Wherever you are, your city's symphony orchestra is scrambling to provide music for you while they are on lockdown. Many musicians are recording solo bits, or experimenting with stacking apps to play 4-8 parts by themselves. And they're streaming past televised performances.

It's tough for us musicians. We are not considered "essential," so we will likely be the last to go back to work, and when we do -- even if you seat the audience far apart from each other, you can't fit the orchestra on stage 6 feet apart, and it would make it SO hard to play together that way, anyway...

And some groups, like the Metropolitan Opera and the Portland Symphony, have simply closed their doors and fired their staff -- including all the musicians.

And here, former Seattle-ite Karissa Shivone (daughter of Seattle Symphony violinist Arthur Zadinsky) performs with her husband, Thomas Shivone, as part of the Pittsburgh Symphony's "Extraordinary Measures" music videos: https://pittsburghsymphony.org (More videos here: https://pittsburghsymphony.org/pso_h...inary-measures)

I've been experimenting with an app called Acapella, which offers shortcuts to stacking multiple tracks. It's actually really hard to get these tracks together, because there's a bit of a time lag to deal with.

(There's an even bigger time lag if you try to play "together" with friends on FaceTime or Zoom, which means that our only way to play "together" is to record our tracks separately and then stack them.)

Anyway, I'm working with some friends in different orchestras around the world to make a version of this, but this was my first try at using the app, just to see if it worked. And it does, but you can tell there are some places where I had some major difficulty, where what I heard on my headphones was later than in real time. Apparently, that was because I was using wireless headphones, which have more time lag than the wired ones, but I didn't know that then.

But anyway, it's all I have to share right now.

    I hope you enjoy! https://mixcord.co/acapella/p/5tfAZs...DZQoK4JQk0r9fQ

I’m not as sophisticated as the rest of you...I just ask Alexa to play modern folk music and put my headphones on. I can listen to this for hours while I work away. Smilie

Bill Withers' Lovely Day comes to mind. He may have passed earlier this year (not due to the virus, I don't think), but his music will live on.

well what makes me sad is that we may need to hang on to these songs for bit longer ... given the situation. Christmas song trivia quiz is the only thing that cheered me up today ! by being challenging in a good way it made me day !
