There is a good review of it here. I haven't used it, but from what I understand it could help speed up your line at customs if you are in one of the few airports that has it. I believe it lets people use their phones to avoid the wait for getting to a kiosk -- at Logan Airport it can be a one hour or more line in the evening, and unfortunately we do not have this program yet.

There's probably no harm in installing it on your phone ahead of time. Like you, I have Global Entry. I installed it anyway, in case it ever comes in handy at some airport that has a long line for Global Entry.

PS: It's for U.S. and some Canadian citizens only. And it doesn't replace your passport, just speeds up the clearance process.

My update: I officially have Global Entry! I kept logging into the website to see if I could get a quicker appointment, and sure enough, one appeared on a weekend in early July. I snapped it up immediately. It was a little bit of a crazy adventure to get to JFK (nothing to do with the Global Entry process), and I got there half an hour late. The customs agent kindly ushered me in when he realized I was running behind schedule. BUT ... his camera wasn't working so another agent had to log into his computer to take my photo and email it to the first agent. The whole process took at least 20 minutes (I didn't have the heart to time it because I was already so tired, and my Global Entry photo looks it too), but hey, I got to my end goal and I'm good for 5 years!!

I too had good luck checking in regularly to get an earlier appointment. When we first got our condition approvals, my husband and I both could only get appointments in November (we're traveling in September!). But this week by checking regularly, we both managed to get August appointments. So if you're persistent, you don't need to wait as long.

Times have changed. When I signed up for GE in 2014, I could get an interview at Dulles any day I wanted with plenty of open times. I guess that's not possible any more.

This was an outstanding tip! While I am late to the game, I just got my NEXUS pass, and I am quite grateful to have learned about this cost effective alternative in the forum here.

    Hi All,

I live in Europe but have to travel to the states a few times a year, usually through Atlanta. I tried to apply for Global Entry but the online form kept changing my birthday before I submitted. Plus, it would have been very difficult to schedule an appointment, especially since there are no locations in Europe to interview (at least not that I could find). My brother-in-law came to visit and told me about the Mobile Passport app. My wife and I used it when we had to travel to DC (again, through Atlanta) and it was a breeze! Much easier than going through the red tape of Global Entry status (and much less personal information required). A tip for using Mobile Passport: upload your itinerary and passport info while waiting in the airport. Then, when you land, turn on your phone and submit as soon as you can (you canít submit more than four hours before you go through passport control). This worked beautifully for us. By the time we got off the plane and walked to the checkpoint, we breezed right through with a scan of our phone. Highly recommend this app!

Just remember, Mobile Passport isn't guaranteed nor always working. Global Entry always guarantees preferred treatment. If the GE machines aren't working, we are escorted to a special line or expedited to the front of the line. If Mobile Passport isn't working, you wait with everyone else. And....with GE we also get TSA Pre check.

That being said, if you don't cross the U S border much then Mobile Passport is a great alternative to use if available.

I usually beat my boyfriend-- who has Global Entry-- through the line using Mobile Passport, and I've never had an issue entering via JFK. For now I've decided not to bother applying for Global Entry (my biggest hang up? Trying to remember all my addresses, jobs, and international travel over the last 10 years. I had a complicated life in the late 2000s/early 2010s.) Maybe when I have to renew Pre-Check I'll go for GE (by then I can reconstruct the needed details), but very few people seem to use Mobile Passport, so for now it's an excellent, and free, alternative.

I tried to use Mobile Passport shortly after it was introduced a few years ago and we ended up having X’s on our entry cards and had to wait in line for a couple of hours to clear immigration. When we finally got to the ICE officer, he told us that our experience was pretty common at the time because of bugs in the system. Tried again a couple of times to use it with little success after that point - either we could not find the Mobile Passport line or the app malfunctioned. We decided to get Global Entry and have not had any problems since. It sounds like the Mobile Passport system works a lot better now than early on. I will still renew global entry when it expires as I now have a conditioned negative response to Mobile Passport!

Resurrecting this thread after a little forum-diving - applied today for GE, didn't realize that the waiting time could be so long. Had originally planned on scheduling our appts while we are in San Diego in a month for vaca, but I guess if that doesn't come through in time, we'll road trip to Seattle and maybe run by the Mothership too. :-)
    A45 - Black Halcyon/NWS MB - Aubergine/NWS LCB - Original Halcyon/Wasabi! MCB - Steel dyneema/Wasabi! STT - Wasabi! TC - Viridian/Dawn TT - UV/Sitka/Monarch

TB Newbie First factory visit - 9/21/2018

Besides everyone applying for summer holidays, they probably weren't processing any applications during the shutdown... usually you wait a couple months for an appointment, though it depends on time of year and how many major airports you are near.

There is also a way to do your interview when you fly back into the US at a main international airport, if you're conditionally approved:

This is a newer option and wasn't available when I got mine but should be cool if you plan on spending the extra time when you arrive...

I did my renewal on arrival and it was easy.

However, there are cancellations with appointments. . Check the schedule every day for the days you will be in San Diego. You may get lucky.

Once you get an appointment, you can do a walk-in interview. They will NOT accept you as a walk in if you don't have an appointment on the books, though.

I put in the application for my renewal on-line right at the new year and my application is pending review...I think that with the shutdown, things have been severely backlogged and may take longer. For what it is worth, when my husband applied for renewal on-line they did not require an in person interview again so it was automatically re-approved. You may get lucky (I hope I am too). May the odds be ever in our favor!
