    Hero's Journey Side Pocket question

Could this be used as a stand alone purse like object? Could you attach straps to this and use it separately or does it really only work in conjunction with the large pack?

I meant the optional side pockets that clip on with gatekeepers, not the top pack that zips on. Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Ah sorry, totally did not get that. Well they do have the attachment points like the Modular Pockets have, and I have converted one of thouse into a PLO. Let me take a look at this.

I suppose it's possible to use the side pocket as a purse, but I don't think it would be very attractive; for one, it's got four attachment points and they're all on the back side of the pocket (vs. the sides) so you'd have these dangly bits, plus the strap wouldn't lie properly.

The side pockets do work very well inside the HsJ as little packing cubes, though.

The Side Pockets are almost the size of the Lead's Pocket on the Guide Pack, but slightly shaped so that the bottom edge tapers slightly. Size-wise, this could work, although there are no pockets or dividers inside -- just two O-rings. The Gatekeeper clips along the top and bottom edges only lie on one edge of the pocket, so it will not tend to hang straight if you use, for example, an FJN strap to secure it as aa shoulder strap. Might work as a nice add-on in front of another bag. I've only experimented attaching it to a Smart Alec.

Could anyone please check if a HsJ Side Pocket will fit in the top pocket of the Daylight Backpack, like the Side Effect does?

It would be a small small purse with two O-rings. You'd need to decide what to do with the gatekeeper clips (I'd cut them off) and than a FJN strap would fit.

As far as the comperison to the SE goes:

It's actually not too bad. you'd have to clip off the Gatekeeper clips attached to the webbing loops, the way @Ilkyway did for the Smart Alec Upper Modular Pocket, Then, just attach an FJN strap to the top webbing loops. I'll try to upload a picture. Because this is light weight, and carried close to the body anyway, it could work if you don't load this up too much.

Thanks all, passing on using this as a purse. Still waiting for my zip top tote to arrive.

If you clip off the gatekeepers it wouldn't be functional as an outer pocket any longer. If one were going to do that it would just make more sense to get a Side Effect.

You can fold the Gatekeepers under and still use the webbing loops with the FJN strap. I thought this question was more from the point of view of someone who wanted to try bag hacking. I could imagine wanting to use the Side Pockets for dedicated storage configurations outside of the HsJ. For example, the spacing of the top webbing loops matches the spacing placement of the old Annex Clip loops in horizontal bags, if one wanted to permanently hang extra sets of the side pockets in these bags.

    Just sayin'

ETA: And then, if you also wanted to carry the hacked Side Pocket on an FJN strap as a purse, you could.

Oops! The Hero's Journey Side Pockets are indeed temporarily sold out, but they haven't been discontinued. We've corrected the Side Pocket's page to say:
We're making this bag in our Seattle factory and expect it to be available for order within the next 2 - 12 weeks.

In other news, The Hero's Journey is now sold out in Black Halcyon/Northwest Sky.
Current Carry: The Hero's Journey, Skookum Dog Citizen Canine, Founder's Briefcase, Synapse 19 (day hikes), Guide's Pack (longer day hikes), Yeoman Duffel (winter/emergency stuff for the car), Aeronaut 30 (travel), Night Flight Travel Duffel (camera bag), Moveable Feast + Shop Bags (food)
