How to: Store a lot of bags in a small space

My name is Mike and I have a bag problem! Being an avid outdoors person, frequent traveller and reluctant business person I have acquired many backpacks, briefcases and duffel bags. Like many of you I am also likely one passport wallet away from being featured on an episode of "Hoarders"

Here is a little something I have rigged up to store all of the bags when I am not using them. Using some tubular webbing I had laying around from a climbing trip and some "not for climbing" carabiners that I found on sale I decided to bust out the ol' singer sewing machine. (For those that can't sew or recruit the sewing services of others you can buy pre made "daisy chains" at most outdoor stores that will do the same).

I doubled up the webbing and sewing a very scientific every pen length or so I ran the machine back and forth a few times to add strength. I believe this is called "back-tacking" the lo-fi redneck cousin of the wonderful bar-tacking that the lovely TB crew does in high stress areas.

Because any tutorial I do wouldn't be complete without you tying a knot, "girth hitch" the completed daisy chain over the closet bar.

Now hang all of your bags on the webbing, you can use both sides. All together the V.I.B.S. (Vertically Integrated Bag Storage) unit is holding: the aeronaut and assorted packing cubes, one leather briefcase, 2 daypacks, 1 mid size backpack, 1 large backpack, 2 extra-large expedition sized backpacks and 2 north face dry duffels with room for more!

What a great idea! I've resorted to storing my bag collection like Matryoshka dolls, with the largest being my Aeronaut. This has worked until now, but with a new bag (Ristretto for 13" MacBook) and accessories being delivered today (yay!!!), and a Synapse 25 coming next month, I may need more room for storage.
    Eat well, travel often.

Great idea! I keep my larger bags in one of my bed drawers, and the accessories are all in one of those storage paper/document boxes with a lid.

I use them to store things even at home.

I stole the idea from Dorayme when she used a Travel TB Bag to store things in her RV.

I have limited closet and shelf space

The Cordura Aeronaute stores winter knit, the Dyneema Aeronaute summer knit, I use to hang them but they are easier to get when folded.

It is very handy in the spring or fall when winter or summer want to hang out past the official date. I will choose from the appropriate Aeronaute depending on the temperature.

The Swifts hold all the needlework supplies, color coded to the yarn/bag color.

After getting a thorough cleaning and an extra helping of Nixwax, the Large Cafe Bags will be used for storing papers placed in Cordura Large Pouches.

I feel that not only TB bag make for very neat organizing tools, they also have the advantage of being portable, it has proved invaluable when things need to be grabbed in a hurry in case of mandatory evacuation when there are threatening flash floods.

I once tried to pack as fast as possible, getting all my things together took an hour because stress slows things down.

That way, if my things are already packed, all I have to do is grab and put in the trunk as fast as possible then get going.

The Synapses 19 and matching Small Cafe Bags are going to be kept as alternating EDC.

You could always get something like this if you want to utilize a door:

          MediCordz Door Mount

I have something similar that I got with a resistance band kit I bought years ago. It goes around the door and has about 10 loops where you can hang bags.

Question: How big are the carabiners shown in your photos?

Thanks for that Frank! I never thought of using one of those.

They are just over 2 inches end to end, I think it is worth noting that they might dent the foam padding in any poron filled handles so it would be best to hang TB bags from their loop by the backpack straps or the strap D-rings

Hmm... Looks like a Singer 239. A classic heavy duty machine.

ID:	288877 wow, nailed it! Emphasis on the heavy, I think you can count the number of plastic parts on one hand and half of them are cosmetic. It's a shame they don't make them like this anymore. I know I have done things on here that would shear the cogs off a modern plastic Singer, everything from heavy leather for motorcycle saddlebags to canvas and layers of heavy denim without making it break a sweat.

Woohoo!got it. I think the ONLY plastic parts are cosmetic. Excellent machine. If it ever needs a tune up, that is one of my hobbies.

Thanks for the offer! It is humming along pretty well still, in the last 10 years or so that it has been in my possession the only service it has needed has been a dusting, a few squirts of oil and a new bobbin case for a whopping 10 dollars, I must say sewing really helps you appreciate the transcendental level of design and craftsmanship that exists at Tom Bihn.

You know what I wish? I wish someone would make a video of ... The Making of a Tom Bihn Bag... I have no idea how the bags are put together, how they are sewn together, who actually works on them, and how long it takes to make one --- say, a Synapse 25. Alas, the process is probably a trade secret...

                      Someone please help me!
I have BAS (Bihn Acquisition Syndrome)!!

I'm pretty sure all Tom Bihn bags contain super secret highly classified government technology involved in their near blackhole like capacity and by disclosing it to us forum members it would trigger a series of events that would have us all running for our lives from the FBI like Jason Bourne!
