doesn't mean you have to get this in favor of Black/Wasabi. I do think it looks pretty sharp, though. Just make sure you don't plan to get an 11" MacBook Air soon -- or else I'd advise getting the Ristretto for 11" MacBook Air instead. You can fit the 11" MBA inside the Ristretto for iPad, but it sticks up a little. If you want one bag that will work for either (or that can carry both), I'd opt of the Ristretto for 11" MacBook Air. (I have the Ristretto for iPad, and I set up someone's 11" MacBook Air, so I tried the fit.)

Thanks Moriond. I know it's my choice and I may well ignore the crowd. But this gave me an axcuse to chat about my pending purchase :-)

You also raise a very good point about the 11" Air Ristretto. My 2008 MacBook is probably due for replacement within the next year or so (unless it dies earlier) and on current form, the 11" Air might be it's successor. Another decision to make!

I think people say Steel because you already have a Black Cafe Bag.

I have to admit that the Steel Ristrettos with their contrasting pipping and removable Straps are very very sharp looking.

I have to admit that's a large part of my thinking too. I like the look of both, but already have a black bag. I also like navy, but already have a navy Synapse too.

Has anyone been using the 11" Ristretto to carry an iPad? Does it fit ok, or get a bit lost? I'd be slightly worried that it may be too short to tuck in behind the padded flap.

Jonathan, you may want to take a look at Darcy's post and the surrounding thread. (Click on the double pointing arrow to the right of her name to see the post in the original thread):

Left to right: Ristretto for iPad, Ristretto for 11" MacBook Air, Ristretto for 13" MacBook/MacBook Air

The Ristretto for iPad and Ristretto for 11" MacBook Air look to be almost the same size because they almost are.

(No 5'6" models were handy today.)
If you're not going to get an 11" MacBook Air in the near future, I'd stick with the Ristretto for iPad. (You might want to get another size laptop, after all).
