Medieval travel tips

I just came across this 2015 article on medieval travel tips. One of the quoted advice-givers recommends two-bagging it, with "Two bags, one very full of patience, the other containing two hundred Venetian ducats, or at least one hundred and fifty." There are a lot of people these days who recommend packing lightly by planning to buy whatever you need, which is probably equivalent to the advice to pack two hundred ducats; but I don't see many people recommending a bag full of patience. It's probably an idea that we should bring back!

Back in the pre-Euro, cash-or-travelers-checks era, the best packing advice I heard was in three simple steps:

1. Lay out everything you are intending to pack, including cash.
2. Double the amount of cash.
3. Cut half of everything else.

Some things don’t really change, though I hadn’t heard of the bag of patience (always useful).

I really wish I used the above tips for my first overseas trip; I learned in time for my second one!

Besides patience, I also suggest a backpack full of flexibility.

Be ready for changes to your plans. They're inevitable.

So we're up to three bags now! Maybe we could get by with an Aeronaut, though, it would be a lot easier to carry than three bags. Fill the middle section with patience, and an end pocket each for the flexibility and the money? (Rearrange to suit your own needs--if you need more flexibility than patience, then switch those two.)

If I need to pack patience AND flexibility (let alone money), I'm going to need an S3000.... I'm not very good with the patience sometimes, so I'll need some extra room for spares.
Plus, if I pick up some souvenirs of Humility, Experience, and Awe, I'll need some place to tuck those in

Agreed on patience and flexibility. Through the years I've learned to give myself some allowance when preparing for trips - planning enough to include all the destinations I'm curious about and giving myself time to explore a place with abandon. Not easy at first though, but worth packing both on any holiday.
